Motorola Moto G72: Specs, Strengths and Whether It’s Worth Buying in 2026

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Motorola Moto G72 is a 2022 4G phone whose 120Hz pOLED screen, 5,000mAh battery and headphone jack still make it appealing at the right price. In 2026, its age, uncertain remaining security support, lack of 5G and the condition of any used battery matter more than its original launch price. Check the exact regional version before buying: NFC, charging specification and other details can vary.

What is the Motorola Moto G72?

The Moto G72 is a midrange Moto G-series smartphone introduced in October 2022. Motorola announced it in India and said it would roll out to selected markets in Latin America, Asia and Europe; it was not presented as a standard US-market model. The India listing documents a 6GB RAM/128GB storage configuration. Regional specifications and availability should not be assumed identical. Motorola’s launch announcement and India product page provide the market-specific details.

It is not the Moto G 2026. That is a different, newer phone: Motorola lists Android 16, a Dimensity 6300 processor and 5G for the US model, while the G72 uses a Helio G99 and 4G. The newer model trades the G72’s pOLED panel for an LCD. Motorola’s US Moto G 2026 page describes that model.

Moto G72 specifications

Feature Documented specification What to note
Launch October 2022 India-first announcement; selected international markets were also planned.
Software at launch Android 12 Current version and patch date depend on the individual unit and software channel.
Processor MediaTek Helio G99, octa-core up to 2.2GHz; Arm Mali-G57 MC2 GPU 4G platform, not 5G.
RAM and storage 6GB RAM and 128GB storage on Motorola India’s listing Do not assume every market has the same configuration.
Display 6.55-inch FHD+ pOLED, 1080 × 2460, 120Hz, 10-bit Motorola rounds this to 6.6 inches in launch material; 120Hz is a maximum, not a fixed rate.
Rear cameras 108MP main, 8MP ultrawide/depth, dedicated macro camera The main camera uses pixel binning in its standard mode.
Battery 5,000mAh, non-removable A used phone’s present capacity depends on battery wear.
Charging 33W on the India product page; 30W in Motorola’s launch announcement Check the market listing and included charger for the particular unit.
Audio and ports Stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, 3.5mm headphone jack, USB-C Hardware details are shown in Motorola’s hardware guide.
Water protection IP52 water-repellent design Limited protection, not waterproofing.
NFC Available on some country versions Motorola’s manual says availability depends on version and country.
Size and weight 7.9mm thick; 166g on the India listing Figures refer to Motorola India’s product specification.

Display: the G72’s clearest advantage

The 6.55-inch FHD+ pOLED screen combines OLED contrast and black levels with a high refresh-rate option. Motorola advertises 10-bit color and HDR10+ support. Its 120Hz figure is the maximum: the phone’s automatic mode can select a lower refresh rate depending on content, settings and app requirements. Motorola’s announcement describes those display features.

That makes the panel attractive for scrolling, reading and video, particularly if you prefer OLED to LCD. The published specifications do not establish measured brightness, color accuracy, outdoor legibility, PWM behavior or gaming response, so those qualities should not be inferred from the panel label alone. On a used device, inspect for OLED burn-in, image retention, uneven brightness, dead pixels and touch faults.

Performance: fine for everyday tasks, not a modern gaming phone

The Helio G99 is suitable for messaging, browsing, navigation, streaming, social apps and ordinary photography. It is an older midrange platform, however, and its 4G modem rules out 5G. Buyers who play demanding games or want more headroom for future apps should favor a newer device.

Motorola’s launch announcement repeated a MediaTek claim of 20% better gaming efficiency than the Snapdragon 680. That is a manufacturer-attributed comparison, not an independent benchmark, and it should not be treated as proof of gaming performance. The India configuration’s 128GB storage is another practical limit for people who keep large video or game libraries.

Camera system: 108MP is a sensor figure, not a guarantee

108MP main camera

The headline resolution needs context. Motorola says the camera can combine nine sensor pixels into one larger effective pixel, producing a 12MP image in that mode. A 108MP sensor therefore does not mean ordinary photos are always saved at 108MP or that they will outperform a newer lower-resolution camera. Check the camera app’s selected mode and output size if resolution matters. Motorola’s launch material explains the binning approach.

The available official specifications establish the hardware, not independent results for daylight detail, night photography, dynamic range, autofocus, motion handling or video quality. Those are the areas to assess in sample images or on the exact phone rather than infer from megapixels.

Ultrawide and macro cameras

The 8MP ultrawide has a listed 118-degree field of view, useful for fitting more into a landscape or interior shot. As with ultrawide cameras generally, expect a trade-off in detail compared with the main camera, especially in dim conditions. The dedicated macro camera is a secondary feature, not a strong reason by itself to choose this phone; compare its results with a crop from the main camera.

Selfies and video

The cited official product information does not establish a complete front-camera megapixel specification or a detailed video capability set. Avoid relying on a seller’s listing without matching it to the exact regional model and its official documentation.

Battery and charging

The original battery is rated at 5,000mAh. Motorola marketed endurance of a full day and beyond under its own usage assumptions, but actual runtime varies with signal, screen settings, standby time, gaming and camera use. That claim does not describe a four-year-old used battery: age and charging history can reduce its real capacity.

Charging is listed as 33W on Motorola India’s product page, while the launch announcement says 30W TurboPower. Treat this as a regional or bundle difference and verify the charger supplied with the exact phone. For a used unit, test USB-C charging, check for unusual heat or swelling, and ask about battery replacement history. A replacement or repair is poor value if its cost approaches that of a newer phone.

Software and security updates

The G72 launched with Android 12. Motorola India advertised one assured OS upgrade and three years of security updates, but that launch commitment does not prove that every regional unit is still receiving patches in 2026. Motorola says update timing and availability can vary by region and software channel. The India product page, Motorola’s software-upgrade page and security-update information are useful references; verify the actual device before purchase.

  1. Open Settings and check About phone for the Android version.
  2. In Settings, find Android version or Android security update and note the security patch date.
  3. Check Google Play system update in Settings, then run Motorola’s system update check.
  4. Compare the installed software with the support information for the phone’s country, carrier and software channel.

In 2026, do not buy on the assumption of a long support runway. If current security fixes are essential, an older device with an unverified patch date is a poor choice.

Connectivity and regional differences

4G, SIMs and carrier compatibility

The Helio G99 version is a 4G LTE phone. LTE bands, SIM arrangement, warranty and software channel may differ by market. The India listing and hardware guide identify a SIM/SD tray, but buyers should check the exact model documentation and inspect the tray rather than assume that two SIMs and a microSD card can be used simultaneously on every version.

For an imported phone, confirm LTE bands and VoLTE support with the carrier, then check the phone’s IMEI using that carrier’s compatibility tool. Do not assume a model documented on Motorola’s US support site is therefore a normal US retail or carrier-certified phone. Warranty and return rights also need confirmation with the seller.

NFC

NFC is not universal across Moto G72 versions. Motorola’s user manual says it is enabled only on some versions in certain countries. On the handset, open Settings and search for NFC; if no setting appears, check the exact model’s regional specification. Do this before buying if you need contactless payments, transit cards or NFC accessories.

Water resistance and physical checks

IP52 and Motorola’s water-repellent wording do not mean waterproof. Do not submerge the phone, use it for swimming or showering, or charge it while wet; the rating is not a guarantee against liquid damage. The India specification lists a 3.5mm jack and a 166g, 7.9mm body, while the hardware guide identifies USB-C and the in-display fingerprint reader.

Should you buy the Moto G72 in 2026?

Judge it against phones available at the same transaction price now, not against its launch price. Motorola India’s page displays ₹16,999 against a ₹21,999 MRP for the 6GB/128GB version while marking it currently out of stock. That is a page-listed price signal, not a guaranteed price or evidence that new stock is available. Check the live listing and compare actual offers before deciding.

It may suit you if

  • You can buy a well-preserved unit substantially below the cost of a newer phone.
  • You value an OLED display, headphone jack, stereo speakers and large original battery capacity more than 5G.
  • Your everyday use is browsing, messaging, streaming and light-to-moderate gaming.
  • Your local version supports the required LTE bands and any features you need, including NFC.
  • You can verify the software patch date, condition, seller warranty and return option.

Choose something newer if

  • You need 5G or a longer, clearly supported security-update horizon.
  • The G72 costs close to a current phone with a healthier battery, modern modem, warranty or stronger performance.
  • You rely on NFC but cannot confirm it on the exact unit.
  • You want demanding gaming, sustained performance or high-end video capabilities.
  • The seller cannot provide the exact model number, software information, carrier compatibility or a reasonable return policy.

Used or refurbished Moto G72 buying checklist

  1. Match the model and market. Ask for the model number, country of sale and the original listing or documentation; verify RAM/storage, LTE bands, charger wattage, SIM arrangement and warranty for that version.
  2. Confirm network and NFC. Check LTE bands and VoLTE with your carrier, use its IMEI checker, and search Settings for NFC if you need contactless features.
  3. Check software status. Inspect the Android version and security-patch date on the phone itself; do not rely only on the original update promise.
  4. Inspect the display. Show full-screen white, gray, red, green and blue images to reveal burn-in, unevenness or dead pixels, then test touch across the whole panel.
  5. Assess the battery and charging. Ask about replacement history, test USB-C charging, watch for unusual heat and reject a swollen battery.
  6. Test cameras and controls. Try autofocus and each rear camera, fingerprint reader, speakers, headphone jack, buttons and microphone.
  7. Look for liquid or impact damage. Inspect ports, seams and screen edges; IP52 is not a reason to accept water exposure.
  8. Protect the purchase. Get a written return window and warranty terms, and weigh repair costs against the price of a newer phone.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
