Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose the format first: type 3/8 for plain text, paste a character such as ⅜ for a compact inline symbol, or use an equation editor for a numerator above a denominator. There is no universal fraction key; the best choice depends on the app and whether the result must remain editable and mathematically structured.
The three ways to type a fraction
| Format | Example | Best for | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slash notation | 3/8 |
Email, messages, forms, file names, code, searchable text and spreadsheet values | Not visually typeset; some apps may interpret it as a date or calculation |
| Unicode fraction character | ⅜ |
Short prose, labels, menus and measurements | Only some fractions have precomposed characters; appearance depends on the font |
| Built-up equation | numerator over denominator | Homework, textbooks, scientific and technical documents, and algebra | Needs an equation editor and may not work in plain-text fields |
For ordinary text, type the numerator, press /, then type the denominator. Use parentheses when either part has more than one term: (a+b)/(c+d), x/(y-1), or (2x+3)/(4x-5). This is clearer and more portable than forcing an unusual fraction into one character.
A Unicode glyph such as ⅜ is one text character, not a live mathematical object. It may not align with nearby equations, resize gracefully, or remain easy to edit. For a complex expression, use a structured equation.
Microsoft Word
Let Word convert common fractions
In supported Word environments, including Microsoft 365, Word 2024, Word 2021, Word 2019 and Word 2016, typing 1/2, 1/4 or 3/4 may automatically produce ½, ¼ or ¾. Microsoft documents these three conversions; entries such as 1/3 and 2/5 generally do not convert the same way. Behavior depends on AutoFormat as You Type settings and the particular installation. See Microsoft’s Word symbol guidance.

- FULL-SIZED CONVENIENCE: The standard QWERTY layout of this keyboard set offers a familiar typing experience, ideal for both professional tasks and personal use.
If Word changes something unintentionally, press Undo immediately. This matters for dates, recipes and measurements that happen to contain slash-separated numbers. If the conversion keeps recurring, adjust the relevant AutoFormat option or enter the text in a form that should not be converted.
Insert a single fraction symbol
- Place the cursor in the document.
- Select Insert > Symbol > More Symbols.
- Open the Subset menu and choose Number Forms.
- Double-click the fraction, then select Close.
If Number Forms is missing or the character is blank, try another font. Fonts do not all contain the same Unicode glyphs, as Microsoft notes in its symbol instructions. This inserts a static character, not a structured equation.
Create a stacked fraction with Word’s equation editor
On Windows, press Alt+= to open an equation region. Type a UnicodeMath expression such as a/(b+c), then press Space (or use Convert > Professional) to build the fraction. For a simple value, enter 3/8. Microsoft documents this linear-format workflow at Linear format equations using UnicodeMath and LaTeX in Word.
Word also supports LaTeX input in documented Word versions and equation contexts. Enter frac{3}{8} or frac{x+1}{2x-3}, then press Space to convert it. This is Word-specific and version-dependent; do not assume the same LaTeX command works in every Office application.

On Mac, Microsoft’s Math AutoCorrect guidance lists Ctrl+= for starting an equation. The exact result can vary with Word version, keyboard layout and whether the cursor is already inside an equation. If it fails, use Insert > Equation and select a fraction template. Math AutoCorrect commands are case-sensitive and require a terminating delimiter; see Microsoft’s Math AutoCorrect guide.
Google Docs
Insert an equation on a computer
- Open the document and place the cursor.
- Select Insert > Equation.
- Use the equation toolbar’s mathematical-symbol menus to insert a fraction structure.
- Enter the numerator and denominator in their respective boxes.
Google’s documented equation tools include menus for Greek letters, operations, relations, operators and arrows. Inside an equation, some symbols can be entered by typing a backslash, the symbol name and a space; Google also documents backslash-based superscript and subscript shortcuts. The official help page does not establish a universal frac workflow, so use the toolbar rather than assuming all LaTeX commands work: Google Docs equation instructions.
The documented workflow is presented for computer use. In the mobile apps, the dependable choices are 3/8, a copied Unicode character, or editing the document later on a computer.
Windows methods outside Word
Copy and paste
For an occasional inline symbol, copy one from the table below or from a trusted document. This avoids guessing whether a numeric shortcut is supported.

Character Map
Windows Character Map can search for and copy fraction symbols. Its interface and search behavior differ across Windows releases, so treat it as a fallback rather than a guaranteed primary method.
Unicode entry and Alt codes
A Unicode code point identifies a character, such as U+00BD for ½. A Windows Alt-code sequence is an input method whose behavior depends on the application, keyboard, layout, keypad and code page. It is not a universal fraction shortcut. If an entry method fails, paste the character or use 1/2.
Mac methods
Character Viewer
Open the macOS character picker, search for fraction, one half or one quarter, and insert the result. This is more reliable than promising one keyboard combination across every macOS release, keyboard layout and app.
Text replacements
For repeated use, create replacements such as ;half → ½, ;quarter → ¼ and ;threequarters → ¾. The exact settings label varies by macOS version, so look for the system text-replacement feature.

- Type the portable form, such as
3/8. - Copy and paste a Unicode symbol when one exists.
- Create a custom keyboard text replacement for frequent entries, for example
/half→½or/third→⅓. - When a true stacked fraction is required, open the document in a desktop equation editor.
Keyboard features and settings paths differ by operating-system version, language and keyboard app, so there is no single mobile fraction key to recommend.

These are precomposed Unicode characters. Unicode’s Number Forms chart lists the characters, but the receiving font and application still determine whether they render correctly: Unicode Number Forms chart.
| Fraction | Character | Unicode |
|---|---|---|
| one quarter | ¼ | U+00BC |
| one half | ½ | U+00BD |
| three quarters | ¾ | U+00BE |

Fractions in Excel and Google Sheets
A spreadsheet may interpret 1/2 as a date, a division expression, a fraction-formatted number or literal text. Decide whether the cell should calculate or merely display characters.
- Calculable value: enter the value according to the spreadsheet’s numeric and locale rules, then apply a fraction number format.
- Literal text: enter text explicitly, often by prefixing it with an apostrophe:
'1/2. The apostrophe normally remains hidden while preventing unwanted conversion. - Display-only symbol: paste a Unicode character such as
½, recognizing that it is text rather than a numeric value.
Exact menus and parsing rules vary between Excel, Google Sheets and regional settings. Check the cell’s resulting value and format before relying on a slash entry in calculations.
Fractions in HTML and web content
For common symbols, HTML entities such as ½, ¼ and ¾ can produce ½, ¼ and ¾ where the publishing system permits entities. Ordinary text can remain 3/8. For unusual or complex fractions, use MathML or the equation renderer supported by the site rather than manually combining superscript and subscript characters; support depends on the platform.
Why a fraction is not formatting correctly
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| A symbol is missing or appears as a box | The font or receiving app lacks the glyph | Change font, paste a more common character, or use slash notation/equation markup |
Word does not convert 1/2 |
AutoFormat is disabled or the context differs | Use Symbol insertion or an equation region |
| An equation command does nothing | The cursor is outside an equation, syntax is unsupported, or no terminating Space/Enter was pressed | Open an equation first, verify syntax and press the delimiter |
| A slash entry becomes a date | Automatic date or numeric parsing | Undo, format the cell as text, use an apostrophe, or apply a fraction number format |
| A hand-formatted fraction looks uneven | Superscript and subscript do not create a real fraction structure | Use an equation editor or fraction template |
| A mobile app lacks equation controls | The app exposes fewer editing tools than its desktop counterpart | Use plain text/copy-paste, then finish the equation on a computer |
A single glyph may also be announced differently from a structured numerator-over-denominator expression by assistive technology. For formal educational, scientific or accessibility-sensitive documents, prefer a structured equation; for broad compatibility, slash notation is usually safest.
Quick Recap
Which method should you use?
| Your goal | Recommended method |
|---|---|
| Works in almost any field | 3/8 |
| Short prose or a measurement | ½, ¼ or another supported Unicode glyph |
| Unusual standalone fraction | Slash notation, or a copied Unicode character if one exists |
| Algebra, variables or parentheses | Equation editor |
| School, scientific or technical layout | Built-up equation with a fraction template |
| Repeated personal entries | Text replacement or app-specific AutoCorrect |
| Spreadsheet calculation | Numeric value plus fraction number formatting |
| Literal spreadsheet text | Text entry, often with an apostrophe |
| Mobile typing | Plain text or copied symbol |
