You usually cannot turn off every keyboard shortcut with one switch. Shortcuts may belong to your operating system, browser, website, application, or an accessibility tool. Identify which one is responding, then disable or remap that specific shortcut where it is defined.
The instructions below reflect the documented controls available as of August 18, 2026. Labels can change between software versions.
First, find out what owns the shortcut
Before changing settings, write down the exact key combination, what it does, and which window has focus. A shortcut that works only on one site is likely handled by the site or a browser extension; one that works before an app opens may belong to the operating system or a utility.
- Try the combination in a plain text editor or another neutral application. If it only causes trouble in one app or website, start there.
- Close the suspected application and test again. If the action stops, inspect that application’s shortcut settings.
- If it happens in a browser, test in a private or incognito window. Temporarily disable extensions, or ensure they are not allowed in that private window, then retest.
- Notice whether the action occurs before the active application responds—for example, switching desktops or opening system search. That points to an operating-system, desktop, or utility shortcut.
- Check accessibility features, keyboard remappers, manufacturer utilities, overlays, screen readers, input methods, and remote-desktop software if the source is still unclear.
- If only one website responds, look for the site’s own keyboard-shortcut settings. Changing a system shortcut will not necessarily stop a web page from handling a key press.
Also note whether the behavior changes with the active window, editor mode, language, or keyboard layout. Some applications assign the same key differently in different contexts.

Fewer air bubbles – for the smoothest finish, don’t peel off the entire backing at once. Instead, fold back a small section, line it up, and press gradually as you peel more. The “peel-and-stick-all-at-once” method only works for thin decals, not for stickers like ours.

Windows: change the specific feature or app binding
Windows does not offer a general Settings switch that disables all Windows and application shortcuts. Its built-in keyboard controls cover particular accessibility features and their activation shortcuts. Microsoft’s accessibility shortcut list includes examples such as pressing Shift five times for Sticky Keys, holding Right Shift for eight seconds for Filter Keys, and pressing Left Alt + Left Shift + Print Screen for High Contrast.
Stop an accessibility prompt or behavior
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.
- Turn off the relevant feature—such as Sticky Keys, Filter Keys, Toggle Keys, or Mouse Keys—or adjust its activation shortcut if that control is available.
- Test the original key sequence again. If the feature still activates, check its individual options and confirm you changed the setting for the correct Windows account.
This changes the named accessibility feature, not unrelated shortcuts such as window switching or commands inside an app. Avoid disabling an accessibility feature if you rely on it; choose another activation method or keep an alternate access route.
For a Windows, utility, or app shortcut
For a shortcut owned by an application, use that application’s shortcut preferences. If a screen recorder, graphics driver, gaming overlay, keyboard utility, or remote-access client intercepts the combination, Windows’ normal keyboard settings may not affect it; inspect the utility’s own hotkey controls or temporarily exit it to confirm.
The remedy for a Windows shell shortcut depends on the exact shortcut and Windows edition. On a managed business computer, an administrator may control behavior through policy or endpoint-management tools. Do not apply a generic registry file or undocumented registry change: it may target the wrong Windows version or alter unrelated behavior.

macOS: disable or remap individual system shortcuts
macOS lets you manage individual system shortcuts rather than switching them all off. Apple notes that available shortcuts can vary by app, language, and keyboard layout. See its macOS shortcut settings guide for current details.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts.
- Select a category such as Mission Control, Spotlight, Services, or Accessibility.
- Deselect the checkbox beside a shortcut to disable it. To change it instead, double-click its key combination and press the replacement keys.
- If the change does not take effect immediately, quit and reopen the affected app. Use Restore Defaults in the shortcut settings if you need to undo changes.
Change a shortcut for an app menu command
For a command shown in one app’s menus, open System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > App Shortcuts, then add or edit the app and menu command. Assign a replacement combination, or use the app’s own controls if it supports disabling the command. This feature applies to menu commands; it may not override reserved shortcuts or commands that are generated dynamically. Conflicting assignments can also prevent the intended shortcut from working. See Apple’s App Shortcuts guidance. Quit and reopen the app to test the change.
Do not confuse shortcuts with accessibility features
Shortcuts for Full Keyboard Access, Sticky Keys, Slow Keys, and the Accessibility Keyboard are managed separately from ordinary system shortcuts. The Accessibility Shortcuts panel can be opened with Option + Command + F5, or with three presses of Touch ID on supported hardware. Change the feature or its activation option only if that is the behavior you want to stop; Apple’s accessibility keyboard settings explain those controls.
Ubuntu and other Linux desktops
On Ubuntu’s GNOME desktop, you can disable or replace a shortcut through Settings. The precise controls differ across desktop environments, so these steps are not universal Linux instructions.

Ubuntu documents this workflow in its keyboard shortcut settings guide. KDE Plasma, Cinnamon, Xfce, and other desktops use different interfaces. A shortcut may belong to the desktop shell, window manager, app, input-method framework, extension, compositor, or vendor utility. Wayland and X11 can also differ in how global shortcuts are registered and delivered. If the shortcut is absent from the visible settings, identify the desktop environment and check its extensions or background utilities rather than assuming the Ubuntu steps apply.
Browser shortcuts: separate browser commands from website actions
A browser, an extension, and a website can all react to keys. First test with extensions disabled and check the website’s own controls. Changing a browser command will not necessarily change a site’s behavior, and changing a site’s shortcut will not release a system-reserved combination.
Firefox
Starting with Firefox 147, Mozilla documents an experimental shortcut customization page for dozens of browser shortcuts on Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is version-dependent and may not always work as expected; it does not promise control of every browser command, extension shortcut, or website action. Follow Mozilla’s Firefox shortcut customization instructions.

Chrome and Chromium browsers
Chrome has no general consumer setting to disable every built-in browser shortcut. Check the website’s shortcut settings first, then temporarily disable extensions at chrome://extensions and retest in Incognito with extensions unavailable. Also check the operating system if the combination triggers an action outside the page.
Chrome DevTools has its own shortcut settings, including a documented preview shortcut editor. Those controls apply inside DevTools, not to all Chrome browser shortcuts; see the DevTools shortcut documentation. Chrome policy management is intended for administrators managing deployments, not as a routine personal setting; Google documents it for Chrome Enterprise. A shortcut-management extension may help in some cases, but its permissions and browser limitations matter, and it may not intercept reserved commands.

Microsoft Edge: administrator policy
For managed deployments, Microsoft documents the ConfigureKeyboardShortcuts policy, which can disable specified command shortcuts on Windows version 101 or later. This is an administrator control, not a general consumer settings switch. Microsoft says it is unsupported on macOS, removes the shortcut mapping for a disabled command, and requires a browser restart because dynamic policy refresh is unavailable. See the Edge policy reference.
Application shortcuts: use the app’s own editor
Desktop apps commonly define their own bindings. Start with the app’s shortcut preferences; only change an operating-system shortcut when the operating system is the owner. This applies to productivity and creative software, terminals, and games as well as code editors. Games may use overlays or special input modes that bypass ordinary desktop shortcut settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsVS Code: remove, remap, or limit a keybinding
- Open File > Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts on Windows or Linux. On macOS, use Code > Settings > Keyboard Shortcuts. You can also open the editor with
Ctrl+K Ctrl+Son Windows/Linux orCmd+K Cmd+Son macOS. - Search by command name, or use the editor to find bindings that match a key combination.
- Right-click the command and choose Remove Keybinding, or edit the binding. For direct editing, open
keybindings.json. - VS Code documents removal rules using a command prefixed with
-. An empty command can suppress a binding, for example{ "key": "tab", "command": "" }. The effect depends on binding precedence and context, so test the exact case. - Use a
whenclause if the key should be disabled only in a particular context rather than throughout the editor.
See the VS Code keybindings reference and its personalization guide. Be cautious with foundational keys: disabling Tab, Ctrl+C, or Esc can disrupt editing, autocomplete, debugging, terminal use, or accessibility workflows.
Quick Recap
If the shortcut still works
- Wrong layer: The change may have targeted the OS when the app, browser, extension, or website owns the binding. Repeat the neutral-app and extension-disabled tests.
- Reserved combination: Desktop switching, system search, accessibility toggles, or hardware controls may be intercepted before the application receives the key.
- Context or layout difference: The binding may depend on focus, mode, language, or keyboard layout. Apple and VS Code both note layout-related behavior; compare the active layout with the one assumed by the shortcut instructions.
- Remote desktop or virtual machine: The local OS, remote OS, browser, and client can compete for the same keys. Test which machine reacts before changing settings on either one.
- Full-screen app or game: Overlays, raw input, exclusive input modes, and anti-cheat software can affect whether a desktop setting reaches the app.
- Change not applied: Reopen the application or browser when required, then retest. Edge’s documented policy specifically requires a restart.
Make changes safely and recover if needed
- Record the original combination and the setting you changed.
- Prefer remapping when the action is still useful; disable only the unwanted binding or feature.
- Keep an alternate way to reach essential commands and accessibility functions before removing their keyboard route.
- If the behavior worsens, restore the app’s or system’s default shortcuts, remove temporary remappers or extensions, and reopen the affected software.
