What the Nova 3i is—and what it is not
Huawei introduced the nova 3i in 2018 as a mid-range member of its nova series. The launch emphasized the Kirin 710 chipset, AI-assisted cameras, and GPU Turbo software optimization. It was among the first Huawei phones to use the Kirin 710, according to the company’s Hong Kong launch announcement.
In some regions, the phone is closely associated with the Huawei P Smart+. That association does not make every P Smart+ interchangeable with every nova 3i: model numbers, LTE bands, memory configurations, and firmware can differ. Do not confuse it with the Nova 3, Nova 3e, Nova 4, Nova 7i, or P Smart 2019.

Design and display
The 6.3-inch, 2340 × 1080 screen was a generous, sharp panel for a 2018 mid-range phone. It is an LCD, not OLED, and has a notch at the top. Compared with newer OLED phones, expect less dramatic contrast and blacks. The reflective, glass-like back and color options such as Iris Purple and Black varied by market; the fingerprint reader is on the rear. The micro-USB port is a practical drawback today: it requires an older cable standard than USB-C and can make replacement accessories less convenient. Inspect the port for looseness or intermittent charging before buying.
Performance in 2026
The Kirin 710 was a respectable 2018 mid-range processor. Huawei’s archived specification lists four Cortex-A73 cores up to 2.2GHz and four Cortex-A53 cores up to 1.7GHz. For basic calls, messaging, browsing, video playback, and lightweight apps, a healthy unit may remain usable. It is not a current mid-range performance platform, and current games or apps may demand newer graphics hardware or Android APIs.
The experience also depends on whether a particular device has 4GB or 6GB of RAM, how much storage remains free, and the battery’s condition. Nearly full storage can make an older phone feel sluggish; a worn battery can contribute to shutdowns or performance limits. GPU Turbo was a software optimization, not a substitute for a newer GPU. TechRadar’s launch-era comparison with the Snapdragon 636 is historical context, not a meaningful 2026 benchmark.

Camera system and image quality
The Nova 3i has a 16MP rear main camera paired with a 2MP depth sensor, plus a 24MP front camera paired with a 2MP depth sensor. Huawei’s product overview identifies the four-camera arrangement. The extra 2MP sensors assist portrait depth effects; they are not separate ultrawide or telephoto lenses.
In good daylight, images can be serviceable for a phone of its era. Expect weaker low-light results than from modern phones, and portrait cutouts may misread hair, glasses, or complicated backgrounds. The camera system also lacks the computational processing found in newer Pixel, iPhone, and Galaxy generations. Do not buy it expecting modern video features or stabilization; capabilities can vary by regional model.
Battery life and charging
The original battery is rated at 3,340mAh, and the archived specification lists 5V/2A charging, equivalent to 10W. Those figures describe the phone when new, not the condition of a used unit. A battery from a phone released in 2018 may have lost substantial capacity.
Watch for rapid percentage drops, unexpected shutdowns, unusual heat, or charging that repeatedly disconnects. Test the phone while plugged in and during sustained use. A replacement may help, but parts availability and repair quality depend on location; compare the repair cost with the cost of a newer phone. Huawei regional documents listing the model in battery-service campaigns do not establish that a promotion is still active or available in your country: Romania campaign terms.

Software, updates, and Google apps
The Nova 3i launched with Android 8.1 Oreo and EMUI 8.2. Huawei documented an EMUI 9.1 upgrade path for the model in selected markets, including its Singapore upgrade plan and Sri Lanka upgrade plan. Firmware history varies by region and model number; the available evidence does not establish a universal Android 10 or EMUI 10 rollout. Huawei support pages also show regional differences in discontinued or end-of-support notices, including China and Japan.
Many Nova 3i units originally sold before Huawei’s later post-2019 devices came with Google Mobile Services. That is not a guarantee for every second-hand phone: an import, firmware change, or reflash can affect what is installed and how it works. Huawei notes that some apps require Google Mobile Services and may not work with Huawei Mobile Services in its HMS compatibility guidance. A working Play Store alone also does not guarantee that every banking, work, navigation, streaming, or notification feature will work.
- Open Settings → System → Software update and record the installed EMUI version and build number.
- Open Settings → About phone and record the model number and region details.
- Open Google Play, confirm the account can sign in, and try downloading an app.
- Test the apps you rely on, including banking, Gmail, Maps, Android Auto, and any work apps; check notifications as well as launch.
- Do not assume that unofficial firmware will restore Google certification, banking access, DRM, or Widevine support.
For update or repair pathways, Huawei’s Nova 3i support page provides support resources, but it does not establish that current firmware updates remain available for every region. If an update route fails, confirm the exact model and region before using a package; never install firmware intended for another variant. Back up data and recovery information before any reset or firmware work.

The Nova 3i is a 4G LTE phone, not a 5G device. Whether it can make calls and use data depends on the exact regional model’s bands and the carrier’s current network and VoLTE requirements. Check the full model number against the carrier before purchase, particularly for an imported unit or use in the United States; compatibility should not be assumed from the Nova 3i name alone.

Some configurations use a hybrid tray, where the second slot accepts either another SIM or a microSD card rather than both. Check the tray and test the SIM and card slots before relying on either configuration.
Buying a used Nova 3i: inspection checklist
Verify the individual phone rather than relying on a marketplace title or stock photo. Huawei’s commonly listed 128GB storage and the 4GB/6GB RAM variants are not universal guarantees for every regional listing.
- Confirm model number, RAM, storage, regional firmware, and LTE bands.
- Check that Google Play signs in and downloads an app, then test the specific services you need.
- Test both SIM functions, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, fingerprint reader, cameras, microphone, speaker, vibration, and charging.
- Inspect the display for cracks, dead pixels, ghost touches, and other damage.
- Play video or browse continuously for 20–30 minutes and watch for abnormal drain, heat, or shutdowns.
- Test the microSD slot and card read/write behavior if expansion matters.
- Confirm the seller has removed Huawei and Google accounts; ensure the phone is not locked to another person’s credentials after reset.
- Ask about return terms and check that the device is not reported lost or blocked by the relevant carrier.
Prices vary by country and condition. A 2018 India launch report listed ₹20,990, a historical figure rather than a guide to value today (FoneArena launch coverage). Gadgets 360 showed ₹17,990 in a July 2026 catalog listing, but that does not confirm active, broad retail stock or a U.S. price (listing). Judge a used unit by its condition, battery, variant, network support, software state, and return policy rather than its launch price or a catalog figure.
Who should still consider it?
A Nova 3i may suit someone who wants a very low-cost backup for basic calls, messages, music, browsing, or offline media, or a secondary device for which the required apps and network have already been verified. It may also appeal to someone seeking an older Huawei phone with its original Google-certified firmware, provided the specific device is intact and its services still work.
Choose a newer phone instead if you need ongoing security updates, dependable banking or work apps, 5G, modern gaming, long-term support, USB-C, or predictable U.S. carrier compatibility. A newer budget Android offers a more current software and connectivity baseline; a newer used Pixel or Galaxy may better meet app and support needs, while a later Huawei model still requires a Google-services check. A P Smart+ should be compared only after checking its exact model, bands, memory, and software.
