KB5040555 was a genuine Windows 11 Insider Preview update released on August 2, 2024. It moved eligible Beta Channel devices on the Windows 11 23H2-based branch to OS Build 22635.4005. It was not a normal public security update, and it is obsolete by 2026. Microsoft delivered it through Windows Update to enrolled Beta testers, with modest stability fixes and several documented shell and input issues.

Who was eligible?
KB5040555 was intended for Windows Insider participants in the Beta Channel, particularly devices already tracking the Windows 11 23H2-based 22635.xxxx branch. It was not offered to every Windows 11 23H2 installation.
The Beta Channel is generally more conservative than Dev or Canary, but it remains pre-release software. Microsoft warned that Insider features could be changed, removed, replaced, or never released publicly. Release Preview and general availability are separate tracks with different stability expectations.

What changed in Build 22635.4005?
Explorer crash fix
Microsoft documented a fix for sporadic explorer.exe crashes affecting some Insiders during recent flights. This was a targeted stability correction, not evidence of a major Windows interface or feature release.
General servicing improvements
The announcement describes additional general improvements and fixes for the relevant Insider build. Feature exposure was staged, so two PCs on 22635.4005 could show different experiences. Build equality did not guarantee identical feature flags, regional availability, or account-based experiences.
Known issues in the release
Taskbar-related Explorer crashes
Microsoft continued tracking an explorer.exe crash that could occur when closing applications from the taskbar. Fixing one Explorer crash path did not eliminate every independent shell regression. A later Beta announcement for Build 22635.4010 still documented continued work on taskbar-related crashes: Microsoft’s August 9, 2024 follow-up.
File Explorer Home focus
On systems with the updated Recent, Favorites, and Shared sections on File Explorer Home, keyboard focus could be lost when selecting an unselected tab item.
Emoji, kaomoji, and symbols panel
The emoji panel could close when switching to the kaomoji or symbols sections, or after selecting an emoji. These were usability problems rather than a documented broad data-loss or security emergency, but they reinforced the normal risks of preview software.
How Beta users received KB5040555
- Open Settings.
- Go to Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Install the offered Insider preview build and restart when prompted.
Microsoft also described a Windows Update toggle equivalent to Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available. Enabling it could make staged features available sooner, but it did not guarantee every experiment would appear.
The official announcement presents KB5040555 as a Beta Channel flight rather than a conventional standalone Microsoft Update Catalog package for ordinary users. Avoid unofficial ISO or “KB download” mirrors when trying to reproduce an old Insider build.

If you were deciding in 2024
- Reasonable fit: Beta testers, enthusiasts, developers, and IT teams validating software against pre-release Windows.
- Poor fit: Production workstations, critical business systems, banking or exam PCs, clinical devices, and computers requiring dependable driver, peripheral, and application compatibility.
Preview software can be legitimate without being appropriate for a primary computer.
If you are deciding in 2026
Do not seek out KB5040555 specifically. It is nearly two years old and is not the current Beta build. If you remain in the Insider program, use the newer build offered through Windows Update. Microsoft maintains current branches and servicing information on its Windows 11 release-information page.
Why features may be missing
- Microsoft used gradual, staged rollouts.
- Feature flags could differ between otherwise identical PCs.
- Region, account type, and eligibility could affect availability.
- Features could later be modified, removed, or withheld from general release.
Microsoft separately said Copilot availability was rolling out gradually across markets; users in the European Economic Area could download the Copilot experience as a Microsoft Store app. That should not be read as a universal KB5040555 installation.
Troubleshooting after installation
The update does not appear
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program and confirm the channel.
- Use
winverto check the current build. - The device may be on another branch, already on a newer build, blocked by organizational policy, or outside the staged offer.
- Because the flight is superseded, a current device should not be forced back to it.
Windows Update repeatedly fails
- Back up important files before installing preview software.
- Ensure sufficient free storage.
- Disconnect unnecessary peripherals, restart, and retry.
- Use the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter available on your installed version.
- If the PC is already newer than 22635.4005, install the current offered build rather than forcing this package.
Explorer crashes continue
- Open Task Manager, select Windows Explorer, and choose Restart.
- Install the next available Insider flight if one is offered.
- Report reproducible behavior through Feedback Hub.
- For a business-critical PC, return to a stable Windows release instead of relying on an obsolete preview build.
Rolling back
Windows may provide Settings > System > Recovery > Go back, but the option is time-limited and depends on retained rollback files and how the upgrade was installed. Its presence is not guaranteed.
KB5040555 versus current Insider builds
Build 22635.4005 was current on August 2, 2024, but later Beta flights superseded it. The 22635.xxxx label identifies that historical branch; it does not make the build a current Windows version upgrade or a supported public release. Use Windows Update and Microsoft’s current release-health documentation to identify the appropriate build for your device.
