On an ad-supported plan, Netflix currently allows 15 total downloads per device per calendar month. On an ad-free plan, the limit is up to 100 active downloads per device. Separate rules govern how many devices may store downloads, how often a particular title can be downloaded, whether a title is downloadable at all, and when a download expires.
These rules were confirmed on Netflix help pages available August 18, 2026. Plan names, features and device allowances can vary by country, bundle and billing arrangement.
The five Netflix download limits
| Restriction | What it controls | What happens when you reach it |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly quota | Ad-supported plans: 15 total downloads per device per calendar month | Wait for the first day of the next month or change to an ad-free plan |
| Active-download capacity | Ad-free plans: up to 100 active downloads at one time per device | Delete active downloads or use another permitted device |
| Download-device allowance | How many supported devices on the plan may contain downloads | Remove downloads from another device or change plan |
| Title-specific licensing | Some movies and shows can be downloaded only a limited number of times per account each year | Wait for the date shown, stream the title, or choose another one |
| Expiration | How long a particular downloaded title remains playable | Reconnect and renew or download again if Netflix still permits it |
Netflix documents the 15-download rule at its ad-supported-plan error page and the 100-active-download rule, expiration and device behavior on its download help page.
How many downloads does each plan allow?
Ad-supported plans: 15 downloads per device each month
Netflix says an ad-supported plan permits 15 total downloads per device per calendar month. The counter resets on the first day of every calendar month. This is a count of download events, not simply the number of files currently stored. Deleting a movie or episode therefore may not return that month’s quota.

Netflix’s “Download Max Reached” example says a plan supports 15 monthly downloads per device for two total devices. Streaming remains available when the download quota is exhausted, provided the device is online. See Netflix’s current explanation.
Ad-free plans: up to 100 active downloads per device
Netflix describes ad-free plans as allowing up to 100 active downloads at a time per device. “Active” means titles currently held in the device’s Downloads library; it is not a monthly number of download events. Removing an active download can create room under this ceiling, but it cannot undo a title-specific annual licensing count.
How many devices can store downloads?
The plan controls the number of supported devices that may contain downloads simultaneously. Netflix’s country-specific plan table retrieved for this article listed one download device for Mobile, one for Basic, two for Standard and six for Premium. Those figures are not universal: check the plan page for your country, and check separately if your subscription is billed through a bundle or third party. Netflix lists download-device allowances at this plan comparison page.
“Download on two devices” does not mean two titles. It means two qualifying devices may store downloads, with each device subject to its own active-download or monthly rules. Download-device allowances are also separate from simultaneous-streaming limits.

What Netflix download errors mean
“Download Max Reached”
This is the ad-supported plan’s monthly quota. Waiting until the first day of the next calendar month is the no-cost fix. Netflix also presents switching to an ad-free plan as the immediate alternative. Deleting existing files may not help because the restriction concerns downloads made during the month, not just storage capacity.
“Download Limit Warning”
This warning applies to a particular title whose license limits the number of downloads per account per year. On Android, Netflix may say, “Due to licensing, this can only be downloaded one more time before (DATE).” You can use the displayed final download; after that, the same title cannot be downloaded again until the stated date. Details are in Netflix’s Android warning guidance.
“You have reached the yearly download limit for this video”
This is title-specific, not a universal account-wide download cap. Netflix recommends streaming the title online or selecting another downloadable title. The exact number of allowed downloads is not published and can vary with the rights arrangement. See Netflix’s iPhone and iPad guidance.
“This title can only be downloaded 1 more time”
The title is approaching its annual allowance. Netflix says it may then be unavailable for download again for up to a year; use the date displayed in the app rather than assuming a fixed 12-month reset. The iPhone and iPad explanation is at Netflix’s support page.

An expired download
Netflix says downloads expire after a period determined by licensing. Its general page does not establish one universal seven-day, 30-day or other deadline. Open the Downloads area while online and try to renew or download the title again. Renewal can still fail if the title has reached a licensing limit, is no longer downloadable or has left the service.
How long do Netflix downloads last?
There is no single expiration period that applies to every Netflix download. The app may show remaining time for an individual title. Expiration is separate from the monthly quota and the 100-active-download ceiling, so deleting a file does not extend another title’s authorization. A title that expires must generally be renewed or downloaded again while online, if it remains eligible.
Supported devices and the current download path
Netflix’s current general help page lists Android phones and tablets, iPhones and iPads, Amazon Fire tablets, and compatible Chromebooks with the Google Play Store. It does not list Windows among the supported devices on that page, so older Windows-download instructions should not be assumed to work in every region or app version.
- Install the latest Netflix app and update the device operating system where possible.
- Find a title with the download icon, or use the app’s downloadable-title filter.
- For a movie, select Download. For a series, select the icon beside an episode or Download Season when offered.
- Prefer Wi-Fi, especially for a season or multiple large files.
- Open Downloads to confirm the title appears before travelling.
- Select the downloaded title and tap Play.
Netflix announced a Download Season button for iPhone and iPad in January 2025; availability and labels can vary by title and app version. Announcement: Netflix Newsroom.

How to watch downloads offline
Open the Netflix app, choose Downloads, select a title and tap Play. You must remain signed in to the Netflix account to access downloads offline. Downloads are stored on the device that obtained them, but Netflix says any profile on that device can view them subject to profile controls, including Kids maturity restrictions.

You reached the monthly quota
- Wait for the first day of the next calendar month.
- Stream until then if you have an internet connection.
- Consider an ad-free plan if you regularly need more than 15 download events per device each month.
You reached 100 active downloads or ran out of storage
- Delete watched or unwanted files.
- Check the device’s free storage; Netflix’s account limit is separate from local storage.
- Lower download quality if your app offers that setting.
- Download selected episodes instead of an entire season.
A specific title is blocked
- Read the message for a displayed date or remaining download.
- Stream the title, use the final permitted download carefully, or select another title.
- Do not expect a plan upgrade to remove a licensing restriction.
Too many download devices
Check which devices currently hold downloads and the allowance shown for your country’s plan. Remove downloads from another qualifying device if necessary, or change plan. The exact management controls and plan counts can vary by account and region.
The title has no Download button
Not every title is available offline. Licensing, regional availability, device compatibility, an outdated app or an outdated operating system can all matter. Update the app and device first, then try another title.
An offline title will not play
Connect briefly to the internet, confirm that you are still signed in, and check whether the file expired or the title left the service. A Kids profile may also be prevented from playing a download above its maturity setting. An interrupted transfer can leave a file that must be downloaded again.

Should you upgrade Netflix?
An ad-free upgrade is most useful when the recurring problem is the 15-download monthly quota or the smaller active-download capacity. It is not a universal cure: title-specific annual limits, expiration, unavailable titles, unsupported devices, insufficient storage and download-device allowances can still apply. Compare your country’s current options at Netflix’s plan selection page and do not assume a price or plan name from another country.
Waiting is better when your trip begins after the monthly reset and you do not need more files immediately. Deleting files is appropriate for active-download capacity or storage, but not for monthly or annual licensing quotas. Streaming or choosing another title is the practical answer to a title-specific block.
Important account and travel caveats
- Canceling Netflix deletes downloads from the device; restarting membership does not restore them, so you must download again.
- Keep the app signed in before going offline.
- Download while online and open each title once to verify it appears in Downloads.
- Check any expiry information shown in the app.
- Leave sufficient device storage and carry alternate titles in case licensing changes.
- Do not rely on unofficial downloaders, screen recorders or DRM-removal tools; they are not Netflix-supported solutions and can create account, copyright or security problems.
The Bottom Line
For an ad-supported Netflix plan, the current limit is 15 total downloads per device per calendar month. Ad-free plans allow up to 100 active downloads per device. Plan device allowances, title-specific annual licensing limits and expiration rules are separate, so deleting a file or upgrading will not fix every download error.
