On January 16, 2025, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully docked two spacecraft in low-Earth orbit. The SpaDeX mission made India the fourth country officially credited with demonstrating autonomous space docking, after the United States, Russia/the former Soviet Union, and China. The mission also went beyond a one-time connection: the spacecraft later undocked, docked again, and demonstrated two-way power transfer.
What India actually achieved
SpaDeX (Space Docking Experiment) launched two small spacecraft—SDX01, the “Chaser,” and SDX02, the “Target”—together on a PSLV-C60 rocket from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, on December 30, 2024. Once in orbit, SDX01 used relative navigation and controlled manoeuvres to approach SDX02, align its docking interface, make contact, capture the target and control the joined spacecraft as one object. This was a rendezvous-and-docking demonstration, not simply two satellites passing close to each other. ISRO mission overview
ISRO subsequently separated the spacecraft on March 13, 2025, in an approximately 460-kilometre circular orbit inclined by 45 degrees. On April 20, the spacecraft docked for a second time, and on April 21 ISRO demonstrated power transfer in both directions across the connection. Those follow-on operations tested whether the vehicles could remain safe and functional through repeated docking-related procedures. Undocking details · Second docking and power transfer

Why docking in space is difficult
Two spacecraft orbit Earth at several kilometres per second. The relevant challenge is their relative motion: before contact, the chaser must reduce closing speed to a very small value while continuously estimating the target’s position, velocity, attitude and rotation.
- Navigation: Cameras, sensors and onboard software must determine where the target is and how it is moving despite measurement uncertainty.
- Guidance and control: Thrusters must execute carefully timed burns while conserving limited propellant.
- Alignment: The docking interfaces have to meet within tight positional and angular tolerances.
- Contact dynamics: The impact must be absorbed without causing rebound, tumbling or structural damage.
- Post-capture stability: Once connected, the combined vehicles must remain mechanically, electrically and dynamically controlled.
Lighting conditions, communications gaps, orbital geometry and changing sensor data add further constraints. SpaDeX’s postponed January approaches illustrate why docking missions use hold points and additional analysis instead of forcing a scheduled manoeuvre when relative drift is not as expected. What “autonomous” means in SpaDeX
Autonomous docking does not mean that people were absent from the operation. Ground teams planned the sequence, monitored telemetry, approved manoeuvres and applied flight rules. The spacecraft nevertheless demonstrated onboard relative navigation and automated guidance, control and capture during the close approach. This distinction matters: autonomy reduces the need for continuous manual piloting, but it operates inside a mission architecture designed and supervised from the ground. Why India is called the fourth country
The Government of India and ISRO use “fourth country” to describe national programmes that have demonstrated the relevant docking capability with their own spacecraft. The usual ordering is:

A precise statement is that India became the fourth country officially credited with demonstrating space docking, after the United States, Russia/the former Soviet Union and China. It does not mean that only four countries or organisations have ever had spacecraft attached in orbit. European and Japanese spacecraft, for example, have participated in orbital attachment operations using established infrastructure and mechanisms. Government confirmation · PIB release
Docking is not the same as berthing
In docking, the arriving spacecraft actively manoeuvres into a compatible interface, where capture and mechanical latching connect the vehicles. In berthing, a robotic arm or another external system captures a vehicle and moves it to an attachment port. Both can be useful, but their navigation, control, mechanical and operational requirements differ. Therefore, an attachment to the International Space Station should not automatically be counted as evidence that the visiting country demonstrated the same autonomous docking capability.

What SpaDeX enables next
ISRO describes docking as foundational technology rather than an end in itself. Demonstrated rendezvous, docking, undocking, post-docking control and power transfer can support:
- Joining separately launched spacecraft or modules to complete a larger mission.
- Assembly and operation of the proposed Bharatiya Antariksh Station.
- Crew-transfer and logistics operations associated with an orbital station.
- Multi-launch lunar sample-return architectures that require orbital assembly or transfer.
- Future in-orbit servicing, inspection or spacecraft-control missions.
The capability is relevant to Gaganyaan and India’s longer-term human-spaceflight plans, but it is not a crewed mission. Human-rated docking also requires life-support integration, crew procedures, launch-abort systems, re-entry capability and extensive qualification. ISRO’s stated applications · ISRO programme context

What the achievement does not prove
- It does not demonstrate human-rated docking or regular crew and cargo transport.
- It does not mean that a Bharatiya Antariksh Station module is already operating or that its schedule is guaranteed.
- It does not establish an operational satellite-repair, refuelling or commercial servicing business.
- It does not prove compatibility with every foreign docking standard.
- It does not by itself show that India is immediately ready for a lunar sample-return mission.
Those goals require additional spacecraft, launch, communications, robotics, safety, thermal, power and mission-operations systems.
The engineering risks docking missions must manage
A close-approach sequence is designed around safe aborts and conservative limits. Potential failure modes include unexpected relative drift, uncertain navigation, loss of communications during a visibility gap, excessive closing speed, interface misalignment, failed latching, contact-induced oscillation or tumbling, and depleted propellant after repeated corrections. Once joined, power, thermal and communications behaviour also has to be monitored. SpaDeX’s delayed January attempts show that identifying and resolving an unexpected trend is part of successful flight operations, not evidence that the mission was merely routine.
Why this is a foundational milestone
SpaDeX gives India a demonstrated building block for missions that cannot be completed by one spacecraft launched as a single unit. It combines precision rendezvous, autonomous close-range control, mechanical capture, safe separation and power transfer in one programme. That is a significant national technology milestone, while still being one prerequisite among many for a crewed orbital programme, a station and advanced lunar missions.
