Kamat received a second one-year extension as Secretary of the Department of Defence Research and Development (DDR&D) and Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, the extension ran from June 1, 2025, to May 31, 2026, or until further orders. Kamat is no longer DRDO chairman: after his extended tenure ended, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh was given additional charge of both posts.
The decision in brief
The May 2025 decision kept Kamat in charge of DRDO and the DDR&D department for one additional year beyond his first extension. The reported order covered the period from June 1, 2025, through May 31, 2026, with the condition “or until further orders.” That wording allowed the government to end the arrangement earlier through a subsequent order; it did not create an indefinite appointment.
Contemporaneous reporting identified the approving authority as the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. The extension was reported on May 26, 2025, and is recorded in DRDO’s newspaper-clipping archive (The Tribune report; DRDO archive).
Why the extension mattered
The decision provided leadership continuity while DRDO faced pressure to deliver defence technology faster, improve project accountability and deepen cooperation with Indian industry and universities. Reports at the time linked the extension to the organisation’s broader reform agenda, although the cited announcement did not publish a detailed explanation of the government’s reasons.

During Kamat’s tenure, DRDO materials and reporting highlighted priorities including quantum technologies, stealth unmanned systems, electromagnetic aircraft-launch technology, electric propulsion and space-based intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. These were areas being pursued during his tenure, not proof that every listed reform or technology outcome had already been completed.
The practical significance was therefore continuity rather than a formal guarantee of policy success: Kamat remained responsible for implementing and managing the agenda while the government continued to assess DRDO’s structure, partnerships and delivery performance.

Kamat’s appointment and background
Kamat became Secretary DDR&D and DRDO Chairman on August 25, 2022. Before taking the top post, he was Director General, Naval Systems and Materials, DRDO. A government profile records that he joined DRDO in 1989, earned a B.Tech in Metallurgical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur in 1985 and later completed a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering at Ohio State University. The first extension should not be confused with the second: the May 2024 PIB release concerns service through May 31, 2025, while the May 2025 decision concerns the following year.

What happened after Kamat’s term ended
Following the end of Kamat’s extended tenure on May 31, 2026, Rajesh Kumar Singh was assigned additional charge of Secretary DDR&D and Chairman DRDO. DRDO’s transition archive and its current organisational listing identify Singh in that additional-charge capacity (transition archive; DRDO Who’s Who).
“Additional charge” is not the same as a confirmed permanent appointment. The available listing establishes who was handling the responsibilities, but it does not by itself state how long that interim arrangement would last or whether it represented the government’s final succession decision.

What the extension does—and does not—show
- It shows: the government chose to retain Kamat for a second additional year in both of his linked leadership roles.
- It does not by itself show: that every DRDO reform target was achieved, that the extension was a public performance award, or that a particular technology programme succeeded because of the decision.
- It should not be read as: an open-ended tenure. The reported “until further orders” clause preserved the government’s ability to change the arrangement.
The most accurate reading is that the extension maintained institutional continuity during an active reform and technology-delivery period. Its historical importance can be assessed separately from the measurable results of individual DRDO projects.
