It was an Android phone built to resemble an iPhone 17 Pro Max, with copied Apple branding and an iOS-style interface. The distinction matters: the reported hardware and software point to a counterfeit clone, not an Apple prototype or a normal software modification.
How the teardown exposed the clone
Phone Repair Guru reported that the device arrived in convincing Apple-style packaging and looked plausible at a glance. Its color, weight, camera layout, side rails and glass back reportedly resembled the genuine phone. Closer inspection and diagnostic checks told a different story: the screen had thick bezels and a pronounced chin, the bottom’s pentalobe shapes were markings rather than screws, and device information identified Android hardware. Phone Repair Guru’s teardown is the source for the observations below.

These are findings about one reviewed device, not a specification sheet for every imitation. The battery label in particular does not establish the cell’s actual capacity, safety certification or performance.
Why it can look like iOS without being iOS
Android launchers and custom firmware can imitate familiar visual details: an Apple logo at startup, an iPhone-like setup flow, icons, a control center, a notification shade and an App Store-style storefront. The teardown reported those kinds of imitations, while diagnostic tools identified Android 10 beneath the skin. A copied product name or Apple-style screen is not proof of Apple hardware.

The reviewer also reported that the apparent App Store was fake and that Android behavior surfaced beneath the imitation interface. Performance and camera observations—including failed Geekbench 6 and 3DMark runs, poor game performance, dull colors and hunting autofocus—came from that one unit; they should not be generalized to every clone.
Is it a prototype or a genuine iPhone that runs Android?
The reported MediaTek processor and Android 10 installation are consistent with a counterfeit phone designed around Android, not evidence that Apple built an iPhone capable of running Android. A prototype is development hardware; a dummy model is a nonfunctional display object; a working imitation built with non-Apple hardware is a counterfeit clone. The teardown supports the last description for its reviewed unit.
Keep separate videos and devices separate. AppleInsider reported that its staff had seen working Android clones styled like the iPhone 17 Pro Max, but said a circulating factory-video claim could not be independently confirmed. That report does not establish that the video showed the teardown phone, the same supplier, or mass production. AppleInsider’s report distinguishes those claims.

How to check a suspicious phone before paying
Use several independent checks rather than trusting the box, logo or one online lookup. If a seller will not let you power on and inspect the phone, treat that refusal as a reason not to proceed.
- Start it from powered off. Complete enough setup to inspect the operating system. Look for Android-style settings, unfamiliar menus, inconsistent interface behavior or an Android version page.
- Inspect device information. Check whether the phone identifies Android, a MediaTek processor or specifications inconsistent with the claimed model. On a suspicious Android handset, diagnostic apps such as CPU-Z or AIDA64 can help reveal hardware details; neither authenticates a box or seller.
- Test the interface and services. Open settings and built-in apps, and check whether the phone behaves like a genuine Apple device. A copied Apple logo, product name or iOS-like launcher is weak evidence.
- Inspect the screen and body. Look for unusually thick bezels, a large chin, poor display quality, incorrect port or button placement, rough machining, or screw details that are only decorative.
- Test cameras and claimed features. Switch between each claimed camera, then check focus and image quality. Test charging, speakers, microphones, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC and claimed biometric authentication. One failed feature alone may have other explanations, but several inconsistencies are a strong warning.
- Compare identifiers and paperwork. Match the phone’s serial number and IMEI against the box, receipt and listing, and check whether model, storage, color and region are consistent. Treat a match as one check—not authentication.
- Assess the transaction. Prefer a traceable seller, a receipt and a return period. Buy through Apple or an established authorized retailer when authenticity is essential. A sealed box, unusually low price or polished packaging does not replace inspection.

In Phone Repair Guru’s teardown, the printed serial number and IMEI reportedly appeared valid when checked online. Counterfeiters can copy identifiers from genuine devices, so a database result may identify a real device associated with that number without proving that the phone in your hand is that device. Use the identifier alongside operating-system, hardware, physical and seller checks; do not let a successful lookup overrule contradictory evidence.

If you already bought one
Preserve evidence before returning, resetting or handing over the phone. If possible, keep it in its current state and avoid signing into accounts or installing sensitive apps.
- Save the listing, order confirmation, invoice, tracking details and seller messages.
- Photograph the packaging, seals, labels and identifiers; record the phone’s software and hardware screens.
- Contact the retailer or marketplace through its official dispute process and request a refund or replacement in writing.
- If the seller does not resolve the issue, contact your payment provider and report the suspected counterfeit through the platform and the relevant consumer-protection channel in your country.
- If you entered passwords or payment details, change affected passwords from a trusted device and monitor the accounts.
A counterfeit is not the only possible problem with a suspicious used phone. A genuine iPhone may have replacement parts or repairs; a device may also be stolen, locked or blacklisted without being counterfeit. Focus on the evidence about this handset rather than assuming why it was sold or who knew its history.
