It combines a 2.8-inch touchscreen, interchangeable physical keypads and a de-Googled Android/AOSP-derived operating system. You get calls, SMS and a curated selection of apps, but not Google Play, RCS, eSIM or unrestricted smartphone compatibility. It is best understood as a minimalist Android phone for people who want fewer distractions without giving up maps, secure messaging, email or navigation.
What Sidephone is
Sidephone sits between a traditional feature phone and a modern smartphone. Its small touch display, physical-keyboard emphasis and limited software catalogue create feature-phone friction; its Android-derived software, browser and third-party applications provide capabilities a normal call-and-text handset does not.
The manufacturer describes it as closer to a “dumbphone” than a smartphone. A more precise description is a de-Googled minimalist Android phone with interchangeable physical keypads. It can serve as a primary phone, a work line, an occasional offline phone or a gradual step away from a full smartphone.
The U.S. storefront lists the handset at $299. Keypad accessories are generally listed at $29, and silicone cases at $10; stock varies. Sidephone is sold directly rather than through carrier retail stores. See the U.S. store and the company’s product explanation.

Listed keypad choices include Classic Keypad, Compact QWERTY, Mini Controller Keypad and Sundial Keypad. The Compact QWERTY layout is intended to work with JakeType predictive entry. Sidephone’s setup documentation also describes programmable buttons and Key Mapper support. The Compact QWERTY and Numeric keypads are not backlit, according to the official documentation.
Before ordering an extra module, check availability and whether the default configuration meets your needs. Repeated swapping, connector durability and the value of owning multiple layouts are practical questions the published materials do not answer.
How app support actually works
Curated App Packs
Sidephone does not ship with the normal Android app store. Supported software is organized into themed App Packs. Packs are hidden until you scan a QR code; you then select applications and install them from the on-device App Library. The official catalogue includes:
| Need | Examples | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Input | TT9, JakeType | Predictive T9 or compact-QWERTY typing, depending on the keypad |
| Essentials | Notes, maps, calendar, recorder, LocalSend, music player | Core tools designed for a small screen |
| Privacy and productivity | Proton Mail, Proton VPN, Proton Calendar, Proton Drive, Proton Pass, Standard Notes | Useful privacy-oriented services, each with its provider’s own account and policy requirements |
| Messaging | WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram | Available through the library, but interfaces may be constrained |
| Security | Aegis, Duo, Bitwarden | Verify every authentication workflow before relying on it |
| Browser and web tools | DAVx⁵, K-9 Mail, Uber, Vivaldi, Firefox | Web browsing and services work within the limits of the 2.8-inch display |
| Utilities and media | Olauncher, Librera FD, Audile, Breezy Weather, Organic Maps, audiobook and podcast tools, Obtanium, Open Camera, Catima | Selection favors focused, offline or lightweight use |

Sideloading is possible, not guaranteed
Because Sidephone uses AOSP, the company says legitimate third-party installation is not technically blocked. That does not make it a Google-certified Android phone. Apps that require Google Play Services may fail, unsupported apps are not guaranteed, and an app that installs may still be awkward on the small display. Obtain software from legitimate developer sources and keep a fallback device for essential services.
Calls, texts and messaging
Ordinary calls and SMS are supported. RCS is not currently supported. If your number remains enrolled in RCS, some messages may not arrive; Sidephone advises unenrolling the number when that happens. iMessage reactions and effects will not reproduce perfectly on a non-Apple device. Signal, WhatsApp and Telegram can be installed from App Packs, but their feature parity and readability are not the same as on a current large-screen phone.

Carrier compatibility can decide the purchase
In the United States, official limitations say Sidephone will not work with Verizon. The phone lacks bands B13, B66 and B71, which can reduce coverage in rural areas or inside large buildings on networks that rely on them. Depending on the carrier, data speeds, VoLTE and other functions may also be limited. Sidephone has no carrier certifications and is not sold in carrier stores.
Before porting your number, verify all of the following with the exact carrier or MVNO:
- LTE and VoLTE support for this device
- Coverage at home, work and regular travel locations
- Hotspot eligibility and any device-whitelist requirement
- Physical-SIM activation for an unlocked, directly purchased phone
- Emergency calling and indoor coverage
Sidephone advertises in-house mobile plans as an option when an existing carrier cannot activate or support the handset. Plan pricing and terms should be checked on the current U.S. site.
Google-free software: benefits and trade-offs
Sidephone ships without Google apps or Google Play Services, and the company does not advertise mandatory account creation. That can reduce exposure to Google’s mainstream engagement systems and supports an intentionally smaller software environment. Proton tools, Signal, Bitwarden, Aegis and similar applications are available in the official library.
The same design removes compatibility that many Android users take for granted. Google-dependent banking, payment, health, transport, workplace and authentication apps may not work. Accessibility functions that depend on Google Play Services are also limited. De-Googling is not proof that the entire phone is private or surveillance-free: cellular metadata, cloud providers, manufacturer practices and update policies remain separate questions. The published materials do not establish a complete privacy audit, independent security audit or a guaranteed update duration.

What the 2.8-inch screen changes
The display is central to Sidephone’s distraction-reduction strategy. It also means more scrolling and zooming, smaller tap targets and less comfortable long-form browsing, email, documents and maps. Some apps may technically run while offering reduced functionality.
Maps can provide turn-by-turn navigation, but 3D flyovers and live augmented-reality views are not supported. Offline media playback works, while streaming choices are intentionally limited. Treat the App Library as a compatibility filter rather than assuming that every Android interface will be pleasant at this size.

- No IP water-resistance rating
- No fast charging
- No FM radio receiver
- Limited smartwatch support
- Android Auto is not currently supported
- No barometer, so emergency services cannot receive altitude data from the phone during a call
- Camera documentation notes shaky video, digital-zoom blur, grainy night images and backlight blooming
The product page calls battery life “all-day,” but no independent runtime measurement is established here. Treat that as the manufacturer’s wording, not a test result. Bluetooth headphones and car systems are supported.
Moving from a feature phone
- Complete Sidephone’s initial setup.
- Power off the old phone, remove its SIM and insert it into Sidephone.
- Confirm signal and place a test call.
- Export old contacts as a
.vcffile. - Transfer the file with LocalSend or another method, then open it to import contacts.
- Reveal the Input App Pack and install Key Mapper.
- Assign physical buttons to the actions you use most.
- Install TT9 or JakeType when your keypad layout benefits from predictive entry.
- Add Maps and other required apps.
Keep the old phone until calls, texts, contacts, two-factor authentication, maps and emergency use all work. If activation fails, test the SIM in another compatible phone first. If messages disappear, check RCS enrollment. If an app refuses to launch, investigate Google Play Services dependence before treating it as a hardware fault.
Who should buy Sidephone?
Good fit
- People deliberately reducing social-media, video and gaming time
- Feature-phone users who still need selected maps, email, messaging or password tools
- Buyers comfortable with a small display and physical buttons
- Users on a verified compatible carrier other than Verizon in the U.S.
- People who value a de-Googled system over maximum app breadth
- Those willing to troubleshoot a direct-to-consumer device
Poor fit
- Anyone who requires Google Play Services or Google Wallet
- Users dependent on Google-based banking, health, workplace or transport apps
- Verizon customers in the United States
- Buyers who require eSIM, 5G, water resistance, fast charging or Android Auto
- People who regularly stream video, game, use complex productivity software or need a large display
- Anyone expecting carrier-store support and mainstream Android compatibility
Before you switch: a practical checklist
- Ask frequent contacts whether they rely on RCS-only features.
- List every essential banking, medical, work, school, transport and authentication app.
- Confirm each app individually; do not infer compatibility from the fact that an APK installs.
- Check your carrier, MVNO, LTE/VoLTE support and local coverage.
- Test physical-keyboard typing and choose the appropriate input app.
- Confirm that the keypad and case you want are in stock.
- Maintain a fallback phone until real-world calls, texts and emergency use are verified.
Verdict
Sidephone is compelling as a controlled, de-Googled transition away from a smartphone. Its $299 hardware, physical keypads and curated apps can cover calls, SMS, navigation, secure messaging and selected productivity needs. It is not a universal smartphone replacement: carrier restrictions, missing Google services, unsupported RCS, a tiny display and basic durability and camera specifications are fundamental characteristics of the product, not minor footnotes.
