It has the familiar shape and everyday mission of a compact crossover, but replaces gasoline with a quiet electric drive and a long EPA-estimated range. That makes it a sensible EV for routine driving—not a sporty or especially luxurious one.
What “average crossover” gets right
Here, average is a compliment. The Equinox EV is aimed at drivers who want a five-seat compact SUV for commuting, errands, passengers and ordinary cargo—not a rolling technology demonstration. Its conventional crossover layout and easygoing character make electric driving feel routine rather than requiring a new driving style.
It is not simply a gasoline Equinox with a battery in place of an engine. The EV uses GM’s Ultium-based electric architecture and has distinct packaging and mechanical hardware. The shared name signals a similar market role, not identical engineering; Car and Driver notes that the two Equinoxes have little in common mechanically.
In daily use, the appeal is straightforward: quiet low-speed running, smooth electric response, a familiar driving position and a comfort-oriented ride. It is designed to be stable and easygoing, not to reward aggressive cornering. MotorTrend described the AWD version as a “super cruiser” rather than a corner carver; that is a useful description of the vehicle’s priorities, not a verdict that every version is slow. The basic FWD configuration has about 213 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque, while the dual-motor AWD model is more powerful. MotorTrend’s AWD test supports the comfort-first reading.

Range is the headline advantage
The EPA-estimated range is 319 miles for FWD and 285 miles for AWD. Those are configuration-specific estimates, not promises for every trip. FWD is the range-maximizing choice; AWD gives buyers a second motor and added traction, with a 34-mile lower EPA estimate. NHTSA’s 2024 technical bulletin lists the two range figures, while Chevrolet’s specifications provide its range and charging claims.
Range changes with speed, temperature, terrain, wheels and tires, passenger load, and heating or air-conditioning use. A driver should not plan to use every advertised mile before charging, either: keeping a 10–15 percent reserve means the practical distance between stops is shorter than the full EPA number. That buffer is especially important when a route has sparse chargers or uncertain weather.
Independent testing shows why it helps to distinguish the common EPA comparison from a particular road test. MotorTrend recorded 241 miles in its AWD test, about 15 percent below the AWD EPA estimate. That result reflects its vehicle, route, conditions and method; it is evidence of possible highway-trip variation, not a prediction for every owner. MotorTrend’s test is useful context when deciding how much reserve to keep.

Charging: long legs, ordinary stop times
Chevrolet specifies standard 11.5-kW Level 2 AC charging and estimates up to 34 miles of range per hour on a suitable home or workplace charger. For DC fast charging, Chevrolet advertised up to 150 kW and about 70 miles added in 10 minutes under suitable conditions. The 150-kW figure is a peak acceptance rate, not a rate the car holds throughout a session; battery temperature, state of charge, charger capability and station performance all matter. Chevrolet’s charging figures should be read as conditional claims, not guaranteed stop times.
Recommended Free Tools
A more useful measure for a longer stop is average charging performance across a range of battery levels. Car and Driver measured an average of 94 kW from 10 to 90 percent in its test. Charging typically slows as the battery fills, so the peak number alone does not describe the time needed for a trip. Car and Driver’s test is one independent result, not a universal charging curve.
The trade-off is clear: a long-range starting battery can mean fewer stops, while a faster sustained charging rate can make each stop shorter. Occasional road-trippers may prefer fewer stops; people who regularly cover long highway distances should compare charging performance and reliable stations along their actual routes, not just maximum range.

Cabin, screens and driver assistance
The 2024 model is reported with an 11.0-inch driver display and a standard 17.7-inch infotainment screen. MotorTrend praised the large displays and the available Super Cruise system. Those screens give the cabin a modern focal point, but big displays alone do not establish how well a particular buyer’s phone, navigation and preferred apps will work. Confirm phone integration, navigation, wireless charging and feature availability on the exact trim and vehicle being considered.
Super Cruise is an available, trim- or package-dependent feature, not equipment on every Equinox EV. MotorTrend reported it as an approximately $2,100 option during its first-drive coverage; that is historical coverage, not a current quote. On compatible mapped roads and when its operating conditions are met, the system can assist with hands-free highway driving and automated lane changes. It is not autonomous: the driver remains responsible for monitoring the road. Check the vehicle’s equipment and the purchase-date terms before paying for it. MotorTrend’s first drive covers the feature and its availability at the time.
The compact-SUV format and five-seat layout suit everyday family use, but the available source material does not establish a complete, comparable cargo-measurement set or details such as child-seat fit, under-floor storage, towing capacity or roof-rack limits. Inspect the specific vehicle with the stroller, luggage or other bulky items you routinely carry, and check Chevrolet’s specifications for the configuration before relying on a capacity figure. Do not assume gasoline Equinox cargo measurements apply to the EV.

Price: the entry-price promise needs context
Chevrolet originally announced a $34,995 starting price for the 1LT. That is a historical announced base-price figure, not a guarantee of the price or availability of a vehicle a shopper can buy. Destination, options, dealer pricing, incentives and model-year changes affect the transaction. Chevrolet’s reveal announcement records the original figure. Edmunds lists an approximately $41,900 MSRP including destination on its 2024 model page, but the actual figure depends on trim and market context. Edmunds’ pricing page is a reference, not a current offer.
The value case is strongest in a lower, range-focused configuration. AWD, larger wheels, higher trims and options such as Super Cruise can raise the price and reduce the advantage of the entry-model promise. Compare the sticker and equipment of the actual car with similarly priced alternatives. Tax-credit eligibility is not an automatic discount: it depends on the vehicle, buyer, date and applicable rules, so verify current eligibility rather than subtracting an assumed incentive.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose FWD or AWD based on your roads
- FWD: The better fit if range, purchase price and straightforward commuting matter most. Its 319-mile EPA estimate is the higher of the two, and it is the clearest expression of the Equinox EV’s efficiency-first purpose.
- AWD: Worth considering if extra traction and power fit your climate and driving needs. Its EPA estimate is 285 miles, and the added traction does not replace appropriate tires or careful winter driving.
Do not assume every SUV needs AWD. Local weather, tire choice, winter tires, routes and driving habits matter. If you rarely face slippery roads, paying for AWD and accepting less rated range may not make sense.

Make charging access part of the purchase decision
The 11.5-kW Level 2 rating is most useful to buyers with dependable overnight or workplace charging. A home installation may require a 240-volt circuit and an electrical-panel assessment; whether it is straightforward depends on the property and existing service. Renters and apartment residents should confirm that a charger can be installed or that reliable charging is available nearby before committing. Public fast charging can work, but its convenience depends on station availability and reliability on the routes a driver actually uses.
The supplied model-year information does not establish every ownership detail, including portable charging-cord equipment, battery preconditioning controls, regenerative-braking settings, software-update policy, warranty terms or EV-service arrangements. Check the 2024 owner’s manual, warranty booklet and the vehicle’s window sticker for those specifics. Buyers should also verify current incentive rules and charging access rather than relying on launch-era claims.
How it compares with the alternatives
These vehicles compete for overlapping shoppers, but their strengths differ. The table is a qualitative comparison, not a claim that every trim has identical equipment or pricing.
| Alternative | Why consider it | Where the Equinox EV’s approach differs |
|---|---|---|
| Tesla Model Y | Charging ecosystem, performance, cargo utility and software experience. | Chevrolet’s crossover has a more conventional cabin character and may offer a lower entry-price position; compare actual trims and route charging. |
| Ford Mustang Mach-E | Sportier styling and stronger performance identity. | The Equinox EV prioritizes conventional family crossover duties over athletic character. |
| Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 | Distinctive design and faster-charging potential. | The Equinox EV leans on familiar compact-SUV packaging and Chevrolet’s dealer network. |
| Volkswagen ID.4 | A direct mainstream electric-SUV alternative with a comfort-focused mission. | The Equinox EV’s FWD EPA estimate is longer in the configurations cited here; compare specific trims and charging needs. |
| Nissan Ariya | Quiet ride, comfortable cabin and crossover proportions. | The Equinox EV’s maximum FWD range estimate is higher; some Ariya configurations may feel more premium inside. |
| Chevrolet Blazer EV | A larger, broader and more upscale Chevrolet EV range. | The Equinox EV is the more restrained-size, lower-price proposition; the Blazer EV offers more power and a larger-cabin position. |
Who should buy it?
- A strong fit: You can charge at home or work, want a quiet five-seat crossover, value range over the fastest charging, and prefer a familiar driving experience to a performance-focused EV.
- Look elsewhere or compare carefully: You regularly drive long highway days and want shorter charging stops, expect sharp handling or premium materials at upper-trim prices, need a larger vehicle or serious towing, or lack dependable charging access.
The Equinox EV is not compelling because it turns an ordinary commute into a thrill ride. Its point is that an electric compact crossover can feel normal: quiet, comfortable and capable of covering substantial daily distances. Whether that is enough depends on the real price of the trim you want, the roads you drive and where you can charge.
