UBports’ Ubuntu Touch 20.04 OTA-9, released on June 3, 2025, lists several Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco phones among its supported devices. It does not mean that every Xiaomi handset can run Ubuntu Touch, nor that each listed variant has identical hardware support. The relevant model, codename, region and port documentation must be checked before installation.
This is also not the same release as the original OTA-9 from May 2019. The 2025 release is a Focal-based maintenance update with device-port updates, Waydroid 1.5.1, revised VoLTE support, new emoji fonts, bug fixes and security updates.
Which Xiaomi phones are supported?
In the official Ubuntu Touch 20.04 OTA-9 announcement, UBports lists these Xiaomi-family devices:

These names describe specific community-supported Ubuntu Touch ports, not blanket approval for all Xiaomi, Redmi or Poco phones. Retail names can cover different chipsets, regional editions and internal codenames. Confirm the exact hardware on the UBports device portal before downloading an image or unlocking a bootloader.

What “support” means in practice
For these phones, support generally means that an Ubuntu Touch image exists and the device is included in the stable OTA rollout. It does not promise the same feature completeness as the phone’s factory Android software. Port maturity can differ between models and variants.
Check the exact device identity
- Match the commercial model, regional edition and device codename.
- Confirm that the device appears on the current UBports portal, not merely in an old forum post.
- Read the port’s known issues for cellular service, camera, fingerprint hardware, NFC, Bluetooth, audio and GPS.
Verify your carrier requirements
Calls, SMS, mobile data and VoLTE depend on both the port and the carrier. OTA-9 improved VoLTE support for more carriers, but UBports specifically tested the change on only some Volla devices and warned that behavior on other ports may be experimental. Treat VoLTE as something to verify with your SIM and network, not as a universal fix for every Xiaomi model.

VoLTE improvements
The release updates VoLTE handling so it can work out of the box with more carriers. The limited testing qualification matters: a listed Xiaomi phone may still require port-specific testing, carrier configuration or troubleshooting.

Waydroid 1.5.1
OTA-9 updates Waydroid to version 1.5.1 and adds initial support for forthcoming official Android 13 images. This does not turn Ubuntu Touch into Android 13 and does not guarantee that every Android application will run. Apps requiring Google Play Services, proprietary DRM, specialized hardware or tightly controlled banking security can still fail.
Noto Color Emoji
Ubuntu Touch replaces Emoji One with Noto Color Emoji, improving rendering for some newer emoji characters. It is not a claim of complete support for every current Unicode emoji.
Maintenance and security work
UBports describes OTA-9 as a maintenance release containing general bug fixes and security updates from Ubuntu and UBports while the project continued work on its Ubuntu base upgrade. It is not a wholesale redesign of the mobile operating system.

- Open System Settings.
- Select Updates.
- Let the OTA-9 package download.
- Install it and reboot when prompted.
UBports used a staged rollout, so all devices did not receive the update simultaneously. If it is not visible, verify the channel and device port, reboot, and check System Settings → Updates again.
Advanced users with an existing Ubuntu Touch installation and ADB access could prompt an update with:

Installing Ubuntu Touch on a Xiaomi phone
New users should start with the UBports device portal and follow the instructions for the exact model. Do not flash a generic Xiaomi image: chipset, partition layout, bootloader state and regional hardware can differ substantially.

Before you begin
- Back up photos, messages, contacts, authentication codes and other personal data.
- Confirm that you can recover Google, Xiaomi, banking and password-manager accounts.
- Record the exact model, codename and current software version.
- Check bootloader requirements and whether unlocking is possible for your device.
- Assume installation may wipe the phone unless the device-specific instructions explicitly say otherwise.
- Keep another phone available for two-factor authentication, recovery and emergency calls.

Core phone functions
Basic calling, messaging and mobile data depend on the particular port and carrier. VoLTE may be experimental. Camera quality, video recording, hardware decoding, fingerprint readers, NFC, Bluetooth and audio can also differ from Android behavior.
Android applications
Waydroid can provide access to some Android software, but it is an additional compatibility layer rather than a complete Android replacement. Google services, DRM streaming, games, banking applications and apps that require proprietary device APIs may not work.
Recovery expectations
Installing a non-stock operating system requires comfort with backups, bootloader tools and recovery procedures. A failed installation can result from a wrong codename, incompatible bootloader state, incorrect image, USB or driver problems, or a defective cable. Stop and return to the official device-specific instructions instead of improvising partition or fastboot commands.

When the update or installation fails
OTA-9 does not appear
- Confirm that the phone is on the Ubuntu Touch 20.04 stable channel.
- Check that the exact variant is supported.
- Allow for the staged rollout to reach the device.
- Check the device page for channel or image-specific requirements.
The phone boots but hardware is missing
No data connection, broken calls or SMS, absent VoLTE, camera faults, or missing fingerprint, NFC, Bluetooth or audio functions usually indicate a port- or hardware-specific limitation. Consult that device’s documentation and issue reports rather than assuming the OTA package itself is defective.
Waydroid applications fail
Failures can result from an incompatible Android image, missing Google services, DRM requirements, resource limits or app incompatibility. Installing Waydroid does not guarantee Android-app equivalence.
2019 OTA-9 versus 2025 OTA-9
The name “OTA-9” refers to two separate Ubuntu Touch releases. The May 2019 release focused on stability, refreshed Suru artwork, browser and messaging improvements, and Nexus 5 camera fixes; its announcement does not contain the Xiaomi list. The Xiaomi support information belongs to Ubuntu Touch 20.04 OTA-9 Focal, published June 3, 2025.

Who should consider Ubuntu Touch on a Xiaomi phone?
Ubuntu Touch is a reasonable experiment for Linux enthusiasts and users who value control over a community-maintained mobile operating system. It is a poor fit if you require guaranteed Android application compatibility, proprietary banking apps, DRM-dependent streaming, or carrier features that have not been tested on your exact device and network.
