The Xiaomi Mi 6 is a genuine 2017 flagship, not the later Mi 6X. Its compact 5.15-inch body, Snapdragon 835, stereo speakers, NFC and dual camera remain appealing to enthusiasts, but a used unit is now a legacy device. It is sensible mainly as a compact secondary phone, offline device or hobby project—not as a dependable primary phone—unless you verify its battery, firmware, IMEI and carrier compatibility.
Xiaomi Mi 6 quick verdict
| Best for | Compact-phone enthusiasts, collectors, secondary devices, offline navigation, music and custom-ROM experimentation |
|---|---|
| Main strengths | Small 5.15-inch form factor, solid glass-and-steel construction, Snapdragon 835, stereo speakers, NFC, front fingerprint reader and a real telephoto camera |
| Main weaknesses | Ageing battery, obsolete software expectations, no 5G, no microSD slot, no headphone jack and uncertain network support by region |
| Primary-phone verdict | Usually no in 2026, especially for banking, work, travel or emergency use |
Xiaomi announced the Mi 6 in April 2017 and reported availability from April 28. Launch coverage put its starting price at roughly $360, although taxes, storage and market made the actual price vary. Tech Advisor and PhoneArena covered the launch.
It followed the Mi 5 and preceded the Mi 8 in Xiaomi’s flagship line. The Mi 6X is a different, later mid-range model; parts, firmware and cases should not be assumed interchangeable. Availability also varied between China, selected Asian markets and imported channels rather than representing one uniform global model.

Design and display
The Mi 6 is unusually manageable beside modern phones. Its 5.15-inch 16:9 screen leaves more bezel above and below than current all-screen designs, but that layout keeps one-handed reach practical. The Full HD IPS LCD is sharp at this size and generally consumes less power than a high-resolution panel.
You get a curved glass back, polished stainless-steel frame and a front fingerprint reader. The glass feels premium but is slippery and vulnerable to drops; the ceramic edition is more substantial and heavier. There is no headphone jack, so wired headphones require the supplied USB-C adapter where included or a compatible replacement. USB-C, stereo speakers and NFC are useful advantages for a 2017 phone.
“Splash resistant” should not be treated as waterproofing. Any sealing may be compromised by age, impact, a replaced battery, a changed back cover or previous opening of the phone.
Compared with a modern OLED phone, the Mi 6 has older LCD contrast, no high-refresh-rate mode and a much smaller viewing area. Used panels should be checked for dead pixels, uneven brightness, touch faults and damage around the curved edges.

Performance: flagship speed then, legacy speed now
Snapdragon 835 was a high-end 10 nm platform in 2017, and pairing it with up to 6 GB of RAM helped the Mi 6 undercut more expensive flagships while feeling fast. Contemporary coverage highlighted that combination and the dual-camera system; see TechSpot and Android Authority.

In 2026, the same chip can still handle calls, messaging, music, light browsing, navigation, older games and some emulation when the battery and software are healthy. It is not equivalent to a current budget or mid-range processor. Modern games, sustained workloads, camera processing and heavy multitasking can expose heat, throttling and app-compatibility limits. The 128 GB version is preferable because storage cannot be expanded.
Camera system and present-day image quality
The rear system uses two 12 MP cameras for different jobs:
- Primary wide camera: everyday framing, with four-axis optical image stabilization and phase-detection autofocus.
- Telephoto camera: approximately 2× optical zoom for portraits and tighter compositions, rather than a digital crop.
The phone records up to 4K at 30 frames per second, along with 1080p modes and slow motion. The front camera is 8 MP. Xiaomi’s launch material emphasizes optical zoom and OIS; specifications and historical camera details are also documented at Wikipedia.
In daylight, an undamaged module can still produce usable photographs. Low-light performance, dynamic range and computational processing are far behind current phones, and the telephoto camera is particularly dependent on good light. Software, custom ROM camera implementations, scratched lens covers and failed OIS hardware can change results substantially, so megapixel counts are not a guarantee of modern flagship quality.
Battery, charging and ageing hardware
The original non-removable battery was rated at 3,350 mAh, and Xiaomi promoted all-day use when the phone was new. That claim cannot be transferred to a handset that launched in 2017. Battery condition is now more important than the printed capacity.

Before buying, look for rapid percentage drops, poor standby time, unexpected shutdowns, heat during ordinary use or charging, a screen lifting from the frame, and a USB-C port that feels loose. A swollen battery is a safety issue, not merely a short-runtime problem. Treat every used Mi 6 as a possible battery-replacement project. A replacement can restore useful runtime, but low-quality cells, inaccurate capacity labels, damaged covers and lost sealing are real risks.
Software history and update expectations
The Mi 6 launched with MIUI 8 on an Android 7-era base. Regional documentation differs between Android 7.0 and 7.1.1 descriptions, and commonly cited device histories list Android 9 with MIUI 11 as the last broadly reported official update. Exact builds and update paths vary by region. See the regional product sheet and regional device-history reference.

Custom ROM use
Enthusiasts may use the Mi 6 as a compact secondary phone, music player, offline navigation unit, emulator or development handset. Support is volatile, so verify current maintainer activity before flashing. Unlocking can require account, region or waiting-period conditions and normally wipes data. Incorrect firmware can brick the device, while camera, NFC, fingerprint, VoLTE, encryption and banking-app behavior may vary. A newer ROM does not automatically make old hardware secure.
Network compatibility: the critical check for international buyers
The Mi 6 has no 5G and was not designed as a universal United States carrier phone. LTE bands differ between regional variants. The Hong Kong sheet lists B1, B3, B5, B7, B8, B38, B39, B40 and B41, but that list applies to that market document, not every Mi 6.

Before purchase, identify the exact model and region, then check the carrier’s current compatibility database for LTE bands, VoLTE certification and IMEI eligibility. Also account for 3G shutdowns, blacklist status, emergency calling and whether imported firmware enables carrier features. Do not rely on a seller’s claim that it works with AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon or an MVNO without an actual carrier check.
Used-buying inspection checklist
Ask for a return period and test the physical phone before committing. Check:
- RAM and storage capacity, preferably 6 GB/128 GB if prices are close.
- Exact regional model, LTE bands and IMEI cleanliness.
- Bootloader state and whether firmware is official, Global, EEA, Chinese or reseller-modified.
- Google Play certification and normal Play Store operation.
- Battery behavior, swelling, charging speed and USB-C port fit.
- Display brightness, dead pixels, touch response and glass damage.
- Fingerprint reader, home-button area, speakers and microphones.
- Both rear cameras, autofocus, OIS behavior, flash, selfie camera and video recording.
- NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, mobile data and SIM registration.
- Signs of water or impact damage, replaced parts and a back cover that no longer sits flush.
“Global ROM” in a marketplace listing can mean an unofficial reseller flash rather than an original global retail phone. Chinese firmware may lack Google services, use different bands or create unlocking complications.
Who should buy one in 2026?
Existing owners
Keep it if its battery is healthy, your apps still work and your carrier supports its bands. It remains a pleasant small phone for calls, music, navigation and light tasks, but plan a replacement for security-sensitive use.
Compact-phone enthusiasts and collectors
The Mi 6 is one of the more complete small Android flagships of its era: stereo audio, NFC, front biometrics and a genuine telephoto camera in a narrow body. Condition and originality matter more than a low listing price.

Best Value
- 3.6g super lightweight: The charging case adopts a clean and sleek design. Each earbud weighs only 3.6g, reducing pressure in the ear canal and delivering lightweight comfort
Custom-ROM hobbyists
It can be an enjoyable project if you accept data wipes, uncertain hardware support and the possibility that banking, VoLTE or camera functions will not work perfectly.
Primary-phone buyers
Choose a newer device instead if you need current security updates, dependable battery life, modern carrier support, 5G, expandable storage, strong night photography or a phone for work, banking, travel or emergencies.
Alternatives by priority
| If you prioritize | More suitable category | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Current support and easy carrier activation | New budget Android phone | Usually larger and less compact |
| Better cameras, modem and security | Recent used flagship | Higher purchase cost |
| Small size with longer software support | Used iPhone SE generation | Different operating system and battery compromises |
| Android experimentation | Newer enthusiast-supported used phone | May lack the Mi 6’s particularly small 5.15-inch body |
Current model and price recommendations require checking live stock, condition and carrier support; historical launch pricing is not a useful 2026 benchmark.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Xiaomi Mi 6 the same phone as the Mi 6X?
No. The Mi 6 is a 2017 Snapdragon 835 flagship; the Mi 6X is a later, different model with different hardware and compatibility.
Does the Mi 6 support 5G or microSD cards?
No. It supports 2G, 3G and 4G LTE, and storage is fixed at 64 GB or 128 GB.
Is the Xiaomi Mi 6 waterproof?
No modern IP rating is established. Xiaomi described splash resistance, which is not a guarantee against immersion, especially on an aged or repaired handset.
The Bottom Line
The Xiaomi Mi 6 still makes sense as a small, inexpensive enthusiast or secondary phone when its battery, firmware and network compatibility check out. For a reliable primary phone in 2026, its age, uncertain updates, missing 5G, fixed storage and likely battery wear make a newer model the safer choice.
