Meet CryptoRastas, the NFT Project Exploring Reggae Around the World

CryptoRastas is a Brazilian-founded digital-art and NFT project that brings reggae and dancehall figures into a collection of pixel-style avatars. Created by Digitaldubs founder Marcus “MPC” Menezes with Tiago Yaak identified as a co-creator, it set out to connect reggae artists and fans through blockchain collectibles, collaborations and community benefits. Its cultural ambition is clear; the lasting value of those benefits, and the rights attached to any token, require separate scrutiny.

What is CryptoRastas?

CryptoRastas is a collection of digital artworks linked to blockchain tokens. Each token is intended to identify a particular collectible character or artwork; owning the token does not, by itself, mean owning the image’s copyright, a song, an artist’s name or likeness, or physical merchandise. Those rights depend on the project’s applicable license.

The characters use a pixelated, avatar-like style, with visual references associated with reggae, dub, dancehall and Rastafari culture. The format recalls profile-picture NFT collections such as CryptoPunks, but the project’s stated aim was also to bring music culture and a global reggae community into the NFT economy. Menezes described the initial release as a pilot to learn how NFT platforms worked before a planned Digitaldubs-related project. Planeta Reggae’s May 2021 interview records that origin and the CryptoPunks inspiration.

CryptoRastas has been described in coverage as an early or first reggae NFT collection, but that is a historical promotional framing, not an independently established distinction. Its launch belongs to the 2021 NFT market; the figures reported at the time are snapshots rather than a current measure of supply, sales or demand.

Roots, Rock, Reggae: Live at the Hammersmith Odeon[180g 2 LP]
  • Roots, Rock, Reggae: Live at the Hammersmith Oden is a stunning, previously unreleased live album from Bob Marley, recorded over several nights during the Wailers' residency at London's prestigious Hammersmith Odeon in June 1976, during their Rastaman Vibration tour

Who created the project?

Marcus “MPC” Menezes and Digitaldubs

Menezes is a Brazilian music producer and founder of Digitaldubs, a Rio de Janeiro sound-system and production collective. Digitaldubs’ work with reggae and dub artists—including Lee “Scratch” Perry, Cedric Myton, Sugar Minott, Ranking Joe and Mad Professor—helps explain why CryptoRastas presented itself as a cultural network, not just a set of generic avatars. Coverage also notes work with Brazilian artists Gilberto Gil and Tom Zé. Underground Sound’s overview and Planeta Reggae’s interview describe the Digitaldubs connection.

Tiago Yaak

The Jamaica Observer’s September 2021 report identifies Tiago Yaak as a co-creator alongside Menezes. The project’s access to existing relationships in reggae helped it bring recognizable names into its early presentation.

Why bring reggae into NFTs?

The founders’ argument was that reggae had little visibility in the NFT market and that digital collectibles could offer artists another route to reach fans and earn revenue. They also described blockchain as a way to record token ownership and potentially distribute royalties on resales. The community concept extended beyond the artwork: the project promoted connections among reggae audiences in Jamaica, Brazil, the Caribbean and the diaspora, alongside possible music, merchandise and event benefits. Its current site describes a global community organized around digital art and reggae culture: CryptoRastas.

That model needs careful distinctions. A blockchain records control of a token; it does not automatically transfer intellectual-property rights in the art, music or likeness associated with it. Likewise, a promise of recurring royalties is not proof that every future resale will pay an artist: outcomes depend on the contract, marketplace rules and support, and where transactions take place. A collectible’s cultural significance is also different from its financial performance; prices can fall and a token may be difficult to resell.

Which reggae artists are represented?

Contemporary reporting associated CryptoRastas with established reggae and dub figures as well as newer artists. The names below are reported as collaborators, subjects or featured figures; that description does not establish that each person personally designed an NFT, endorsed a specific token, or received a particular payment.

Reported figures What the reporting establishes
Lee “Scratch” Perry, Cedric “Congo” Myton, Sugar Minott, Sly & Robbie, Ranking Joe, Augustus Pablo and Addis Pablo Named in contemporary coverage of the project or its artist associations; the exact role and approval for each individual should be confirmed against an official project listing or announcement. Jamaica Observer; Reggaeville.
Kabaka Pyramid, Jah9, Jesse Royal, Bushman, Yaadcore, Micah Shemaiah, Suns of Dub, Dada Yute, Etana and Bay-C Also named among artists associated with the collection in contemporary reporting; the sources do not establish an identical form of participation for every artist. DancehallMag; Jamaica Observer.

For any specific character, the meaningful questions are whether the artist approved or licensed the likeness, what the collaboration involved, and what compensation or rights were agreed. A name in a roundup is not a substitute for those details.

What happened at launch?

  • April 22, 2021: Brazilian outlet Popline introduced the series and reported that singer Azealia Banks had purchased a CryptoRastas character, citing the project. Popline’s report.
  • May 18, 2021: Planeta Reggae published Menezes’ account of the pilot-project idea and CryptoPunks inspiration. Planeta Reggae.
  • August 29, 2021: The launch date later reported by the Jamaica Observer. Its September 12 article said 3,600 NFTs had sold by then—a dated report, not a lifetime total. Jamaica Observer.
  • November 20, 2021: A Reggaeville announcement promoted an OpenSea auction with bids starting at 1 ETH and claimed more than 10,000 generative avatars had sold. That sales figure was a press-release claim made at the time, not an independently audited current total. Reggaeville.

The two sales counts refer to different moments and sources, so they should not be combined into a present-day total. Nor does an auction’s starting bid establish what an item ultimately sold for or what an artist earned.

What were collectors meant to receive?

The core object was a digital collectible. Project coverage and announcements also described community participation, artist collaborations, auctions, and possible access to music, merchandise, shows or festivals. Some later project updates referred to rewards or airdrops. These are best understood as announced or proposed utility unless a current, specific benefit can be verified.

Rastaman Vibration[LP]
  • After conquering England on tour, Bob Marley returned to Jamaica to record Rastaman Vibration with his band

Historical coverage establishes that artworks were sold and auctions were promoted, including an OpenSea auction announcement. It does not establish that merchandise can still be redeemed, event access remains active, music benefits are currently available, or a reward program is operating now. Current marketplace listings, contract details, royalties and benefits can change; consult the project’s official channels and the terms for the particular token before making a decision.

Reggae’s global reach—and what an avatar can’t represent

CryptoRastas’ premise links Jamaica’s foundational reggae and dancehall traditions with Brazil’s sound-system scene, Caribbean networks, European dub communities and audiences across Africa, North America and the wider diaspora. Its Brazilian origins are part of the story: Jamaican-rooted music has long traveled, been adapted and built into local scenes. Digital collectibles offer one more way for distant listeners to encounter artists and imagery.

But a collection cannot stand in for every reggae tradition, and using Rastafari-associated signs is not the same as representing Rastafari as a religious, political and historical movement. Dreadlocks, red-gold-green colors and musical references are recognizable visual cues, not a complete account of belief or practice. The fair question is not whether a project uses cultural imagery, but whether participating artists and communities have meaningful agency, clear rights and tangible benefit—and whether the presentation avoids flattening distinct cultures into a single brand.

What to check before buying a CryptoRastas NFT

  1. Start from the official project channel. Use the CryptoRastas site to locate current announcements or purchase routes. Searching a marketplace by name alone can surface counterfeit collections and copied artwork.
  2. Verify the exact collection and contract. Confirm the contract address through official project channels, then check that the marketplace listing matches it. Establish which blockchain and contract are being used now; historical reports do not settle current technical details.
  3. Read the rights and license terms. Determine what the token grants, whether commercial use is allowed, and whether image, music, publishing or master rights are excluded. Token ownership alone does not answer those questions.
  4. Confirm the artist’s role and compensation. Look for an official announcement or listing clarifying whether a character is licensed, commissioned, approved or merely inspired by an artist, and what payment or royalty arrangement applies.
  5. Check whether utility is live. Treat access to events, music, merchandise, airdrops or community rewards as unconfirmed until current eligibility, conditions and redemption details are stated.
  6. Assess liquidity and price carefully. A listed token is not necessarily easy to sell. A floor price is an asking price, not a completed sale, and a high-profile auction does not establish broad demand. Historical ETH figures are not current valuations.
  7. Protect the wallet and transaction. Use the marketplace address reached from an official source, avoid unsolicited links, and never share a wallet’s seed phrase. Self-custody makes private-key security the buyer’s responsibility; a lost key can mean losing practical access to the token.

Also account for crypto volatility, possible tax obligations that vary by jurisdiction, and the risk that token metadata or linked artwork depends on services that may change. None of the historical sales or promotional claims makes a purchase a reliable investment.
