Yes. Spotify’s DJ can now take spoken or typed requests and reshape a personalized listening session. The capability is not a brand-new August 2026 launch: Spotify announced voice requests on May 13, 2025, initially for Premium listeners in more than 60 markets. By 2026, Spotify had added text input, suggested prompts, more markets and more languages. DJ is still a beta feature, remains Premium-only, and is designed to steer a mix—not guarantee that every exact song you name plays immediately.
What Spotify DJ requests actually do
Spotify’s original DJ created a personalized sequence of songs with spoken commentary. A request adds listener direction: you can describe a genre, mood, artist, activity or discovery goal, and DJ updates the session around that instruction. Spotify describes this as a personalized listening session rather than a conventional voice-controlled jukebox.
Spotify announced voice requests on May 13, 2025. The current experience also supports typing and personalized suggestions, according to Spotify’s support documentation.
“AI DJ” is common shorthand; Spotify generally labels the product DJ or DJ (beta). Spotify says it combines AI with the work of its global editorial experts. It selects and sequences licensed Spotify content and provides commentary; it is not documented as a tool that generates new music, and Spotify has not specified every underlying model in these announcements.

How to make a voice or text request
- Open the Spotify mobile app.
- On Home, select the DJ card or dedicated DJ button. If it is not visible, open Search and search for DJ.
- Start the DJ session.
- Tap the DJ button in the Now Playing view.
- Type in the request field, tap the microphone to speak, or choose a suggested personalized request.
- Wait for DJ to update the session. Tap the DJ control again whenever you want to change direction.
Spotify’s January 2026 update made DJ easier to find from Home and added a dedicated entry point for text or voice requests. The exact placement can change as Spotify tests its mobile interface.
Prompts Spotify has used
- “Surprise me with some indie tracks I’ve never heard before.”
- “Give me some electronic beats for a midday run.”
- “Play me some cry-in-the-car songs.”
- “Upbeat hits for a workout.”
- “Tracks like my top songs from 2025.”
- “Start a session with new releases for my Sunday.”
You can also try a clearly labeled combination such as “late-night jazz for reading” or “90s alternative without the biggest hits.” Adding an activity, era, mood or discovery preference gives DJ more direction than naming only a broad genre.
Will DJ play the exact song you request?
Not necessarily. Spotify’s official descriptions say a request steers or updates a personalized session. They do not promise that saying “play [exact song]” will make that track play immediately every time. If precise playback is the priority, use Spotify’s normal search, queue and voice-assistant controls; use DJ when you want a curated sequence that responds to your taste.

- Alexa can show you more - Echo Show 5 includes a 5.5” display so you can see news and weather at a glance, make video calls, view compatible cameras, stream music and shows, and more.
- Small size, bigger sound – Stream your favorite music, shows, podcasts, and more from providers like Amazon Music, Spotify, and Prime Video—now with deeper bass and clearer vocals. Includes a 5.5" display so you can view shows, song titles, and more at a glance.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart devices like lights and thermostats, even while you're away.
- See more with the built-in camera – Check in on your family, pets, and more using the built-in camera. Drop in on your home when you're out or view the front door from your Echo Show 5 with compatible video doorbells.
- See your photos on display – When not in use, set the background to a rotating slideshow of your favorite photos. Invite family and friends to share photos to your Echo Show. Prime members also get unlimited cloud photo storage.
Results also depend on your listening history and Spotify’s interpretation of the request. A request for unfamiliar music may still include recognizable artists, while a broad mood request can produce a familiar mix. Tap DJ again and refine it with instructions such as “more upbeat,” “less familiar,” “more 1980s” or “similar to this artist.”
Who gets DJ requests?
Spotify’s support page labels DJ “For: Premium.” The original request rollout covered Premium users in more than 60 markets where DJ was available. Spotify reported that DJ had expanded to more than 75 markets as of May 7, 2026, but it is not available in every country or on every account.
Spotify launched DJ in the United States and Canada on February 22, 2023, initially for Premium users. A Premium subscription does not guarantee that the feature has reached your account: country, rollout status, app version and supported language all matter. Keep Spotify updated; Spotify has not published one universal minimum iOS or Android version for DJ.

Supported languages and changing the DJ voice
Spotify’s support material lists English DJ X and Spanish (Mexico) DJ Livi, while noting that DJ is available in a limited number of languages. In May 2026, Spotify announced four additional DJ languages and personas:
Recommended Free Tools
| Language | Persona |
|---|---|
| French | Maïa |
| German | Ben |
| Italian | Alex |
| Brazilian Portuguese | Dani |
To change it, open DJ and select the three-dot menu—horizontal dots on iOS or vertical dots on Android—then choose DJ language. The menu shows only languages supported for your account and market.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
What changed after the 2025 launch?
- Text requests: You can type instead of speaking, which is useful in quiet environments or when microphone input is inconvenient.
- Suggested requests: Spotify can present personalized prompts to start or redirect a session.
- Broader rollout: Spotify reported more than 75 markets by May 7, 2026, with four additional languages.
- Conversational experiments: In April 2026, Spotify began rolling out a separate beta experience in English to Premium users aged 18 and over in the United States, Ireland and Sweden. It can answer some music questions and offer recommendations, but Spotify says responses may be incomplete or inaccurate. This is related to DJ, not proof that every DJ account has a general-purpose music chatbot.
Do not confuse DJ with Spotify’s Prompted Playlists or other discovery tools. They may use related personalization technology, but they are separate features with different controls.

DJ does not appear
- Confirm the account is Premium.
- Update Spotify from your device’s app store.
- Search for DJ in Spotify’s Search tab.
- Check Home for the DJ card or dedicated button.
- Verify that the account’s country is one where DJ has rolled out.
- If those checks fail, sign out and back in; reinstalling is a last-resort device troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed Spotify-specific fix.
The microphone button is missing
- Use the text field if it is available.
- Update the app and reopen DJ.
- Check Spotify’s microphone permission in your phone settings.
- Consider that voice support or a particular language may not yet be enabled for your account or market.
DJ misunderstands the request
Use flexible, specific language: combine a mood or activity with genre, era, artist or discovery intent. Ask for “more upbeat,” “less familiar” or “similar to” a style, then submit the request again. Exact-song wording should be treated as a preference, not a guaranteed command.
Your language is unavailable
Only rollout-supported options appear in DJ language. A language added in one country is not automatically available worldwide.

Is Premium worth it for DJ?
DJ is most useful if you already use Spotify and want hands-free discovery while driving, exercising, cooking or hosting. It can redirect an ongoing session without requiring you to build a new playlist, and text input works when speaking is impractical.
It is a poor reason to subscribe by itself if you need exact voice-controlled playback, uninterrupted music without spoken commentary, or access in a country where DJ has not rolled out. The feature is beta, its behavior can change, and its recommendations depend on the quality of your Spotify taste profile.
Before subscribing, check the in-app DJ entry point and your country’s availability. Spotify’s official support page remains the authoritative place to confirm whether your account is eligible.
