The LG Optimus 3D was a 2011 Android phone built around glasses-free stereoscopic 3D. Its 4.3-inch display could show depth without glasses, while two rear cameras captured separate perspectives for 3D photos and video. The international model was the P920; the closely related U.S. version was sold as the LG Thrill 4G P925.
It remains an important early 3D-phone experiment, but it is not a sensible primary phone in 2026. Obsolete Android software, uncertain 2G/3G network support, aged batteries, limited apps and weak security make it suitable mainly for collectors, demonstrations and offline retro use.

LG’s regional specifications are not identical. Camera details, weight, network bands, video-output descriptions and front-camera information can differ between a P920 and a P925, so treat the table as a guide rather than a substitute for checking a handset’s model label.
What made the Optimus 3D different?
Unlike a software “3D” filter, the phone used two physical rear lenses. Each camera recorded a slightly different viewpoint; the display then directed the left-eye and right-eye images toward the corresponding eye. LG called the software hub 3D Space, where owners could open 3D photos, videos and compatible games.

LG promoted glasses-free viewing, real-time 3D recording, YouTube 3D integration and sharing to compatible televisions or computers through HDMI or DLNA, depending on the model and setup. The U.S. P925 datasheet documents these features.
How the glasses-free display worked
The 4.3-inch, 800×480 panel used a stereoscopic parallax-barrier design. A barrier in front of the LCD sent alternating image information in different directions, allowing each eye to see a separate view.
The viewing sweet spot
Depth was convincing only when the phone and your eyes were aligned correctly. Tilting the handset, moving your head or viewing from too far to the side could create ghosting, blur or a doubled image. The effect was most noticeable in photographs and games; ordinary menus and text gained little from it.
Comfort and detail
Because the panel had to serve two eye views within 800×480 pixels, fine detail was limited. Some people could also experience eye strain or headaches. Stop using the 3D mode if it becomes uncomfortable; normal 2D operation remains available.

Cameras and 3D recording
The paired 5-megapixel rear cameras were the phone’s defining hardware feature. They captured left and right perspectives simultaneously, producing stereoscopic stills and video rather than a simulated depth effect.
3D versus 2D video
LG Austria lists 3D video recording up to 720p and 2D recording up to 1080p. These are different capture modes, not a claim that 3D footage had the same resolution as 2D footage. Alignment between the lenses, lighting and the distance between foreground and background strongly affected the result.
Sharing the results
Local playback on the phone was the simplest option. YouTube 3D, HDMI and DLNA could extend the experience to compatible services and displays, but those services, cables and receiving devices had to support the relevant format. The dual-camera system was historically unusual, but it was not comparable to modern computational photography or current phone video stabilization.
Performance, “Tri-Dual” marketing and launch software
The P920 used a 1GHz TI OMAP4430 dual-core processor and PowerVR SGX540 graphics. LG’s “Tri-Dual” or “Beyond Dual Core” language described a combination of dual-core processing and dual-channel or related memory pathways; it was marketing terminology, not a separate processor category.

The phone launched with Android 2.2 Froyo. LG’s U.S. material described an intended Android 2.3 upgrade, but did not give a firm date. Later firmware availability varied by country, carrier and model. Some listings report Android 2.3 or Android 4.0 on particular handsets, so check the software screen on the exact device rather than assuming a universal final version. Relevant historical specifications are listed by LG Brazil, LG U.S., PhoneArena and DeviceBeast.
P920 versus P925: Optimus 3D and Thrill 4G
| Point | LG Optimus 3D P920 | LG Thrill 4G P925 |
|---|---|---|
| Primary market name | International markets | United States |
| Basic design | Same generation and core glasses-free 3D concept | |
| Display and cameras | 4.3-inch stereoscopic display and dual 5-megapixel rear cameras, subject to regional documentation | |
| Network configuration | Varies by country; LG UK lists 900/1700/1900/2100 HSDPA/HSUPA bands | Carrier-specific U.S. configuration; consult the exact handset documentation |
| Firmware and preinstalled software | Can differ by country and carrier | Can differ by carrier and update history |
“4G” in the P925 name is a U.S. product label from the period, not proof of modern LTE or VoLTE support. The two model numbers should not be treated as interchangeable when buying for cellular use.
Release context and historical importance
The phone was introduced and sold internationally in 2011. An FCC approval date of March 22, 2011 and commonly reported July 2011 retail timing refer to different milestones; launch dates varied by market. PhoneArena records the regulatory and device timeline.
It was one of the earliest prominently marketed glasses-free 3D Android phones, although calling it unambiguously “the first 3D smartphone” depends on how the market and date are defined. Historical lists such as Wikipedia’s LG Optimus 3D entry and the 3D-enabled phone chronology show why the claim needs qualification.

Its importance is the breadth of the experiment: capture, display, gaming and sharing were designed as one consumer product. The short-lived 3D-phone wave did not become the standard smartphone interface, but the Optimus 3D demonstrated the concept in a pocket device.

Software and security
A surviving unit is a legacy Android device. Modern applications may not install, websites and certificates may fail, and Google or video services can behave unpredictably. It should not be used for banking, password storage, two-factor authentication or sensitive communications. Sideloading old APKs adds both compatibility and security risks.
Cellular service
The P920/P925 generation uses 2G and 3G-era GSM/UMTS hardware, with bands that differ by region. Many 3G networks have been retired, and a phone can lack the LTE or VoLTE support required for calls even when a SIM fits. Carrier approval also differs from frequency compatibility. Assume Wi‑Fi-only use unless the exact model and a current carrier confirm voice, text and data operation.
Battery and physical aging
The original 1,500mAh battery is now many years old. Expect possible rapid discharge, swelling, charging-port failure, scratched screens, dead touch areas, camera faults, corrosion, damaged microSD cards or deteriorated 3D alignment. A replacement battery may exist, but authenticity and storage condition are difficult to verify; do not install a swollen or unbranded cell.

Preserving 3D media
Locally stored photos and videos are the most dependable use. Copy personal media to a computer and retain the original files before a factory reset. A reset erases data and settings but does not modernize Android, and it can leave the phone dependent on obsolete LG or Google services.
Used-device buying checklist
Ask the seller for the exact model, original sales region, Android version, battery condition and a clear photograph of the model label. Before paying, verify:
- The phone boots completely to the home screen.
- Touch input works across the entire display.
- Both rear cameras operate independently.
- The 3D preview and 3D playback mode function without persistent ghosting.
- The handset charges and retains power without swelling.
- Wi‑Fi connects reliably.
- SIM, voice, text and data work on the intended carrier, if cellular use matters.
- The microSD slot, USB port, speakers and headphone jack function.
- The seller discloses any rooting, custom firmware, boot loops or factory-reset history.
Do not rely on a listing that merely says “powers on.” A parts phone can look inexpensive while needing a display, battery, port and proprietary accessories.
Should you buy an LG Optimus 3D in 2026?
| Goal | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Collecting unusual phones | Reasonable, if the 3D display, cameras and battery are tested |
| Demonstrating early glasses-free 3D | Good fit, preferably with local media and a return option |
| Viewing preserved 3D photos or video | Useful as an offline player after copying the files elsewhere |
| Daily calls and messaging | Avoid unless a carrier explicitly validates the exact model |
| Banking, passwords or secure communications | Avoid because the platform is obsolete and unsupported |
| Modern photography, apps or battery life | Avoid; a current phone is substantially better suited |
No reliable 2026 market price is established here. Value depends on P920 versus P925, working 3D hardware, battery health, accessories, region and collector demand. Judge the individual listing rather than paying a premium for the “4G” name or an unverified software claim.

Is the LG Optimus 3D the same phone as the LG Thrill 4G?
They are closely related versions of the same 2011 3D-phone design. The international model is generally P920; the U.S. version is P925 and was sold as LG Thrill 4G. Network bands, firmware and carrier behavior can differ.
Can the LG Optimus 3D use modern 4G networks?
Do not assume so. It is a 2G/3G-era device, and the P925’s “4G” name is period branding rather than a guarantee of LTE or VoLTE. Confirm support with the carrier for the exact model.
What Android version does it run?
It launched with Android 2.2 Froyo. Later updates varied by region, carrier and handset, so inspect the individual phone rather than assuming Android 2.3 or 4.0.
