There is no single best CCTV camera for every Kenyan property. A TP-Link Tapo or EZVIZ Wi-Fi camera is usually the simplest choice for one or two rooms. A wired PoE system from Hikvision, Dahua or Uniview is more dependable for a shop, office, compound or school. Solar and 4G cameras solve difficult power or broadband conditions, but add battery, signal and data costs.
The right purchase depends on the area to cover, night-lighting, power reliability, internet access, required recording period, installation budget and the quality of local support. This guide separates those choices, gives indicative Kenyan prices reported in August 2026, and shows what to demand in a quotation.
Quick picks by use case
| Need | Best-fit category | Brands or lines to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| One inexpensive indoor camera | Wi-Fi camera with microSD recording | TP-Link Tapo or EZVIZ |
| Outdoor home coverage | Weather-resistant Wi-Fi or PoE camera | EZVIZ, Tapo, Hikvision or Dahua |
| Reliable whole-property recording | Wired PoE cameras with an NVR | Hikvision, Dahua or Uniview |
| Small shop or office | Professionally installed four-camera DVR/NVR kit | Hikvision or Dahua |
| Remote farm or weak fixed internet | Solar, battery or 4G/LTE camera | Reolink, Tapo, Hikvision or Dahua |
| Best night identification | Low-light or full-colour camera plus controlled lighting | Hikvision ColorVu or Dahua full-colour families |
| Large commercial site | NVR/VMS with analytics, retention planning and professional installation | Hikvision, Dahua or Uniview |
| Privacy-conscious setup | Local microSD or NVR storage, strong account security and minimal cloud use | Any exact model meeting those requirements |
Hikvision and Dahua are widely encountered in Kenyan professional quotations, while Tapo and EZVIZ are aimed at easier consumer installations. That is a market-availability observation, not an independent laboratory ranking. Current Kenyan comparison coverage supports treating them as leading categories rather than naming one universal winner.
Choose the camera type before choosing a brand
Wi-Fi cameras
Wi-Fi suits apartments, rented homes and one- or two-camera installations where running Ethernet is impractical. Setup is quick and smartphone viewing is convenient. The camera still normally needs mains or USB power: “wireless” usually describes data, not electricity.

- Recording and alerts can stop when the router or power fails.
- Concrete walls, metal gates and multiple floors can make outdoor signal weaker than expected.
- Poorly protected accounts create avoidable security risk.
- Test signal strength at the intended mounting point, not beside the router.
TP-Link’s catalogue separates indoor, outdoor, floodlight, battery and solar products and shows models offering local and cloud storage: TP-Link security cameras.
Wired PoE IP cameras
Power over Ethernet (PoE) carries power and data over one Ethernet cable. An NVR can record several cameras centrally, making this the dependable default for shops, compounds, offices, schools and warehouses.
- Less dependent on Wi-Fi and better suited to continuous recording.
- Requires cable routes, conduit and a PoE NVR or switch.
- Bad terminations, exposed connectors and no backup power cause many “camera” faults.
HD-over-coaxial DVR cameras
HD-over-coax is sensible when a property already has usable coaxial cable and a compatible DVR. It can be inexpensive for a basic kit, but future upgrades and interoperability are usually less flexible than IP. Confirm camera, DVR, power-supply and remote-access compatibility before reusing old cable.
Solar, battery and 4G cameras
These are useful at gates, farms, construction sites and remote compounds without dependable mains or fixed broadband. Battery life changes with night length, motion frequency, temperature and signal quality; solar panels need an unobstructed, correctly oriented position. A 4G camera also needs a SIM, coverage and recurring data. Local recording may continue during an internet outage, while remote viewing and cloud alerts do not.

Brands worth comparing in Kenya
Hikvision
Hikvision covers entry-level cameras, PoE, DVR/NVR, low-light ColorVu and analytics such as AcuSense. It is a practical shortlist for professionally installed homes, shops, schools and institutions when a local installer can provide support. Product families, firmware and official versus grey-import status vary, so insist on the exact model, warranty and administrator ownership. AcuSense is manufacturer-described technology intended to filter human and vehicle events; its brochure is not independent accuracy testing: Hikvision AcuSense brochure.
Dahua
Dahua is a close professional competitor with broad wired, AI and low-light ranges. Choose it when the exact model, installer expertise, replacement stock and quotation are stronger. “AI” features differ by series; verify each camera-recorder combination rather than assuming every model has identical analytics. Product information is available at Dahua.
EZVIZ
EZVIZ is designed around standalone Wi-Fi cameras, app control and simple home deployment. It is a poor substitute for a central NVR on a large compound or a site requiring long retention. Check whether the selected model supports microSD, optional cloud storage and Kenyan warranty terms. See the official EZVIZ site.
TP-Link Tapo
Tapo offers consumer Wi-Fi products across indoor, outdoor, battery and solar categories, with selected models supporting 2K, 3K or 4K video, person/pet/vehicle detection and local or cloud storage. Regional model names and support differ, so confirm that the exact model is sold in Kenya. The catalogue is not a Kenyan price list: Tapo catalogue.

Uniview
Uniview is a credible mid- to high-end NVR alternative for businesses. It may be less familiar to consumers and less consistently stocked than Hikvision or Dahua; verify city-level support and spare parts.
Reolink and Eufy
Reolink is attractive for standalone, solar, battery and 4G installations. Its Argus 4 Pro page describes a 4K battery camera with a 180-degree field of view: Reolink Argus 4 Pro. Import costs, warranty handling and local replacement stock can be less predictable. Eufy can suit subscription-light consumer installations, but current Kenyan distribution and warranty should be confirmed before treating it as a leading local choice.
Hikvision versus Dahua: compare the installation, not the logo
Kenyan comparison reporting places both brands in similar four-camera kit ranges and describes them as widely available. The evidence supports “close competitors,” not a universal winner. Ask installers to quote equivalent systems and compare:
- Exact camera sensor, lens and low-light performance.
- Human/vehicle filtering and other analytics enabled on that model.
- NVR capacity, supported codecs and realistic retention.
- App and NVR usability, secure remote access and firmware support.
- Existing-cable compatibility, local replacement stock and warranty response.
- Integration with alarms, access control, intercoms or monitoring.
A properly designed Dahua system is preferable to a badly installed Hikvision system, and the reverse is equally true.

Resolution is not the same as useful evidence
| Resolution | Typical fit |
|---|---|
| 2MP / 1080p | Basic indoor areas and close entrances. |
| 4MP | Strong value for many homes and small shops. |
| 5MP–6MP | Wider scenes or subjects farther from the camera. |
| 8MP / 4K | Larger scenes and cropping, with higher storage and bandwidth needs. |
Before paying for more pixels, check sensor size, lens focal length, field of view, distance to a face or plate, bitrate, frame rate, compression, glare and lighting. A 4K camera pointed at a dark, overexposed gate can produce less useful evidence than a lower-resolution camera with a better lens and light.
Night vision and smart detection
Infrared (IR) produces monochrome images and can reflect from walls, glass, dust or spider webs. Full-colour and “starlight” systems need some ambient light; white-light cameras add active illumination that may deter intruders but can cause glare. Wide dynamic range helps with headlights and bright entrances. Motion blur, shutter speed and digital noise reduction often matter more than a claimed IR distance.

Detection features range from basic motion to human, vehicle, intrusion-zone and line-crossing alerts. Face detection is not face recognition, and neither is automatic number-plate recognition. AI can reduce alerts from trees, pets and shadows, but it does not eliminate false alarms; performance depends on angle, distance, lighting and firmware. For most homes, human and vehicle filtering is more useful than facial recognition.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Storage: microSD, NVR/DVR or cloud?
microSD
- Low upfront cost and useful for standalone cameras.
- May record without internet, but theft of the camera removes the evidence.
- Use a card rated for continuous surveillance recording and monitor its health.
NVR or DVR
- Centralises several cameras and supports easier export and review.
- Use a surveillance-rated hard drive, ventilation and a locked location.
- The recorder itself needs protection from theft, power loss and network misconfiguration.
Cloud
- Provides an off-site copy if local equipment is stolen.
- Introduces subscriptions, internet dependence, account risk, vendor-policy changes and possible overseas data transfers.
Estimate storage with cameras × average bitrate × recording hours per day × retention days, then convert bits to bytes and leave headroom. Bitrate, codec (H.264, H.265 or proprietary), audio, frame rate and continuous versus motion recording change the result. Require an installer to state the retention target and hard-drive capacity rather than promising a generic “30 days.”
Wired or wireless? Use this decision test
| Question | Choose wired PoE/NVR when… | Choose Wi-Fi, battery, solar or 4G when… |
|---|---|---|
| Number of cameras | You need several cameras or future expansion. | You need one or two standalone cameras. |
| Reliability | Continuous recording and dependable connectivity are critical. | Some interruption is acceptable and signal has been tested. |
| Installation | You can route cable and use conduit. | Cabling is prohibited, temporary or impractical. |
| Power | Mains and UPS can serve the recorder and PoE equipment. | The site is off-grid and solar/battery maintenance is manageable. |
| Internet | Internet is mainly for remote access; recording remains local. | 4G coverage and recurring data are available. |
Placement that produces usable footage
- Gate and driveway: Use a dedicated identification view rather than one ultra-wide camera for everything; avoid direct headlight glare.
- Front door: Mount high enough to resist tampering but low enough to capture faces, with controlled light.
- Cashier and stockroom: Confirm local rules and staff notice; aim for transaction and access zones, not unnecessary private areas.
- Perimeter and parking: Overlap blind spots and consider a narrower lens for vehicle or face identification.
- Outdoor housings: Check weather and vandal ratings, seal cable entries and keep spider webs and dirt off the lens.
Test every view at night, export a sample clip and check whether a person at the target distance can actually be identified before finalising the mount.
Installation, power and maintenance checklist
- Obtain a site survey showing camera positions, blind spots, cable routes and lighting.
- Specify the exact camera and recorder model numbers, not only the brand.
- Use suitable Ethernet, conduit, weatherproof terminations and a correctly sized PoE switch or PoE NVR.
- Put the NVR, router, modem and PoE equipment on a UPS; add surge protection and safe earthing.
- Change default credentials, enable two-factor authentication where available and keep firmware current.
- Set the date and time to synchronise correctly; test local recording and remote playback.
- Configure detection zones, sensitivity and schedules after observing normal activity for several days.
- Export a test clip to another device and verify that it plays.
- Clean lenses, inspect connectors, check hard-drive health and review retention periodically.
- Keep administrator credentials and footage-access responsibilities with the property owner, not only the installer.
Common faults and fixes
- Wi-Fi drops: Measure signal at the mount, add an access point or use Ethernet; do not confuse live view with proof of recording.
- Unreadable night video: Reposition away from reflective walls and headlights, narrow the lens, add controlled lighting and test WDR.
- No remote viewing: Confirm local recording first, then check internet, account, time settings and the manufacturer’s secure remote-access method.
- Missing footage: Check full or failing storage, motion-only settings, clock drift and overwrite period; use surveillance-rated drives and a UPS.
- Too many alerts: Mask roads and trees, enable human/vehicle filtering and lower sensitivity or schedule alerts.
- Power-cut failure: Back up the NVR, router, modem and PoE switch, and verify automatic restart after power returns.
Privacy and Kenyan data-protection duties
Identifiable CCTV footage can be personal data. Kenya’s Data Protection Act requires lawful, transparent and purpose-limited processing, data minimisation, retention controls and appropriate safeguards. The Data Protection General Regulations expressly recognise surveillance cameras as a means of collecting personal data indirectly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Define the security purpose and limit views to what is necessary.
- Do not aim cameras into bedrooms, bathrooms or neighbours’ private areas.
- Provide appropriate notice where people are recorded and restrict footage access.
- Set a retention period and delete footage when no longer necessary, subject to an investigation or legal requirement.
- Be especially cautious with audio, facial recognition, biometric use and publishing clips.
- Review whether cloud hosting transfers data outside Kenya and what the provider contract permits.
- Use written agreements covering installer access, confidentiality, support and deletion.
CCTV installation, servicing and monitoring are within Kenya’s private-security framework. For commercial work, verify that the provider is appropriately authorised and can supply a written scope, warranty and data-handling terms under the Private Security Regulation Act. Sensitive workplace, school, public-facing or biometric deployments warrant advice from the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner or a Kenyan lawyer.
