Common Mercado Livre and Mercado Pago Scams in Brazil—and How to Avoid Them

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest rule is simple: keep a Mercado Livre purchase inside its official checkout, and never ship an item or return money based on a screenshot. Confirm orders and payments by opening the Mercado Livre or Mercado Pago app yourself. A direct Pix, QR-code payment, bank transfer, or external link can have different protections from a purchase completed through Mercado Livre.

This guide focuses on Brazil. There is no reliable public dataset here that ranks scams by frequency, so it covers recurring, practically important patterns rather than claiming a statistical top ten.

Why the payment route matters

“Mercado Pago” can describe several different transactions, and they do not all have the same remedy. Before deciding what protection may apply, identify how the money moved.

Transaction What to check Possible route if there is a problem
Purchase through Mercado Livre checkout Confirm the order and payment appear in your Mercado Livre account. Open the purchase complaint process and check the terms for that order.
Mercado Pago checkout on another website Check the transaction in your Mercado Pago account and the terms for that specific purchase. Mercado Pago’s separate Compra Garantida terms may apply to eligible purchases.
Pix or QR code paid directly to a person Check the recipient and amount before confirming; keep the receipt and transaction ID. Contact your bank or payment institution promptly. MED may be available for eligible fraud cases.
Payment link Verify the recipient, amount, seller, and transaction in the official account; branding alone proves nothing. Use the payment provider’s official support and check whether the transaction qualifies for any protection.
Card payment Identify the merchant and transaction in the card issuer’s records. Contact the card issuer about an unauthorized transaction or dispute, and separately use any relevant marketplace process.

Mercado Livre says its buyer-seller chat is recorded, payments are handled through Mercado Pago, and shipping can be tracked through its system. Keeping the order and conversation there gives you a record if you need to raise a complaint. See Mercado Livre’s security guidance.

Scams that target buyers

Requests to pay outside Mercado Livre

A seller may offer a discount for direct Pix, send a QR code or payment link, ask for a deposit to reserve an item, or claim the marketplace checkout is unavailable. If you pay outside the marketplace, the purchase may not qualify for Mercado Livre’s Compra Garantida. Its terms specifically exclude certain QR-code payments and payments made outside Mercado Livre.

  • Do not pay a separate Pix or QR code just to get a discount or reserve the listing.
  • Keep questions and purchase-related communication in the platform chat.
  • Check that the order appears in your account after payment.

Read the current Mercado Livre Compra Garantida terms for the transaction and product category.

Fake listings, counterfeit goods, and items that never arrive

A price far below comparable offers, a new seller with little history, stock photos for an expensive item, vague specifications, or pressure to switch to WhatsApp are reasons to slow down—not proof by themselves that a seller is fraudulent. For valuable products, ask questions through platform messaging and review the seller’s reputation, listing details, condition, accessories, compatibility, warranty, and delivery terms before buying.

Keep the listing and seller details. If the item is counterfeit, materially different from its description, damaged, or missing, document the problem and use the platform’s complaint or return process. A defective or disappointing product can be a commercial dispute rather than a deliberate scam; Procon may be relevant if the platform process does not resolve it.

Phishing, fake support, and account-takeover messages

Fraudulent email, SMS, WhatsApp, or social-media messages may claim a payment failed, a refund is waiting, a package is held, or your account will be suspended unless you “confirm” details. Their links can imitate Mercado Livre, Mercado Pago, a bank, or a delivery company and steal passwords, card details, or one-time codes.

  • Do not open an unsolicited link or attachment, and do not install software at a supposed support agent’s request.
  • Never share your password or verification code, or allow remote access to your device.
  • Open the official app yourself and look for the order, refund, payment, or security alert there.
  • For an email claiming to be from Mercado Pago, its guidance says official emails end in @mercadopago.com; still verify the issue in your account rather than trusting a message alone.

Mercado Pago’s security guidance explains how to handle suspicious messages. Start support from inside the official app or by manually opening the official website, not by replying to an unsolicited contact.

Fake delivery, customs-fee, or refund requests

A message may say you must pay an extra delivery or customs charge, or click a link to release a refund. Do not pay or enter card details through the message. Check the order and shipping status in your Mercado Livre account; if a charge or refund is real, verify it through the official account flow.

Account takeover

If someone gets access to your account, they may make purchases, change delivery details, withdraw money, or message your contacts. Use Mercado Pago’s account-in-danger help and account security guidance from a trusted device. Secure the associated email and phone number as well as the marketplace account.

Scams that target sellers

Fake Pix receipt

A buyer may send an edited screenshot and urge you to ship immediately. A receipt image, email, or message is not proof of credit. Open Mercado Pago yourself and check the activity or sales record, or verify the credit in your bank account. Match the amount, status, buyer, and order before releasing the item. Mercado Pago describes false Pix receipts as a recurring fraud pattern in its guide to identifying fake Pix payments.

Overpayment followed by a refund demand

A supposed buyer claims to have paid too much and asks you to return the difference. The original payment may be fictitious, reversed, or linked to a compromised account or card. Do not send a refund based on a screenshot or message. Confirm the payment independently and, for a platform sale, use the platform’s own refund flow. Mercado Pago describes this as a “value extra and refund” scam in its social-commerce security guidance.

Impersonated support or pressure to hand over goods

A fake support agent may ask for a verification code, password, CVV, screen sharing, remote-control software, or a transfer to “unlock” funds. A supposed buyer may create urgency, claim an emergency, or send a courier before payment is confirmed. Do not comply. Initiate support from the official app, and hand over or ship goods only after verifying the payment or order in your account.

Chargebacks and disputed card payments

A buyer may dispute a card transaction after receiving the product. Seller protection, where available, depends on the transaction and program requirements; evidence of correct shipment and delivery can matter. Keep the listing, buyer messages, product photos and serial number, packaging photos, shipping receipt, tracking, delivery confirmation, and any case number. Mercado Pago says its seller-protection program may cover qualifying disputes subject to its conditions; see its seller guidance.

How to verify a purchase or payment

Before buying

  1. Open the Mercado Livre app or type the official website address yourself.
  2. Review the seller’s reputation, completed sales, reviews, and listing history.
  3. Compare the price with similar products and read the full description, including condition, warranty, accessories, compatibility, voltage, and delivery terms.
  4. Ask questions in the platform’s messaging system; do not follow a seller-supplied external payment link.
  5. After payment, confirm the order appears in your account and save the listing, description, seller details, and payment record.
  6. For a high-value item, document the unboxing and inspect identifying details such as serial numbers promptly.

Before shipping or handing over an item

  1. Open Mercado Pago or your bank independently—not through a buyer’s link.
  2. Check the transaction in the activity or sales section and confirm the amount, status, buyer, and order.
  3. Ignore screenshots, WhatsApp messages, email notifications, and claims that a payment is “pending but guaranteed.”
  4. Use only the platform-specified address and shipping method for a marketplace order.
  5. Photograph the item and identifying marks, packaging, and shipping label; keep tracking and proof of delivery.
  6. Do not return money until you have independently verified the original payment and its status.

When checking a suspicious message

  • Do not reply or click its link; open the app manually.
  • Check whether the stated order, payment, refund, or account alert exists in your account.
  • Inspect the sender and spelling, but do not treat a convincing sender name or logo as proof.
  • If the claimed transaction or alert is absent, treat the message as fraudulent and report it through the platform and, where relevant, the email or messaging service.

What Mercado Livre and Mercado Pago protection covers

Compra Garantida is conditional, not universal insurance. Mercado Livre’s marketplace terms describe qualifying cases such as non-delivery, buyer regret, or a product problem, subject to deadlines, category restrictions, and other conditions. The current page states up to 28 days from purchase for an item that does not arrive and up to 30 days from receipt for certain regret, defect, or “different from advertised” claims. It also lists exclusions, including certain QR-code payments, payments made outside Mercado Livre, money transfers, and excluded product categories. Check the current terms for your order.

A separate Mercado Pago Compra Garantida program applies to some eligible online product purchases made through Mercado Pago on another website. Its current page requires the buyer to be logged into a Mercado Pago account, gives 14 days to open a non-delivery complaint, and excludes Pix payments from that program. Services, subscriptions, digital products, and some other categories are also excluded.

These terms concern different purchase contexts, so one does not establish coverage for the other. A Mercado Pago logo, link, or payment receipt does not by itself make a transaction eligible. Check the terms displayed for the specific payment method, purchase, product, and complaint deadline.

What to do after a scam

If you paid by Pix

  1. Contact the bank or payment institution that handled the Pix immediately through its official app or support channel.
  2. Report suspected fraud and ask the institution to request the Mecanismo Especial de Devolução (MED).
  3. Save the transaction ID, recipient details, messages, screenshots, listing or profile details, URLs, and phone numbers.
  4. File a police report, secure compromised accounts, and block or replace compromised cards if relevant.
  5. Contact Mercado Pago or Mercado Livre if its account or transaction was involved; escalate unresolved issues to Procon, the Banco Central complaint channel, or the courts as appropriate.

According to the Banco Central’s Pix security guidance, request MED through your institution as quickly as possible and within 80 days. MED is not an automatic refund or insurance: it is for eligible fraud cases, depends on investigation and available funds, and does not generally cover ordinary product or service disagreements or a Pix sent to the wrong person. The Banco Central explains these limits in its fraud and scam FAQs.

If a card was used

  • Freeze or cancel the card through the issuer’s official channel and dispute unauthorized transactions through its process.
  • Secure the associated Mercado Pago and email accounts.
  • Keep records and use the platform complaint process separately if the transaction was also a marketplace purchase.
  • Avoid private negotiations with the suspected scammer.

If your account was taken over

  • Use Mercado Pago’s official account-in-danger route.
  • Change the password from a trusted device and secure the associated email and phone number.
  • Review recent purchases, withdrawals, cards, Pix keys, addresses, and account activity; report unauthorized transactions promptly.
  • Warn contacts if fraudulent messages were sent from your account.

If you shipped merchandise after a fake payment

Do not try to confront or locate the recipient yourself. Preserve communications, the listing, payment records, shipping receipt, tracking, and delivery confirmation. Report the incident to Mercado Livre or Mercado Pago and the police. If a payment dispute is opened, respond through its official case channel with the shipping evidence.

If you only received a suspicious message

Do not click, pay, reply, or share information. Check your account directly, report the message, and delete it once you have preserved any details needed for a report.

Evidence to keep

For buyers

  • Listing URL or ID, offer screenshots, seller profile, and platform chat.
  • Order number, payment receipt, transaction ID, and tracking history.
  • Photos or video of the package and product, especially damage or identifying marks.
  • Any external phone numbers, email addresses, links, or payment instructions involved.

For sellers

  • Listing and product photos, serial numbers, and buyer messages.
  • Payment transaction record showing its status in the account.
  • Photos of the item, packaging, label, and dispatch process.
  • Shipping receipt, tracking number, proof of delivery, and platform case number.

Is it a scam, a purchase dispute, or an ordinary mistake?

Situation Likely first route
Payment made outside Mercado Livre Contact the bank or payment provider, report suspected fraud, and ask about MED if it was an eligible Pix fraud case.
Item does not arrive in a platform purchase Open a Mercado Livre complaint and check Compra Garantida terms and deadlines.
Item is counterfeit, materially different, or damaged Document it and use the platform complaint or return process; consider Procon if unresolved.
Seller receives a fake Pix receipt Do not ship; report the attempted fraud.
Card payment is disputed after delivery Respond through the official dispute channel with transaction, shipping, and delivery evidence.
Unauthorized account transaction Secure the account, notify the platform and financial institution, and dispute the transaction through the relevant channel.
Pix sent to the wrong recipient by mistake Contact the institution promptly, but do not assume MED applies; a mistaken transfer is not automatically a fraud case.
Buyer and seller disagree about quality Use the commercial complaint or return process; disagreement alone does not establish a scam.

A low price, a new seller, an external payment link, or a later card dispute is a warning sign or a risk to assess—not proof by itself of fraud. Pix is not inherently unsafe; the practical risks include social engineering, recipient substitution, false receipts, account compromise, and authorized transfers that may be difficult to recover.
