No—Xbox is not dead. But Microsoft has weakened the old case for buying an Xbox console: exclusive games matter less when Microsoft distributes more broadly, and Xbox services now reach beyond the console. The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally is part of that shift, not a portable Xbox Series S or Series X. It is a Windows gaming handheld with Xbox features, and it makes sense mainly for people who want a handheld PC—not for everyone looking for a simpler way to play their Xbox library.
What does “Xbox is dead” mean?
It depends on which part of Xbox you mean. The brand, games, services and console business are related, but they are not the same thing.
- The Xbox brand: Still active. Microsoft is repositioning it around games and services across devices, not announcing its end.
- Xbox consoles: Their role is changing. A console remains one way to access Xbox games, but it is no longer the only destination Microsoft is emphasizing.
- Xbox exclusives: Their value as a reason to buy the hardware has weakened as Microsoft pursues broader distribution. That does not mean every Xbox game is available on every platform.
- Xbox as an ecosystem: Game Pass, Xbox accounts, Windows gaming and cloud services extend the platform beyond a console.
The clearest verdict is that the console-first Xbox strategy is under pressure, while Xbox as a broader gaming ecosystem continues. “Dead” is too simple for a company that is still discussing future hardware and expanding Xbox features on Windows.
Why the old reason to buy an Xbox is weaker
The traditional console proposition
An Xbox console used to bring several advantages together: a straightforward living-room experience, access to an Xbox game library, backwards compatibility, online services and games that could make the hardware feel essential. The console was the centre of the arrangement; services and software helped make that box worth buying.

The emerging cross-device proposition
Microsoft increasingly presents Xbox as a way to play across console, PC, handheld and cloud. In its March 11, 2026 discussion of next-generation Xbox, the company described access across devices through purchases, subscriptions and other leading storefronts, and said Xbox Mode on Windows 11 began with the ROG Xbox Ally, with wider Windows deployment planned. Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox discussion shows the tension: reaching more players may benefit Xbox games and services, but it makes the console less indispensable.
That is a commercially understandable strategy for Microsoft: sell games and subscriptions to a wider audience rather than depend on one hardware base. For buyers, it means the Xbox name alone is less of a reason to choose an Xbox console. The relevant questions are whether the console fits your library and how you want to play.
A reset is not a cancellation
Microsoft’s February 20, 2026 leadership announcement named Asha Sharma CEO of Microsoft Gaming after Phil Spencer’s retirement and Sarah Bond’s departure. On July 6, Xbox described a strategic reset that included approximately 1,600 role eliminations and four studios leaving Xbox management. Those changes point to significant restructuring, but they do not prove that Microsoft has canceled console hardware.

In March, Microsoft discussed next-generation Xbox work; its July reset statement also addressed the company’s approach to hardware. Neither announcement establishes a launch date, price, final specifications or backwards-compatibility policy. The evidence supports a changed role for consoles, not a confirmed end to them. Microsoft’s leadership announcement and Xbox’s July reset statement document the transition without resolving what a future console will offer.
What the ROG Xbox Ally actually is
The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are ASUS-made handheld gaming PCs developed with Microsoft. They run Windows and combine built-in controls with Xbox software features. Microsoft describes them as bringing Xbox functionality together with Windows flexibility. The distinction matters: these are not Xbox consoles in the technical sense of Series X or Series S, and the Xbox branding does not make the full Xbox console library playable locally.
The official ROG Xbox Ally product page lists Xbox-style controls, Hall-effect analog triggers, assignable rear buttons, dual analog sticks, HD haptics and a six-axis IMU. The Xbox Wire launch announcement identifies the Ally X with an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of RAM and more storage than the standard Ally. These specifications distinguish the models, but do not establish a fixed performance advantage in every game.

How the models differ in the confirmed details
| Model | Confirmed distinction | What that means for a buyer |
|---|---|---|
| ROG Xbox Ally | Standard model in the Windows-based handheld range; the cited Microsoft launch material describes the Ally X as having more storage. | Consider it if you want the Xbox-oriented handheld-PC format and do not need the Ally X’s specified higher-end configuration. |
| ROG Xbox Ally X | AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB RAM and twice the storage of the standard model, according to Microsoft’s June 8, 2025 announcement. | Its listed hardware gives more headroom on paper, but actual results depend on the game and settings. |
Microsoft does not establish a stable retail price in the cited product information. Launch-era prices were reported at approximately $599.99 for the standard Ally and $999.99 for the Ally X, but treat those as market references, not evergreen official prices. Check the exact model and current retailer price before buying; console prices also changed worldwide effective August 1, 2026, according to Xbox’s price update.
Which games can you play on it?
“Xbox game” can refer to several different versions or ways to play. Before buying, check the game’s platform listing and whether you intend to install it, stream it or connect to a console.

You can use PC storefronts such as the Xbox PC app, Microsoft Store, Steam and Epic Games Store, though separate launchers can add setup and maintenance.
- Xbox Play Anywhere games: Qualifying titles may share ownership and progress between Xbox consoles and Windows PC. This does not apply to every Xbox purchase.
- Cloud gaming: Streaming can provide access to supported games, subject to the relevant subscription tier, title availability, region, connection quality and latency. A streamed game is not installed locally.
- Remote Play: A compatible game can be streamed from your own Xbox console over a network. This depends on that console being available and the connection working well.
- Console-only games: They are not automatically playable on the handheld. They need a Windows version, cloud availability, Remote Play or another supported way to access them.

What the handheld does well—and what it asks of you
Portability and PC libraries
The strongest reason to consider the Ally is handheld play. It can put compatible PC games, Xbox-related Windows games and supported streaming options in a portable format. If you already own PC games across storefronts, that library may make the device more useful than it is for someone whose games exist only as Xbox console purchases.
Xbox account integration and a dedicated Xbox experience can reduce some of the friction of a Windows handheld. Microsoft also lists three months of Game Pass Premium with qualifying purchases. That is a limited promotion, not permanent access: Microsoft says the subscription continues at the regular monthly rate unless canceled. Check the offer terms and renewal date, and confirm that the games you want are in the relevant tier.
Windows convenience has limits
The device remains a PC. Depending on how you use it, you may need to manage Windows, graphics and firmware updates, multiple launchers, controller profiles, storage and game-specific settings. Windows pop-ups, background tasks and inconsistent suspend-and-resume behaviour can make the experience less predictable than a dedicated console. These are trade-offs of the platform, not proof of a defect in the Ally.

A dock and compatible charger can connect the handheld to a display and peripherals, making it a compact PC for another setting. Results depend on dock, power delivery, display and cooling compatibility; a docked Ally is not automatically as simple as plugging in a console.
Performance, battery and heat are linked
A handheld has to balance frame rate, resolution, power use, heat, fan noise and battery life. Higher-performance settings can raise heat and noise and use battery faster. Results vary with the game, resolution, power setting, drivers and whether you are installing or streaming it. Microsoft cautions that performance varies by game and specifications on its product page. Do not buy on the assumption that the Ally X will deliver a particular frame rate or reproduce Series X performance in portable form.
Who should buy the ROG Xbox Ally?
It may fit if you want a handheld PC
- Portability matters more to you than a simple TV-first console setup.
- You already have a substantial Windows or Steam library, or want to use several PC storefronts.
- You value Game Pass and Xbox account integration but understand their limits on a Windows device.
- You are comfortable adjusting settings and handling occasional PC maintenance.
- You want a handheld that can also connect to an external display with compatible equipment.
Choose a conventional Xbox console if you want console simplicity
- Your main screen is a television and you want predictable, low-maintenance play.
- You own many Xbox console games and rely on console compatibility or backwards compatibility.
- You want the Xbox console experience rather than a Windows PC with Xbox features.
For someone who values Xbox libraries, Game Pass or convenience, multiplatform releases do not automatically make an Xbox console worthless. But if your main reason for buying a console is an exclusive game, check where that specific title is available before choosing hardware.
Look elsewhere if another ecosystem fits better
A PlayStation console may suit a buyer whose priority is Sony’s catalog and a conventional living-room setup. A Steam Deck or another handheld may suit a Steam-first buyer who does not need Xbox branding. Compare current models, prices, battery behaviour and operating systems for your own use; those details change, and the evidence cited here does not establish a current value or performance winner among handhelds.

What Xbox’s future does—and does not—tell buyers
Microsoft’s direction is clear enough to describe but not to predict in detail: Xbox is being presented as a cross-device platform, while Microsoft continues to discuss next-generation hardware. Its March 2026 announcement supports the existence of ongoing next-generation work, not a guarantee of when a device will ship or what advantages it will have.
The strategic risk for Xbox hardware is that broad distribution can make the console less necessary. A future console could still appeal through convenience, library continuity, price or features, but Microsoft has not established which of those will distinguish it. The ROG Xbox Ally illustrates the broader approach; it does not settle the future of consoles or restore an exclusive-games rationale.
