Open the page you want to save, then use your browser’s Home-screen option: in Android Chrome, tap ⋮ → Add to home screen; on iPhone, tap Share → Add to Home Screen in Safari or Chrome. Android Chrome may offer Install for a web app instead of Create shortcut.
Choose the right Home-screen option
A Home-screen icon is usually a shortcut to a website, not a download of the whole site or a native app from an app store. Some sites can also be installed as web apps, which may open in a more app-like window and support features such as offline storage, notifications, or icon badges. What a web app can do depends on the site; even an app with offline support may not work fully without an internet connection. Google explains web apps and their features.

The labels and where an icon appears can vary with the browser, Android version, phone manufacturer, and Home-screen launcher. Google’s Android guidance notes that some Home-screen steps depend on Android version. Check Google’s Android Home-screen guidance if your menus differ.
Add a website to an Android Home screen in Chrome
- Open Chrome and go to the website or exact page you want to save.
- Tap More ⋮ beside the address bar.
- Tap Add to home screen.
- Tap Create shortcut.
- Keep the suggested name or change it, then tap Add.
The icon appears on the device’s Home screen. Google says a shortcut bearing the Chrome logo opens in Chrome. See Google’s Android Chrome shortcut instructions.

If Android Chrome offers Install
Install is a different option from Create shortcut. When Chrome recognizes a site as a web app, it can offer to install that app from the browser; this does not necessarily mean downloading a native app from Google Play.
- Open the site in Chrome and tap ⋮.
- Tap Add to home screen, then tap Install.
- Complete any confirmation shown on screen.
An installed web app may launch without the usual browser presentation and may provide site-supported features such as offline storage or notifications. Those capabilities are not guaranteed for every site. Google’s Android web-app guide covers installation and removal.

Add a website to an iPhone Home Screen with Safari
- Open Safari and navigate to the website or specific page.
- Tap Share.
- Scroll down in the share sheet and tap Add to Home Screen.
- Edit the displayed name if you want, then tap Add.
The icon is added to the iPhone Home Screen. Safari is the straightforward first choice on iPhone, and Apple documents this flow in its iPhone Home-screen instructions.
Add a website from Chrome on iPhone
- Open Chrome and go to the page you want.
- Tap Share beside the address bar.
- Choose Add to Home Screen.
- Edit the name or details if desired, then tap Add.
Chrome is a valid alternative if you browse in it regularly. Google says that on iPhone, a shortcut opens a web app when one is available; otherwise, it opens in the default browser. Google’s Chrome for iPhone steps and its iPhone web-app behavior notes explain the flow.

Save a specific page, not just the site’s front page
Open the exact page before creating the icon; the shortcut is made from the page currently displayed. This can work for a stable article, account portal, or other page with its own URL. The browser feature cannot guarantee that a site will preserve every deep link: a site may redirect to its homepage, require a fresh sign-in, or use a temporary or session-specific address. Search results, checkout pages, password-reset links, and other short-lived URLs are poor choices for permanent shortcuts. If the page keeps redirecting, try a stable landing page or the site’s official app.
Shortcut, web app, or native app?

A shortcut is not proof that a site is legitimate. Check the domain before saving or installing it, especially for banking, payment, password, or government services. Review an unexpected name change before accepting an Android web-app installation; Google warns that a drastic name change can be a sign of malicious behavior. Google’s web-app guidance includes this warning.

Troubleshoot a missing option or icon
“Add to Home screen” is not in the menu
- Confirm that the page is open in the full browser, not inside another app’s built-in browser.
- Look through the full menu or share sheet; item positions and wording can differ.
- On Android Chrome, a supported web app may show Install after you select Add to home screen, rather than offering Create shortcut.
- If a site is handing off to a native app or redirecting, return to the browser page and try again. The available option depends on the browser and site.
The icon is not on the first Home-screen page
On Android, swipe through the Home-screen pages and check the app drawer for the site or web app. The launcher may have placed it elsewhere. Use that launcher’s own edit or organization controls to move the icon; the exact controls vary by device. If you installed a web app, Android’s app settings can also help you confirm that it is present.
The shortcut opens a different browser
On Android, a shortcut with the Chrome logo opens in Chrome. On iPhone, Chrome’s documented behavior depends on whether the site is available as a web app; otherwise, the shortcut opens in the default browser. The result therefore depends on the shortcut type and platform, rather than being identical on every phone.

The shortcut opens the homepage instead of the page you saved
- Open the intended page again and check that the address bar shows its URL.
- Create a new shortcut from that page.
- If the page requires an account, sign in and test whether the site retains the session.
- If the site consistently redirects, use a stable page or its official app instead of a temporary or session-specific link.
Some redirects and login behavior are controlled by the website, so recreating the icon cannot always preserve a deep link.
Remove a website icon or uninstall its web app
Android
To remove only the Home-screen icon, touch and hold it and choose the launcher’s Remove option if available. That usually removes the icon, not an installed web app. To uninstall an installed web app, go to Settings → Apps (or the equivalent app list on your phone), find it, and choose the uninstall option. Google documents web-app removal through Android app settings in its Chrome web-app guide.
iPhone
Touch and hold the icon and use the delete or remove command shown. The wording can vary depending on how iOS treats that particular icon; Chrome’s help describes deleting a website shortcut using Delete Bookmark. Removing the Home-screen item does not mean the website itself has been deleted. Google’s iPhone shortcut guidance describes its Chrome shortcut removal flow.
