Toyota’s Solid-State Batteries Could Eventually Reach 932 Miles—But No Production EV Does Yet

Short answer: Toyota has not announced a production electric vehicle with a verified 932-mile range. The approximately 932-mile (1,500-kilometer) figure comes from a long-term battery roadmap and describes a possible later-generation development, not an EPA-certified specification available to buyers.

Toyota’s current public target is to commercialize its first all-solid-state battery around 2027–2028, with charging from 10% to 80% in about 10 minutes. That first battery should not automatically be confused with the later, more ambitious 1,500-km target.

Where Toyota’s 932-mile figure comes from

Toyota’s 2023 battery roadmap described several battery families rather than one imminent “932-mile battery.” The roadmap separates conventional next-generation lithium-ion work from solid-state development and presents range figures as staged targets.

Roadmap stage Technology or description Publicly discussed range Status
Next-generation BEV Performance-oriented lithium-ion battery About 1,000 km (621 miles) in Toyota’s projections Separate from the later solid-state aspiration
First all-solid-state battery Toyota’s initial solid-state BEV battery Targeted for commercialization around 2027–2028 Development and production planning, not a finished consumer specification
Later solid-state evolution Higher-level or future-evolution battery About 1,200 km (746 miles), with potential up to 1,500 km (932 miles) Long-term potential, not a verified production rating

Toyota says range gains would come from a combination of higher energy density, improved aerodynamics, lower vehicle weight and greater overall efficiency—not chemistry alone. Its roadmap and presentation materials are available from Toyota, its battery technology presentation and its UK technology overview.

The 1,500-km number is approximately 932 statute miles by unit conversion. Reports from Autoblog and The Torque Report identify it as a later-stage possibility, not the guaranteed range of Toyota’s first solid-state model.

The first solid-state Toyota is a different promise

Toyota has said it is aiming to commercialize an all-solid-state battery around 2027–2028. The company has also discussed charging from approximately 10% to 80% in 10 minutes or less for that first solid-state target. That means a partial fast charge—not empty to full, and not 932 miles added in 10 minutes.

The charging claim appears in Toyota’s public materials, including its 10-minute charging explanation and the company’s solid-state cooperation announcement. Actual charging speed would depend on the vehicle’s maximum rate, charger output, battery temperature, state of charge, cable limits and the shape of the charging curve.

What “solid-state” changes—and what it does not

A conventional lithium-ion battery uses a liquid electrolyte to move ions between electrodes. An all-solid-state design replaces that liquid with a solid material. In principle, this can enable higher energy density, more flexible packaging, faster charging and improved resistance to leakage, with possible thermal-safety benefits.

Those are potential engineering advantages, not guarantees. A vehicle pack still needs casing, thermal management, electronics, wiring, safety structures and control software. Cell-level energy-density gains do not translate one-for-one into driving range.

Toyota’s Idemitsu partnership targets the manufacturing bottleneck

Toyota and Idemitsu Kosan announced cooperation on sulfide-based solid electrolytes. Their work covers materials, processing, supply-chain development and methods for mass production, with commercialization targeted for 2027–2028.

The difficult step is producing reliable automotive cells at scale. Manufacturers must make defect-free electrolyte layers, maintain contact between solid materials as they expand and contract, prevent cracking and degradation, achieve consistent performance across large cell volumes, reduce cost and validate durability over years of use. Toyota’s announcement establishes a development and manufacturing program; it does not establish that high-volume production problems are fully solved.

Why 932 miles is not automatically 932 EPA miles

Toyota’s published roadmap uses projected vehicle figures and references the CLTC cycle in comparison material. CLTC results are generally more optimistic than U.S. EPA results because the cycles use different speeds, temperatures and assumptions. Toyota’s corporate disclosures can be found in its 2025 Form 20-F and annual report.

Therefore, 1,500 km should not be presented as an EPA-certified range. The eventual result would depend on the production vehicle, battery pack, tires, payload, weather, speed, terrain, climate-control use and battery aging. Toyota has not published a final pack capacity, pack weight, price or vehicle efficiency for a 932-mile model.

What the technology could mean for EV ownership

Longer trips or smaller packs

Higher energy density could be used to extend range, but automakers could instead use a smaller battery for the same range. Smaller packs would reduce weight, cost and material demand, although Toyota has not published a final production design.

Charging and infrastructure constraints

A 10%–80% charge in 10 minutes for a very large pack could require extremely high power. The vehicle, charger, cables, cooling system, electrical grid and charging site would all need to support it. Existing fast chargers will not automatically deliver the advertised rate.

Early-product trade-offs

An initial solid-state vehicle could be expensive, limited in volume or geography and subject to first-generation reliability and servicing questions. “Commercialization” does not necessarily mean mass-market availability, U.S. availability or pricing comparable with today’s lithium-ion EVs.

What can buyers purchase now?

No source reviewed identifies a purchasable Toyota or Lexus vehicle with the 932-mile specification, a reservation program or a U.S. launch date. Buyers who need an EV today must consider current conventional-battery models instead, such as the Toyota bZ4X, Lexus RZ, or long-range alternatives such as the Lucid Air and Tesla Model S. Their current range, trims, prices and availability vary by model year and market and should be checked on the linked official pages.

Public networks such as Electrify America and ChargePoint can support today’s EVs, but neither network demonstrates Toyota’s future charging target.

How to fact-check future battery headlines

  1. Determine whether the number refers to a cell, a complete pack or a vehicle.
  2. Check whether it is a target, prototype result, laboratory measurement or certified rating.
  3. Identify the test cycle: CLTC, WLTP, EPA or a real-world drive.
  4. Find out whether the figure belongs to the first solid-state battery or a later generation.
  5. Separate a commercialization objective from a mass-market or regional launch date.
  6. Read “10-minute charging” as the stated 10%–80% window unless Toyota says otherwise.
  7. Look for a named model, final specifications and independent verification.

The Bottom Line

Toyota has a documented solid-state battery program and a current commercialization objective around 2027–2028. Its approximately 932-mile figure remains a long-term, later-generation possibility—not a currently verified EPA range, a promised first-model specification or a vehicle you can buy today.
