On most Fire TV devices, press Home, open Settings > Network, select the new Wi-Fi network, enter its password, and choose Connect. You’ll usually need the Fire TV remote. The Fire TV mobile app generally works as a remote only when your phone and Fire TV are on the same Wi-Fi network, so it may not help if the Fire TV is still connected to your old network.
Before you begin
- Turn on the Fire TV and have its remote available.
- Know the new Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password. Passwords are case-sensitive.
- For a Fire TV Stick or Cube, set your television to the HDMI input the device uses. A television with Fire TV built in does not need a separate HDMI device.
- Make sure the router is powered on. If possible, confirm that another device can connect to the new network and reach the Internet.
Changing Wi-Fi normally does not require deregistering your Amazon account or resetting the Fire TV. Menu wording can vary by model, Fire OS version, and television manufacturer, but Settings > Network is the usual starting point. Amazon’s Fire TV Wi-Fi guidance describes the same basic connection route.
Connect Fire TV to the new Wi-Fi network
- Press Home on the remote.
- Open the Settings gear and choose Network.
- Wait for nearby networks to appear. If the interface offers See All Networks or a refresh option, use it to find the full list.
- Select the exact name of your new Wi-Fi network. Take care if nearby networks have similar names.
- Enter the Wi-Fi password with the on-screen keyboard, checking uppercase and lowercase letters, then select Connect.
- Wait for the connected or network-status confirmation. Open a streaming app to verify that Internet access works.
If the device is at its initial setup screen rather than the home screen, use the network selection offered there; the Settings route is for the normal Fire TV interface.
If Fire TV keeps trying the old network
Forget the saved network and then join the new one. This is especially useful when the network name has not changed but its password has.

- Go to Settings > Network.
- Highlight the old network.
- Press the remote’s Menu button, then choose the forget-network action with Select or OK, as prompted.
- Select the new network and enter its password.
Remote layouts differ, so identify buttons by their labels or icons rather than their color or position. Amazon describes the forget-network control and connection troubleshooting.
If the new network does not appear
Try these actions in order, checking the network list again after each one:

- Press Back to refresh the list, if your interface supports that action.
- In Settings > Network, turn Wi-Fi off and back on if a Wi-Fi toggle is available.
- Temporarily move the Fire TV and router closer together.
- Restart the Fire TV: unplug its power, wait at least 10 seconds, plug it back in, and wait for the home screen to load. A longer wait of up to one minute is also used in some Amazon setup troubleshooting guidance. For a Stick, disconnecting HDMI alone does not remove power; unplug its power adapter or USB power connection.
- Restart the modem and router. Unplug both for about one minute, reconnect the modem first, and allow it to reconnect to the Internet before plugging in the router. Wait for the router connection to stabilize, then check Fire TV again.
These refresh, Wi-Fi toggle, restart, and placement steps are included in Amazon’s connectivity troubleshooting guidance. If the Fire TV is still in setup, Amazon’s Fire TV setup and Wi-Fi help also covers connection problems.
If the password is rejected
- Confirm that you selected the right SSID, particularly if the router broadcasts similar names for different bands or guest access.
- Check uppercase and lowercase letters, numerals that resemble letters, and accidental spaces.
- If the password changed but the network name stayed the same, forget the saved network before reconnecting.
- Try the same credentials on another device. If that device also cannot connect, investigate the router settings or ask your Internet provider rather than repeatedly retrying on Fire TV.
If Fire TV connects to Wi-Fi but has no Internet
A Wi-Fi connection means the Fire TV has joined the router; it does not prove that the router has a working Internet connection. Check whether another device can browse online. If several devices are offline, the issue may be the router or a service outage rather than Fire TV.

When Fire TV shows Unable to Connect, select Network Diagnostics and follow the on-screen recommendations. On compatible devices, Run Speed Test or Advanced may provide more information. You can also open Settings > Network, highlight the network, and press Play/Pause to reach network status or diagnostics where supported. Options vary by device. See Amazon’s Network Diagnostics instructions and connection-status guidance.
If diagnostics point to a network problem, restart modem and router in that order, restart Fire TV, then forget and rejoin the network if needed. Move the Fire TV closer to the router and check whether the Internet service is available.

No remote? Know the app’s limitation
Amazon says the phone or tablet and Fire TV should be on the same Wi-Fi network for app-based control and remote pairing. If Fire TV is offline or attached to the old network while your phone is on the new one, the app may not find it. The Fire TV app help explains its network requirement.
Try restoring the old network temporarily
As a workaround, configure the replacement router or a phone hotspot with the old Wi-Fi name and password. If Fire TV reconnects automatically, the phone app may then be able to control it; use the remote interface to open Settings > Network and switch to the new network. This depends on Fire TV reconnecting to the recreated network and is not guaranteed.

Other control options
- Use a compatible replacement remote. Check compatibility with your specific Stick, Cube, or Fire TV television model before buying; generations are not universally interchangeable. Amazon’s Fire TV support pages are a starting point.
- If your model supports Ethernet, a compatible adapter may provide temporary wired access so the app can control Fire TV on the home network. Ethernet support and adapter requirements depend on the model; it is not available for every Stick.
- A powered USB-OTG adapter or hub is an advanced, model-dependent fallback. Because connector, power, and compatibility requirements vary, it is not a good first option for most owners.
Hotel, dorm, apartment, or public Wi-Fi
Some managed networks require a browser-based terms page, device registration, enterprise credentials, or approval of the device’s network address. Others isolate connected devices or limit how many can join. These requirements can prevent the ordinary home-network steps from working as expected. Follow the property’s approved streaming-device procedure or contact its network support; do not try to bypass access controls.
When to consider a factory reset
A factory reset is not a normal fix for changing Wi-Fi. It removes device settings and requires setup again, so reserve it for persistent device or setup problems after ordinary network troubleshooting has failed. A Wi-Fi change by itself generally calls for selecting the network and entering its password—not erasing the Fire TV configuration.
