The TAG Heuer Connected x Super Mario Limited Edition was a 2021 luxury smartwatch collaboration between TAG Heuer and Nintendo, limited to 2,000 watches. It paired a steel Connected watch with Mario-themed design details and activity animations. Its launch has long passed; anyone considering one in 2026 is looking at old stock or a resale unit, not a new release, and current availability and prices are not established here.
What was the TAG Heuer Connected x Super Mario Limited Edition?
Launched on July 15, 2021, the watch was the first Mario-themed edition in a collaboration TAG Heuer described as a long-term partnership. It was a digital smartwatch built on TAG Heuer’s Connected platform—not a mechanical watch with a Mario-themed movement. Its combination of luxury-watch styling, connected functions and licensed software made the collaboration more than a themed watch face, but the Mario elements were primarily a design and motivational layer rather than a new fitness technology.
TAG Heuer’s launch material limited production to 2,000 pieces. A retrospective from the brand also lists the watch among its 2021 releases (TAG Heuer’s 2021 year-end review).
Design: Mario details on a substantial steel watch
The case is steel, measuring 45 mm across and 13.5 mm thick. That is a large, thick format, so wrist fit is worth checking in person if possible. Red lacquer on the bezel graduations and pushers adds color without turning the whole case into a cartoon prop. The crown carries Mario’s “M,” and three bezel markers reference familiar items: a Super Mushroom at 3 o’clock, a pipe at 6, and a Super Star at 9.

The screw-down caseback is engraved with limited-edition wording. The steel folding clasp also carries Mario “M” branding. A quick-change strap system and two supplied straps let the owner switch between black leather over red rubber and red perforated rubber. TAG Heuer’s launch materials list a dedicated travel case as part of the presentation.
The manufacturer’s launch material specifies a steel case. Hodinkee described it as titanium, so published descriptions conflict; the more direct manufacturer specification supports steel. Buyers comparing listings should check the actual watch and its documents rather than rely on a seller’s short description (TAG Heuer launch material; Hodinkee’s description).

How the Mario activity animations work
Mario’s jumping, movement and reward loops translate naturally into a playful activity prompt. As the wearer progresses toward the daily step target, the animated face changes at four milestones:
- 25%: a Super Mushroom appears.
- 50%: Mario moves through a pipe.
- 75%: a Super Star appears.
- 100%: Mario reaches the Goal Pole.
Mario also greets the wearer in the morning. These animations add a game-like reward to ordinary step tracking; they do not establish that the watch measures fitness more accurately than other smartwatches.

Watch faces and what was exclusive
The limited edition shipped with an interactive Mario face and a broader Super Mario-themed interface. TAG Heuer described four Mario-related dial treatments: a pixel-art Timekeeping face inspired by the 1985 Super Mario Bros., two Heuer 02 variations—one colorful and one restrained—and an Orbital face with rotating Mario-related elements. The interface and reskinned faces used Super Mario colors.
It is useful to distinguish the animated face from the complete limited-edition treatment. TAG Heuer later indicated that the animated Mario face could become available on other newer Connected watches; that does not mean those watches reproduce the limited edition’s full interface, reskins, physical details or packaging. Battery, charging and feature figures above come from TAG Heuer’s launch material; they are manufacturer claims, not independent test results. Heart-rate and activity readings are estimates, not medical measurements. A 5 ATM rating describes water resistance under specified test conditions, not an assurance that an older watch remains sealed or is appropriate for every aquatic use. Check its current condition before exposing it to water.
Reference numbers and launch prices
Published reference numbers vary: TAG Heuer’s press material gives SBG8A13.EB0238, while Time+Tide and Revolution Watch list SBG8A13.BT6247. The sources do not establish why the references differ. When assessing a particular watch, compare its reference and serial number with the case, warranty card, box and seller documentation rather than assuming one listing is definitive (Time+Tide; Revolution Watch).

Prices reported around the 2021 launch were US$2,150 in Revolution Watch’s coverage, €2,000 as the European public price reported by La Cote des Montres, and A$3,100 in Time+Tide’s Australian coverage. The strongest reason to buy is the complete collectible: a limited-run TAG Heuer with Mario details on the hardware and a distinctive activity interface. For a Nintendo collector or a TAG Heuer fan who values unusual collaborations, the physical design, two straps and dedicated presentation may matter more than raw smartwatch specifications.
The practical trade-offs are significant. The 45 mm case and 13.5 mm thickness will not suit every wrist. TAG Heuer’s stated normal-use battery life was about a day, and its sports-use claim was six hours under the GPS, heart-rate and music conditions listed above. As a 2021 connected device, software compatibility, app availability, update support and the condition of its aging battery deserve more attention than the original spec sheet. Do not assume battery replacement will be straightforward or economical; confirm service options directly with TAG Heuer before buying.
Scarcity and licensing contribute to its appeal, but “limited edition” does not make the electronics mechanically collectible or guarantee resale value. A newer TAG Heuer Connected may suit someone who prioritizes current software and support, but it will not necessarily include the Mario caseback, straps, packaging or complete themed interface. Check current models and support through TAG Heuer’s official site rather than assuming a newer watch is technically equivalent.

These are buyer-protection checks, not manufacturer-certified requirements. Ask the seller to demonstrate the watch rather than relying only on photographs or the claim that it is “new.”

- Clarify the sale terms. Get the return policy, authenticity assurances, warranty status and details of any old-stock claim in writing. For support, battery options and serviceability, ask TAG Heuer directly.
- Judge the price against condition. Evaluate a functioning, complete watch—not merely the presence of an original box—and do not use its 2021 launch price as proof of current value.
