Windows 365 Frontline is now called Windows 365 Flex. Microsoft’s current materials describe Flex as the Windows 365 option for intermittent or shared use, including shift workers, contractors and seasonal staff. The related Cloud Apps feature can publish selected Windows applications instead of a complete desktop. However, the much-discussed “smart TV app” is not a universal television application: Microsoft documents a Windows 365 web-client path on LG televisions running webOS 23, with significant limitations—and its edition matrix does not currently show LG TV support for Flex.
What Microsoft changed
Three related developments are easy to confuse:
- The name: Microsoft’s current FAQ identifies Flex as “formerly Frontline.” Older documentation and third-party articles may still use Windows 365 Frontline. See Microsoft’s Windows 365 FAQ.
- Shared access: Flex is designed to use Cloud PC capacity among workers who do not all need a personal desktop at the same time.
- Cloud Apps: administrators can publish selected applications through Windows 365 rather than giving every worker a complete Windows desktop.
Microsoft announced the Frontline update on November 18, 2025, and updated that announcement on June 18, 2026. The announcement is available on Microsoft Tech Community.
The rename is therefore not a separate replacement service. It is the current branding for the Frontline offer, while shared deployment and Cloud Apps are the more consequential functional changes.
What Windows 365 Flex is for
Flex targets workers who need Windows for a limited part of the day, week or year: shift workers, part-time staff, contractors, seasonal employees and people sharing a workstation. Microsoft contrasts it with Windows 365 Enterprise, where a user normally needs a dedicated, persistent Cloud PC available at any time. Flex can improve license utilization, but it does not make simultaneous access unlimited.

Flex does not mean that every employee can connect whenever they want regardless of capacity. A shift change can create a queue or an unavailable resource if the organization sized the pool only for average use instead of peak simultaneous sessions.
What Windows 365 Cloud Apps add
Cloud Apps are for task-based work where a complete desktop is unnecessary. Examples include Teams, Outlook, a scheduling system, inventory software or a custom line-of-business program that workers otherwise would not install on a tablet or shared endpoint.
Applications are managed through Microsoft Intune, including custom applications already packaged and managed there. Microsoft says Cloud Apps run on shared-mode Cloud PCs and require a Windows 365 Frontline/Flex Shared license. They are not simply a cheaper version of every Windows 365 subscription. There is no universal “number of apps per license” promised by Microsoft. Sizing depends on which applications can coexist in the same operating-system image, where users are located and the maximum number of applications running concurrently. Administrators should test application dependencies, sign-in behavior, printing and data persistence before rollout.

What the LG smart-TV support really is
Microsoft’s documented television route is a Windows 365 web client on an LG television running webOS 23:
- Open Home Office on the compatible LG TV.
- Select Windows 365.
- Sign in through the Windows 365 web client and open the assigned Cloud PC.
This is not evidence of a general Windows 365 app for Samsung Tizen, Roku, Fire TV or Google TV, and “LG” branding alone does not establish that every model supports the feature. Microsoft’s detailed access matrix lists LG WebOS for Windows 365 Business and Enterprise, but does not show a check mark for Windows 365 Flex. That apparent mismatch with broader “any device” marketing means an organization must confirm edition-specific support before buying hardware. Do not assume that a Flex Shared Cloud PC will work on an LG TV simply because Business or Enterprise does.

LG TV limitations
Microsoft lists these functions as unavailable on LG TV access:
- File transfer
- Clipboard
- Location redirection
- Collected error logs
- Hardware acceleration
- Keyboard shortcuts
Those restrictions can suit a display, kiosk, monitoring or light-interaction station, but they make ordinary office work harder. Most users will still need a keyboard and mouse; a television remote is not a practical substitute for Windows text entry and window management. Missing clipboard and file transfer also prevent common copy-and-move workflows. Microsoft does not establish a universal resolution, refresh-rate, latency or peripheral guarantee, so test the exact television model and accessories.

Microsoft recommends Windows App for Windows 365 connections. It supports Windows, macOS, iOS/iPadOS, Android/Chrome OS and supported web browsers; Meta Quest support is listed as preview. Users need a work or school account assigned a Cloud PC or published app. Personal Microsoft accounts cannot sign in to Windows App for these business resources. The Windows Remote Desktop client for Windows MSI reached end of support on March 27, 2026. The Microsoft Store Remote Desktop app stopped being supported and available for download on May 27, 2025. Organizations still using those clients should already have moved to Windows App rather than starting a new deployment on the legacy software.

Do not multiply a headline per-license figure by total headcount and assume that is the project cost. Microsoft’s Flex page displayed configurations at 42, 99 and 185 per license per month in the retrieved page view, but the currency was not clear enough to present those as U.S. dollars. Prices exclude tax and vary by region and dedicated/shared terms; use the page’s locale and a Microsoft sales quote before budgeting.
A proper model includes:
- Peak simultaneous users, not just the number of employees.
- Flex Dedicated versus Flex Shared licensing.
- Whether Cloud Apps are needed and which applications run together.
- Existing Microsoft Intune, Microsoft Entra and security entitlements.
- Cloud PC CPU, memory and storage requirements.
- Application packaging, support, endpoint hardware and implementation work.
Microsoft’s contact-sales route is appropriate when regional pricing or licensing interpretation is unclear.

Administration and session requirements
Windows 365 Cloud PCs are provisioned and managed through Microsoft Intune, with identity assignment through Microsoft Entra. An administrator should have:
- An appropriate Windows 365 subscription and edition.
- Entra identities and group assignments for every user.
- Intune enrollment, configuration policies and application packaging.
- Network access to Microsoft’s required endpoints.
- A tested Windows image and compatible line-of-business applications.
- Rules for sign-out, automatic lock, abandoned sessions and unsaved work.
- Data-protection policies covering clipboard, file transfer and local peripherals.
In a shared deployment, the next user’s experience depends on the previous session ending and on the organization’s policies. Decide what data persists, where applications are installed, what happens to unsaved work, how quickly a resource is reassigned and what users see when every pooled Cloud PC is occupied. Do not promise a particular recovery behavior without testing the configured environment.
When Flex is a good or poor fit
Good fit
- Scheduled shifts have predictable but non-overlapping demand.
- Workers can use centrally managed applications and a standard Windows image.
- The organization wants fewer physical PCs at desks, kiosks or shared stations.
- Task-based users need one or two Windows-only applications.
- The IT team already operates Intune and Entra.
Poor fit
- Every employee needs an always-available personal desktop.
- Work depends on offline access, specialized GPUs, USB devices, scanners, serial ports, cameras or very low latency.
- Users regularly transfer files or copy between a local device and the Cloud PC.
- Peak shifts could exhaust pooled capacity.
- The organization needs a full desktop from a television but cannot verify Flex TV compatibility.
Deployment checklist
- Confirm whether Microsoft’s current name and license are Flex Dedicated or Flex Shared.
- Choose a full Cloud PC or selected Cloud Apps for the actual job.
- Model maximum concurrent sessions, including shift-change overlap.
- Test every line-of-business application and its identity, printing and storage dependencies.
- Verify Entra, Intune, image and network prerequisites.
- For television use, confirm the exact LG model and webOS version, then provide a keyboard and mouse.
- Test sign-out, automatic session handling, unsaved work and capacity exhaustion during a real shift change.
- Document clipboard and file-transfer restrictions for users and support staff.
Alternatives worth considering
Windows 365 Business may suit smaller organizations seeking a simpler Cloud PC model. Windows 365 Enterprise is the more natural choice for dedicated, persistent desktops. Azure Virtual Desktop offers more control over host pools, images and Azure architecture, but generally requires more design and administration. Physical thin clients or managed PCs remain preferable where local peripherals, predictable performance or offline resilience matter most.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Windows 365 Frontline is now Windows 365 Flex. Flex Shared improves the economics of intermittent access, while Cloud Apps can deliver individual Windows programs to frontline workers. LG webOS 23 access is a narrow web-client scenario—not a universal smart-TV app—and Microsoft’s matrix does not currently confirm it for Flex. Validate licensing, peak concurrency, applications and the exact endpoint before deployment.
