Dell G3223Q Review: A Great 4K/144Hz Gaming Monitor That Falls Short of “Perfect” for Office Work

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict: The Dell G3223Q is still a strong mixed-use monitor when you want one flat 32-inch display for 4K gaming and everyday work. Its 3840×2160 Fast IPS panel, 144Hz refresh rate, HDMI 2.1 inputs, variable refresh rate and wide color gamut make it especially attractive for desktop PCs and current consoles. It is not literally perfect for an office, however: there is no USB-C video input or laptop charging, the USB hub is basic, the stand lacks pivot adjustment, and its 1000:1 IPS contrast limits HDR.

As of August 16, 2026, buy it only when the real selling price is clearly below newer monitors with better connectivity or HDR. Dell’s U.S. listing shows a $499.99 price signal but also inconsistent availability messaging, so check stock, condition, warranty region and the seller’s return policy before ordering.

What the Dell G3223Q is

The G3223Q is a 32-inch-class, flat 16:9 gaming monitor built around a 4K (3840×2160) Fast IPS panel. Dell rates it at 144Hz, 400 cd/m² typical brightness, 600 cd/m² peak brightness, 99% sRGB coverage, 95% DCI-P3 coverage and a 1000:1 typical contrast ratio. It carries VESA DisplayHDR 600 certification and supports AMD FreeSync Premium Pro plus NVIDIA G-SYNC compatibility.

Those specifications describe a conventional edge-lit LCD, not an OLED or mini-LED display. The official specification sheet is available on Dell’s product page.

Dell’s “1ms” figure applies to its Extreme overdrive mode. It is a manufacturer setting claim, not a promise of a measured 1ms average response time; independent motion tests are more useful for judging ghosting and overshoot.

Gaming performance

4K at 144Hz

4K looks noticeably sharper than 1440p at this size, while 144Hz makes supported games, camera movement and menus feel smoother than a 60Hz display. Reaching high frame rates at native 4K still requires a powerful graphics card. Less capable systems may need upscaling, reduced settings or a lower refresh rate. Adaptive sync remains useful when frame rates fluctuate below 144 fps.

PC gaming

DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.1 provide flexible connections for modern GPUs. Independent reviews from Tom’s Hardware, PCWorld and RTINGS broadly describe the monitor as fast and responsive for a 4K IPS model. It is a particularly good fit for single-player games, racing titles, RPGs, strategy and general gaming. Serious esports players may prefer a smaller, higher-refresh screen designed around easier competitive frame rates.

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S

The two HDMI 2.1 ports can enable 4K/120Hz when the console, game, cable and settings all support that mode. Current major consoles generally target up to 120Hz, not 144Hz, so the monitor’s extra refresh headroom is mainly a PC benefit. PCWorld specifically highlights the HDMI 2.1, adaptive-sync and high-refresh combination for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X owners.

There are no built-in speakers. Console owners need a headset, headphones or separate speakers, and should verify console VRR behavior with their exact setup rather than assuming every game supports it.

Image quality: excellent SDR, qualified HDR

SDR color, sharpness and viewing angles

The dense 4K pixel grid produces crisp text, detailed images and ample desktop space. IPS viewing angles remain stable, and the matte anti-glare surface is practical in a normally lit room. Dell claims a minimum sRGB Delta E below 2, 99% sRGB and 95% DCI-P3; those are factory specifications, not a substitute for measuring a particular unit. The wide gamut can make photos and video look vivid, but unmanaged older applications may appear oversaturated. Use an sRGB mode or operating-system color management for web-focused work when needed.

Why HDR is the compromise

DisplayHDR 600 certification indicates a brightness and capability class; it does not guarantee OLED-like contrast. The G3223Q’s 1000:1 native contrast and conventional backlight cannot keep bright highlights truly separate from dark areas. As PCWorld, Tom’s Hardware and RTINGS note, HDR highlights can look stronger than basic SDR, but dark scenes may appear gray or washed out. IPS glow and backlight bleed also vary by unit. Choose OLED or a good mini-LED model if cinematic HDR and deep blacks are your priority.

Office experience

Workspace and text

A 32-inch 4K canvas is well suited to large spreadsheets, side-by-side documents, coding, browser-heavy work, photo editing and video timelines without the distortion of an ultrawide aspect ratio. At 100% Windows scaling, interface elements may be too small for many people. 125% or 150% often offers a more comfortable balance; the right choice depends on viewing distance, eyesight and application behavior.

Why 144Hz can help at work

High refresh is not essential for documents, but scrolling, cursor movement, window dragging and timeline scrubbing feel more immediate. That is a real benefit, though it should not outweigh USB-C docking, better ergonomics or stronger contrast if those are your priorities.

Stand and desk fit

The supplied stand provides height, tilt and swivel adjustment, including about 3.9 inches of height range, but Dell does not list pivot rotation. The monitor is roughly 28.6 inches wide, 9.7 inches deep with its stand and 18.07–22.01 inches high; stand-equipped weight is about 20.3 pounds. A shallow desk can place a 32-inch panel uncomfortably close. A properly rated 100×100mm VESA arm can improve positioning, but it does not add portrait rotation unless the arm supports it.

Dell 24 240Hz Gaming Monitor - SE2426HG - 23.8-inch FHD (1920x1080) 240Hz Display, in-Plane Switching (IPS) Technology, AMD FreeSync™ Premium, TÜV 3-Star, 2X HDMI, DisplayPort 1.4, Tilt
  • Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
  • Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
  • Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
  • Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
  • Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.

The laptop-office limitation

There is no USB-C display input, USB-C Power Delivery, Thunderbolt, Ethernet or KVM. A USB-C laptop therefore needs a dock, or a USB-C-to-DisplayPort/HDMI cable plus separate charging and peripherals. The monitor also has no webcam or speakers and only a small USB-A hub. These omissions are minor for a desktop tower, but they make the G3223Q much less convenient than a business monitor for a one-cable laptop desk.

Build, ports and practical setup

In addition to its two HDMI 2.1 and one DisplayPort 1.4 inputs, Dell includes DisplayPort, HDMI and USB upstream cables. The USB-A BC 1.2 port can charge compatible devices, but it is not a substitute for laptop power delivery. Plan separate audio hardware, and check that any monitor arm supports the panel’s weight and VESA pattern.

Reliability, warranty and panel variation

Dell lists a three-year limited warranty, Advanced Exchange Service and Premium Panel Guarantee in the United States. Online forum posts mention image retention or units that fail to power on, but anecdotal reports cannot establish a failure rate or prove a systemic defect. Treat them as reasons to verify firmware, return terms and warranty coverage, not as evidence that every unit is unreliable. IPS glow and backlight bleed likewise vary between panels.

G3223Q versus Dell UltraSharp alternatives

Model What it adds Where it loses to the G3223Q Price signal and status
UltraSharp U3223QE 31.5-inch 4K IPS Black, USB-C with up to 90W Power Delivery, Ethernet, extensive USB hub, DisplayPort output and pivot-capable stand Office-first design; not the gaming value or high-refresh choice $919.99 shown; Dell page also indicated temporary stock issues
UltraSharp U3225QE IPS Black, 120Hz, Thunderbolt 4, up to 140W Power Delivery, 2.5GbE, broader USB connectivity and pivot adjustment; claimed 3000:1 contrast Lower refresh rate and roughly twice the G3223Q’s displayed price Approximately $969.99–$1,029.99 depending on page and promotion
Gigabyte M32U A direct class comparison among 32-inch 4K high-refresh IPS gaming monitors Current price, ports, KVM, HDR and stand details require checking the current official listing Not stated here

The UltraSharp models make sense when docking, charging, Ethernet, KVM and ergonomics matter more than gaming speed. OLED and mini-LED alternatives are stronger for HDR and contrast but can cost more and may introduce different text-rendering, burn-in or static-workload considerations.

Price and availability in 2026

The G3223Q is an older design, while newer displays offer OLED, mini-LED, higher refresh rates, USB-C or better HDR. Dell’s U.S. page currently combines a $499.99 price signal with unavailable or low-stock messaging, so the effective recommendation depends on the actual seller and condition. A new unit at a substantial discount can be compelling; a refurbished or used unit needs a clear return policy, dead-pixel coverage and warranty confirmation. If its price approaches a newer monitor with USB-C or materially better HDR, the G3223Q loses its value advantage.

Who should buy it?

Buy the G3223Q when you:

  • Want one flat 32-inch 4K display for desktop gaming and work.
  • Need HDMI 2.1 for a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.
  • Value IPS viewing angles, broad color and 144Hz more than deep blacks.
  • Use a desktop PC, console or existing laptop dock.
  • Can find it at a meaningful discount and can provide separate audio.

Choose something else when you:

  • Work mainly from a USB-C laptop and need charging through the monitor.
  • Require Ethernet, KVM, daisy-chaining, pivot rotation or a full docking station.
  • Prioritize dark-room HDR movies, OLED contrast or mini-LED local dimming.
  • Need built-in speakers or have a shallow desk.
  • Would pay near the price of a newer display with better connectivity and HDR.

Final verdict

The Dell G3223Q remains a very good gaming-first monitor that doubles as an excellent office display for many desktop users. Its sharp 4K IPS image, smooth 144Hz operation, HDMI 2.1 and VRR support are still compelling. Calling it universally “perfect for the office” is inaccurate: USB-C docking, Power Delivery, KVM, Ethernet, speakers and pivot adjustment are all missing, and HDR is limited by ordinary IPS contrast. Buy it when the price reflects its age and your setup does not require those business features; otherwise, an office-focused UltraSharp or a newer HDR gaming monitor is the better investment.
