The Copilot Keyboard Key: What It Does and How to Remap It

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Copilot key is a dedicated key on some Windows 11 keyboards that opens a Copilot-related experience—or, on supported systems, another configured app. What it opens and how you can change it depend on Windows, the keyboard, your account and any organization policy. If it has taken the place of Right Ctrl or the Context Menu key, try Windows’ built-in customization first; if that option is unavailable or too limited, Microsoft PowerToys can often remap the shortcut the key sends.

What the Copilot key is—and what it is not

Introduced on some Windows 11 devices beginning in 2024, the Copilot key is a hardware shortcut marked with the Copilot logo. It may appear on a laptop, desktop keyboard or external keyboard, often near the right-hand Alt, Ctrl or arrow keys. Depending on the layout, it may replace Right Ctrl or the Context Menu key, though manufacturers do not all use the same arrangement. Microsoft describes device and key behavior in its Copilot-key guidance.

The physical key is not the same thing as the software it opens. Nor does having the key mean a computer is a Copilot+ PC or that its owner has a paid Microsoft 365 Copilot subscription. Copilot+ PC is a separate class of Windows computers; the keyboard key is simply an input whose destination depends on the device and Windows configuration.

What happens when you press it?

On a supported Windows device, the key can open a Windows Copilot experience or the Microsoft Copilot app. In some commercial or organizational configurations, it can open Microsoft 365 Copilot; a user or administrator may also be able to select a supported app. Microsoft explains access to Microsoft 365 Copilot from Windows here. A disabled or remapped key may do something else—or nothing.

The outcome can vary with the Windows build, installed apps, personal versus work account, organization policy, device firmware and manufacturer software. To work out what controls your particular key, test it with no app focused, in a plain text editor, inside a Microsoft 365 app, in an elevated app, and with an external keyboard connected to the same PC. Different results can point to app-specific behavior, permission boundaries or a different keyboard implementation.

There is no single signal that every Copilot key sends. Microsoft PowerToys documentation lists common implementations as Windows + C and Left Shift + Windows + F23. A physical key that looks identical can therefore be treated by Windows as a shortcut sequence rather than as a distinct key code. That distinction matters when remapping it.

Check Windows’ built-in customization

Start with Windows settings: native controls are preferable when your PC exposes them, and may be able to restore a conventional key without relying on a background remapping utility. The menu and destinations are not universal; the relevant option can vary by Windows version, device, account and organization policy.

Consumer Windows settings

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Bluetooth & devices, then Keyboard.
  3. Look for the Copilot-key customization option.
  4. If offered, choose a listed action. Microsoft documents Context menu and Right Ctrl as possible remapping targets on supported devices.
  5. Apply the change, then test the key in the apps where you need it.

Commercial or managed devices

Microsoft documents another route for commercial configurations: Settings > Personalization > Text input > Customize Copilot key on keyboard. The available target may be controlled by the organization, which can configure the key for Microsoft 365 Copilot. See Microsoft’s Windows Copilot management documentation for that scenario.

If neither path appears, it does not necessarily mean the keyboard is defective. The device may not expose the expected key to Windows, the feature may not be available for that build or account, manufacturer software may control it, or an organization may restrict the setting. Check Windows and manufacturer updates and any keyboard-specific utility before moving to a third-party remapping approach.

Remap the key with PowerToys

When Windows has no native control for your device, Microsoft PowerToys Keyboard Manager is a flexible option for mapping the key’s detected input to another shortcut, key, text, app or URI. It is free and open source, but the mapping works only while PowerToys is running in the background. Microsoft’s Keyboard Manager documentation covers setup and limitations; the PowerToys overview describes the utility suite.

  1. Install and open Microsoft PowerToys.
  2. In PowerToys Settings, select Keyboard Manager and turn it on.
  3. Select Remap a shortcut. The Copilot key may send a shortcut sequence, so Remap a key may not capture it as expected.
  4. Add an input shortcut and press the physical Copilot key in the capture field. Let PowerToys detect what it sends instead of guessing the sequence.
  5. Choose the output action, then select OK and test it in the apps you use.

Choose an output that fits the job

  • Restore Context Menu: select it as the output if PowerToys offers it and the mapping works in your target applications.
  • Restore Right Ctrl: try it if available, but test combinations carefully. A synthetic modifier may not behave exactly like a physical Right Ctrl key.
  • Use an unused function key: mapping the Copilot shortcut to F13 gives you a distinct input you can bind separately in compatible launchers, macros or creative apps.
  • Launch an app: Keyboard Manager can start an application from a shortcut. Set its executable path and, if needed, arguments, working directory and elevation behavior; paths differ between installations. Its launch options also include ways to handle an app that is already running.
  • Disable the shortcut: use a disabled action if PowerToys offers it for the captured input. A native Windows no-op or “Do nothing” choice may also be available on some systems, but is not universal.

For supported destinations in Windows’ own picker, an app can register as a Copilot hardware-key provider; this is a developer integration, not a general promise that any installed app will appear there. Microsoft describes the provider model in its Windows app documentation. PowerToys is the more direct choice for personal remapping to an arbitrary supported executable or URI.

Troubleshoot remapping problems

PowerToys does not detect the key

  • Use Remap a shortcut and press the physical key in the capture dialog; do not assume it sends a unique Copilot key code.
  • Check whether manufacturer keyboard software is intercepting the input, then restart or toggle Keyboard Manager.
  • Test outside a game, virtual machine or remote session, where input handling may differ.
  • Confirm PowerToys is running. If the target app is elevated, PowerToys may also need to run elevated for the mapping to reach it.

The remap works in some apps but not others

Keyboard interception is not guaranteed to work in every program. Elevated applications, games, remote-desktop software, virtual machines and apps that use low-level keyboard input can behave differently. Microsoft advises against using Keyboard Manager during games because interception can affect performance or compatibility. It also does not provide separate mappings for different physical keyboards, so one PC cannot use the feature to assign one Copilot key behavior to an internal keyboard and another to an external keyboard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keyboard Manager does not work at the Windows login screen or password screens. If a mapping stops after restarting, check that PowerToys is configured to start with Windows and is still running.

Right Ctrl does not act like a physical Right Ctrl

Modifier keys are harder to reproduce reliably than ordinary keys. Test the combinations you depend on, including software that distinguishes Right Ctrl from Left Ctrl or uses Ctrl+Alt and AltGr behavior. Microsoft specifically warns that combinations involving physical Left Shift and remapped Right Ctrl may not work consistently on all keyboards. If a critical workflow remains unreliable, restoring the key through the Windows-native option—or choosing hardware with the conventional key—may be a better fit.

A work device blocks customization

On a managed PC, policy may determine which app the key opens or whether a user can change it. Ask your IT administrator whether the device is configured for Microsoft 365 Copilot and which customization options are permitted. A personal PowerToys mapping may not override organizational controls or work in every managed app.

Will it work on macOS or Linux?

The key is physically present regardless of operating system, but its useful behavior depends on the keyboard’s firmware and the OS. Microsoft’s Copilot-key experience is documented for supported Windows devices; that documentation does not establish a standard behavior on macOS or Linux. On those systems the input might appear as a shortcut, an unusual function key or a vendor-specific event. A desktop environment or remapping utility may let you repurpose it, but test the exact keyboard rather than assuming it will work—or fail—in a particular way.

Should you choose a keyboard with a Copilot key?

The key is most useful if you regularly use the Copilot experience it opens and value a one-press shortcut. It is less attractive if it displaces a key you rely on, or if you expect the same behavior across devices and operating systems. Consider the layout, not just the logo: check whether the keyboard retains Right Ctrl and Context Menu, and confirm the manufacturer’s current specification before buying.

User or use case Practical choice
Frequent Copilot user A dedicated key may be convenient if its configured destination matches the Copilot app or work experience you use.
Does not use Copilot Prefer a conventional layout unless the key can be reassigned to a useful action on that specific device.
Depends on Right Ctrl or Context Menu Confirm native remapping is available and test the replacement before relying on it.
IT-managed Microsoft 365 user Check the organization’s configuration and account setup; the key may be centrally directed to Microsoft 365 Copilot.
Gamer or heavy remote-desktop user Do not rely on PowerToys interception without testing the games and remote tools in question.
Primarily uses macOS or Linux Verify the exact keyboard’s behavior on that operating system before purchase.
Needs reliable macros or layers Consider programmable hardware or a conventional keyboard with manufacturer-level controls.

If occasional Copilot access is all you want, a dedicated key may not be necessary: Windows + C is one Copilot-related shortcut documented by PowerToys, although its behavior can change with Windows and Copilot releases. For a keyboard you already own, try native Windows customization first and PowerToys second. For a new purchase, verify the layout and remapping support rather than assuming the Copilot key is either a benefit or a flaw. Microsoft’s documentation cited here was checked August 18, 2026; menu labels and available choices may differ on a particular build or device.
