The warning came after fake profiles appeared following his return to India on March 1, and it urged users not to follow accounts impersonating him or another IAF air warrior.
What the IAF announced
The IAF’s clarification was a historical statement issued on Wednesday, March 6, 2019—not a newly verified announcement in 2026. Reporting at the time quoted the Air Force as saying that Abhinandan did not have a social-media account on any platform. It specifically referenced Facebook, Instagram and Twitter (now known as X).
The IAF warned that fake accounts using an air warrior’s identity could spread misinformation. The warning followed Abhinandan’s capture during the 2019 India-Pakistan crisis, his release from Pakistani custody and his return to India on March 1.

@IAFAbhinandanV@abhinandanhere@_Pilotiaf@WC_Abhinandan@AbhiNandan_Wcdr@W_abhinandan
This was a list of handles identified publicly by the IAF at the time, not a guarantee that every impersonation account online had been catalogued. The handles should not be treated as current account-status information: usernames can be renamed, suspended, deleted or later reassigned.

Why impersonation accounts attracted followers
Abhinandan became the focus of intense public attention after his capture and release. Reports said some profiles used his name, photographs and biographical details, while rapid follower growth made them look more credible. One contemporaneous report also carried allegations that accounts were being used for propaganda; that allegation should not be confused with the IAF’s directly reported warning about misinformation. See MyNation’s contemporaneous account for that attributed context.
Malware and misinformation risks
The Air Force warning was not proof that every listed profile carried malicious software. The reported wording was that fake accounts may contain malware and could be used to spread false information, as reproduced by Business Standard.

- Do not click links or download files posted by an unauthenticated profile.
- Do not repost claims simply because an account uses a uniform photograph, rank or a large follower count.
- Never send money or personal information to a profile claiming to represent Abhinandan.
- Report suspected impersonation through the platform’s reporting tools instead of amplifying it.
How to assess a profile claiming to be Abhinandan
- Check official confirmation. Look for a link or confirmation from the IAF’s verified communication channels rather than relying on the profile’s own description.
- Seek independent confirmation. A claim appearing only on a newly created account is weak evidence.
- Inspect the account history. Recent creation, copied images, inconsistent spelling and sudden political messaging are warning signs.
- Treat badges cautiously. Verification systems and platform policies change, so a badge alone is not conclusive.
- Distinguish page types. Fan, tribute and parody pages may use Abhinandan’s name without claiming to be his official account; impersonation is different.
A government- or media-published photograph does not authenticate every profile that reuses it. Likewise, a private or undisclosed online account would not be established or ruled out by the IAF’s public 2019 statement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the 2019 warning does—and does not—prove
| Established by the contemporaneous reports | Not established by that warning alone |
|---|---|
| The IAF publicly said on March 6, 2019, that Abhinandan had no social-media account. | Whether he opened, used or stopped using any account after March 6, 2019. |
| The IAF identified six Twitter handles as fake and warned about misinformation. | That every account using his name was operated by one person or organisation. |
| The IAF warned that such accounts might contain malware. | That malware was found on every listed profile. |
| Some handles were reported as suspended, unavailable or disappearing at the time of publication. | The present status, ownership or safety of any account bearing those usernames. |
Therefore, the evidence supports a dated historical conclusion: on March 6, 2019, the IAF said Abhinandan had no social-media account and advised the public to avoid purported profiles. It does not establish his social-media status in 2026. For any current claim, rely on a fresh confirmation through official IAF channels and treat unverified profiles as unauthenticated.
