It kept essentials such as place search, map browsing and directions, but left out tools including offline maps and live location sharing. It is still described in Google’s Maps Help documentation, although that does not guarantee it can be installed on every current Android device.
What was Google Maps Go?
Google Maps Go was a lightweight Maps experience created for Android Go devices and other phones with constrained resources. Google introduced it as part of Android Oreo (Go edition), announced on December 5, 2017. Android Go was an operating-system edition intended to make entry-level phones usable despite limited memory, storage, processing power or connectivity. Maps Go was one of a group of optimized Google apps that also included Google Go, YouTube Go, Gmail Go, Google Assistant Go and Files Go. Google’s Android Oreo (Go edition) announcement said the launch-era devices had 512 MB to 1 GB of memory; that is historical context, not a current requirement for Maps Go.
These names refer to different things: Android Go is the operating-system edition, Google Maps Go is the lighter mapping product, and Navigation for Google Maps Go is a separate companion app for turn-by-turn guidance.
Why make a lighter Maps app?
On an inexpensive or older phone, a large app can consume scarce storage and strain limited memory. A phone may also be used where mobile data is costly or connections are slow or intermittent. Google’s aim with Android Go was to make entry-level devices more functional, not simply cheaper. That made a reduced Maps experience relevant to budget-phone owners worldwide, including people in markets where connectivity is less reliable—not only to users in any one region.

Google said the average app ran 15% faster on Android Oreo Go. That was Google’s claim about the Go-edition environment overall, not a Maps Go-specific benchmark. Google described Maps Go as built to run smoothly on devices with limited memory, but the cited documentation does not establish a specific speed improvement, app size, RAM use or battery saving for Maps Go itself. Google’s launch announcement and its Maps Go Help page support the design goal, not a universal performance guarantee.
What could Maps Go do?
Google’s support documentation describes a useful set of everyday online mapping functions. Depending on location and feature availability, Maps Go can provide:

- Carrier: This phone is locked to Tracfone, which means this device can only be used on the Tracfone wireless network. Tracfone plan required, activating is easy, just 3 steps.
- DISPLAY: Immersive viewing on a 6.7-inch super-bright 120Hz display with powerful stereo speakers and Bass Boost for cinematic entertainment.
- CAMERA SYSTEM: Advanced 50MP Quad Pixel camera captures sharp, detailed photos and videos in any lighting condition
- PERFORMANCE: Lightning-fast 5G connectivity paired with a powerful processor and RAM Boost for smooth multitasking.
- BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.
- Search for places and addresses, with business details such as hours, phone numbers, ratings and reviews.
- Browse maps and see locations.
- Get driving, transit, walking and cycling directions, with route alternatives where available.
- Choose routes that avoid tolls, ferries or highways where supported.
- Use map layers such as traffic, transit, biking, terrain and satellite, subject to regional coverage.
- Access some Street View imagery, scheduled departure or arrival directions, and two-wheeler directions in supported areas.
These capabilities are not uniform worldwide: transit coverage, Street View, two-wheeler routing and other functions depend on location. Google’s Maps Go feature guide describes the available functions and their regional limits.
Turn-by-turn navigation required a second app
Maps Go did not necessarily provide voice-guided navigation by itself. Google documents a separate app, Navigation for Google Maps Go, which users must install for turn-by-turn guidance. In July 2018, Google outlined a rollout covering car, bus and walking use cases for people with low-memory phones or unstable connections. Navigation availability still depends on location and device or software support; the announcement does not mean Maps Go matched every mode or feature in full Google Maps. Google’s July 2018 announcement describes the rollout.

What Maps Go left out
Maps Go’s narrower feature set is a product trade-off, not a list of bugs. Google says these full Maps functions are not supported in Maps Go:
| Capability | Maps Go status |
|---|---|
| Real-time location sharing | Not supported |
| Download maps for offline use | Not supported |
| Offline navigation | Not supported |
| Report map-data problems | Not supported |
| Edit place information | Not supported |
| Measure distance between places | Not supported |
| Add private place labels | Not supported |
That makes Maps Go a poor substitute for downloaded maps on a trip without reliable service. Intermittent connectivity may make a lighter online app appealing, but it does not turn Maps Go into an offline map tool. For reporting map-data errors, Google directs users to the full Google Maps app. The limitations are documented in Google’s Maps Go Help page.

- TYPE IT IN. TRANSFORM IT FAST: Enhance any shot in seconds on your smartphone by using Photo Assist² with Galaxy AI.³ Add objects, restore details, or apply new styles by simply typing or tapping

Who should use it—and who should choose full Maps?
Maps Go makes the most sense when the phone is resource-constrained and the user mainly needs online search, place details and straightforward directions. It may also suit Android Go device owners who want a mapping app designed with limited memory in mind.
Choose full Google Maps instead if you depend on offline navigation, live location sharing, place editing or reporting, private labels, distance measurement, or other advanced workflows. On a modern phone that already runs full Maps comfortably, choosing Go may mean giving up useful features without solving a pressing performance problem.

How to install and use Maps Go
- Open the Google Play Store and search for Google Maps Go.
- Install it if it is available for your device and region.
- If you need turn-by-turn voice guidance, search for and install Navigation for Google Maps Go separately.
- Open Maps Go, search for a place or address, then tap Directions.
- Choose an available travel mode and tap Navigate to start guidance, if supported in your location.
Google says Maps Go requires Chrome and may sign users in through Chrome. If Maps Go shows an address bar, Google advises updating Chrome and reopening the app. If it reports “No internet connection,” reconnect to Wi-Fi or mobile data or move to a place with a stronger signal. Google’s installation and troubleshooting instructions provide these steps.
Is Google Maps Go still available?
Google’s Maps Help page, checked August 16, 2026, still describes Maps Go, its installation path, capabilities and limitations. It says the app was preinstalled on Android Oreo Go devices and was also available through Google Play. Current availability is not universal: eligibility can vary with Android version, device, country and Play Store distribution. Google’s documentation establishes that it still documents the product, not that every phone can install it.
Android Go itself continued after its 2017 launch. Google later described Android 13 (Go edition), including Google Play system updates, but that platform update does not establish that Maps Go received the same feature updates. Google’s Android 13 (Go edition) announcement is about the platform rather than a guarantee about this individual app. Older devices can also encounter compatibility limits as Android and Maps support changes; see Google’s guidance on outdated Maps versions.
Maps Go’s central trade-off remains clear: it offers core online mapping for constrained hardware, while omitting tools that many full Maps users rely on. It can be a sensible lightweight option if those basics are enough; it is not a full replacement for Google Maps.
