To keep an offline copy of Telegram messages on a PC, use the official Telegram Desktop app’s export feature. Cloud Chats otherwise sync from Telegram when you sign in; that synchronization is not a separate local backup, and Secret Chats cannot be recovered this way because they are tied to their original devices.
Telegram sync and a local export are different
Telegram Cloud stores ordinary Cloud Chats so they can appear on your other signed-in devices. If you need access on a new PC, install Telegram and sign in to the same account; Cloud Chats should synchronize. For an independent copy you can keep and read offline, export the data from Telegram Desktop. Telegram describes its cloud storage and synchronization in its FAQ and Privacy Policy.
An export is an archive, not a conventional Telegram backup file. Telegram’s documented export workflow does not establish a general one-click method for importing that archive back into a Telegram account.
What you need before exporting
- The official Telegram Desktop application for Windows, macOS, or Linux. Download it from Telegram’s desktop download page; Telegram Web is not the documented export app.
- Access to the Telegram account you intend to archive. If Desktop has more than one account signed in, check which account is active.
- A destination with enough free disk space, especially if you plan to include videos and other media. You choose the destination during export; there is no single default path that applies to every PC.
- A plan for protecting the files. HTML and JSON exports are readable data, so anyone who can access the folder may be able to read its contents.
Export all Telegram chats on a PC
- Install and open Telegram Desktop, then sign in to the correct account.
- Open Settings > Advanced > Export Telegram Data.
- Select the chat and account-data categories you want. Available choices can include personal chats, bot chats, private and public groups, channels, photos, videos, voice and video messages, files, stickers, GIFs, and other account data.
- Choose whether to include the relevant media and files. If you only need text, you can leave media categories out; if attachments matter, make sure their categories are selected.
- Choose HTML for a browser-readable archive or JSON for data processing, then choose a destination folder.
- Start the export and let it finish. Large exports can take time and use substantial disk space; keep the computer available and avoid interrupting the app.
- Open the resulting folder and check that the expected files are present. For HTML, open the exported page in a browser and inspect the conversations and attachments.
Telegram documents this all-data route, including cloud chats and media export, in its export guidance. Exact labels and menu placement can vary slightly by desktop platform or app version.

Export just one conversation
- Open the conversation in Telegram Desktop.
- Open the chat’s three-dot menu and choose Export chat history.
- Choose whether to include media and select the content types you need.
- Pick HTML or JSON, choose a destination, and start the export.
- When it finishes, open the output folder and check the messages and any attached files you expected to keep.
This is useful when you need a focused record rather than an account-wide archive. The wording or location of the menu may vary slightly by operating system or app version. Telegram documents the individual-chat option in its export guidance.
Choose HTML or JSON

Telegram describes HTML as human-readable and JSON as machine-readable in its export guidance. Neither format should be treated as an encrypted file by default.

Verify the export before relying on it
- Open the HTML page if you chose HTML and confirm the conversation or account is the one you intended.
- Check a few older and recent messages rather than assuming a successful export includes the full date range you wanted.
- Open representative photos, videos, documents, or voice messages if you selected those categories.
- Confirm the export completed and that you opened the full output folder, not only the HTML page.
- Copy the archive to a second protected location. A single copy on the same computer does not protect against drive failure or loss.
If text is present but an attachment is missing, check whether that media type was selected and whether the complete export folder is intact. Also review any date-range settings that could exclude older content.
If Telegram will not let you export
- Check the app: use the installed official Telegram Desktop application, not Telegram Web or another client. Update Desktop if the export option is missing.
- Check the route and account: for a complete export, look under Settings > Advanced; for one conversation, check its three-dot menu. Confirm that the intended account is active.
- Account for a new-login security restriction: Telegram says an export may be delayed for up to 24 hours after a new Desktop authorization. If prompted, you can instead confirm the request from another already-authorized device and begin downloading immediately. This restriction may not affect every user. Keep your existing phone or session signed in while you approve or wait; avoid repeatedly logging out and back in. Details are in Telegram’s export guidance.
- Reduce the scope: if a full export is unwieldy, try one chat or fewer media categories. Check the destination’s free space and permissions, and leave the application open until the export completes.
Secret Chats are not included in a cloud export
Secret Chats are end-to-end encrypted between participating devices and are not stored in Telegram Cloud. They are available only on the devices where they were created; signing in on a new PC does not recreate them. Logging out can remove Secret Chats from the current device’s session. If you still need one, do not log out of its original device. Telegram explains these limits in its FAQ and Privacy Policy.

If your phone is lost, you may still be able to sign in on a PC and sync Cloud Chats, but losing the device that holds a Secret Chat can mean losing that history. A Desktop export cannot retrieve a Secret Chat created on another device.
Protect the exported archive
Telegram exports can contain private messages, names, contact details, photos, videos, documents, voice messages, and other account data. Treat the folder as sensitive:

- Save it somewhere private rather than in a shared Downloads folder or on a shared work computer.
- Use full-disk encryption or place the export in a password-protected encrypted archive before moving or uploading it.
- Keep a second copy in a separate, protected location, not a publicly accessible or shared cloud folder.
- Remove temporary copies when you no longer need them. Remember that deletion from one folder does not remove copies elsewhere.
Telegram’s FAQ warns that someone with access to an unlocked computer may be able to access Telegram data.

Export what matters before deleting messages or an account. An export is not a recovery tool for messages already deleted from Telegram’s cloud or content that has self-destructed. It also does not turn into a native Telegram restore point: use it to read, preserve, or process an archive, not as a guaranteed way to repopulate conversations in Telegram.
