Chrome can extract a clean still image from many desktop HTML5 videos. Pause the video, right-click directly on the player, choose Copy Video Frame, then paste the image into an editor, document, email, chat or notes app. If your menu includes Save video frame as, Chrome can download the frame as an image file instead.
Google introduced Copy Video Frame on August 31, 2023—not as a brand-new 2026 feature. Menu labels and availability still vary by Chrome version, operating system, player and video.
What Chrome’s video-frame feature does
Copy Video Frame reads the current frame from a webpage’s video element and places image data on the clipboard. Unlike a conventional screenshot, the result is intended to exclude browser tabs, desktop content, playback controls and the progress bar. Chromium also contains a related Save video frame as command. Its documented implementation downloads the current frame as a PNG and recorded manual tests saving the video’s original resolution on Windows and Mac. That is implementation evidence, not a guarantee for every site or stream: Chromium implementation notes.

Copy a frame to the clipboard
- Open the video in desktop Google Chrome.
- Play it briefly if necessary so the frame is rendered.
- Pause at the moment you want.
- Move the pointer over the video itself and right-click.
- Select Copy Video Frame.
- Open an image editor, document, email composer, chat or notes app.
- Paste with Ctrl+V on Windows, Linux and ChromeOS, or Command+V on macOS.
The destination must accept images. A plain-text field cannot display the copied frame, so try an image editor or document app if paste appears to do nothing. The clipboard is replaced by your next copy operation.
Save the frame as an image file
- Pause the video at the desired frame.
- Right-click directly on the player.
- Choose Save video frame as, if it is listed.
- Select a folder and filename, then confirm the save.
The Chromium implementation describes a PNG download. Some users will see only Copy Video Frame, both commands, or neither; this depends on Chrome build, rollout, page implementation and video eligibility.
Why a native frame is usually cleaner than a screenshot
- It does not include browser chrome, tabs or the desktop background.
- It avoids manually cropping a playback bar, pause icon or other controls.
- It can retain more detail than a screen capture when the source video is rendered smaller than its decoded frame.
- It is quick to paste into schoolwork, presentations, notes and image editors.
Quality still depends on the decoded stream, the player pipeline and site restrictions. A video labelled 4K does not guarantee a 4K saved image, and a clean frame is not automatically higher quality than the source.
If “Copy Video Frame” is missing
Right-click the actual video
Right-clicking a surrounding page, iframe container, thumbnail, overlay or control can produce a different context menu. Click the intended player first, move over its picture area and try again.
Pause before opening the menu
Pausing identifies the target frame and can give Chrome time to expose a readable frame.

Open the video separately
Some sites wrap players in several layers. If the site offers an option to open the video in a new tab, try that page and right-click the native player.
Update Chrome
Google documented the feature in 2023, around the Chrome 116 era. Check Chrome menu → Help → About Google Chrome, install any update and relaunch when prompted.
Test an ordinary HTML5 video
A plain, unprotected video helps distinguish a page-specific problem from a browser problem. Chromium’s newer media-controls work checks whether a frame is readable and whether the content is encrypted: Chromium media-controls change.

If Chrome exposes no frame command, use your operating system’s screenshot tool and crop the result. That captures displayed screen pixels rather than extracting the video’s native frame.
Use DevTools for page captures
For a viewport or whole-page image, open DevTools and choose More options → Capture screenshot or Capture full size screenshot. These tools capture the page composition, not necessarily the video frame: Chrome DevTools documentation.

Protected and custom video limitations
Chrome may hide the command or produce a black or blank result when media is DRM-protected, encrypted or otherwise unreadable to the browser. The cited Chromium Global Media Controls implementation shows a save button only when a saveable frame exists, the content is not protected, the frame is readable and there is a single eligible player. Streaming services can change their players, so no service should be treated as universally supported or unsupported without current testing.
A video can be visibly playing while still preventing direct frame extraction. Multiple players on one page, canvas-based players and unusual custom controls can also prevent the native menu from appearing.
Get the best available still
- Pause precisely and wait for the desired frame to render.
- Select the highest quality stream the player offers when practical, understanding that quality changes may buffer and do not force immediate decoding.
- Use native copying or saving instead of a screen capture when you want to avoid scaling and controls.
- Check the resulting image dimensions in your editor; source resolution, decoded stream quality and player scaling determine the result.

Optional extensions
Chrome’s built-in command is sufficient for ordinary frame grabs and requires no purchase or installation. If it is unavailable or you need repeated captures, an extension may help:
- Video Screenshot — Chrome Web Store offers an alternative capture workflow. Review its permissions before installing.
- Screenshot for YouTube & Other Video Services is aimed at supported video services. Its listing notes that some copy-protected video may produce a blank frame.
Extensions are not required for the normal workflow, and developer claims about DRM, resolution or broad site support should not be treated as guarantees.
Desktop availability and mobile expectations
The documented right-click workflow is for desktop Chrome. Google’s announcement dates the feature to August 31, 2023, while the exact menu exposure can change across releases. The available authoritative material does not establish the same command on Chrome for Android or iPhone, so do not assume mobile support.

Chrome’s technical ability to copy a frame does not grant permission to republish it. Copyright, licensing, platform terms and fair-use rules vary by country and use. Personal study, criticism, accessibility and research can differ legally from public redistribution. Avoid capturing private calls, confidential dashboards or personally identifiable information.

Does Chrome save the image automatically when I choose Copy Video Frame?
No. Copy Video Frame places the still image on the clipboard. Paste it into an image-capable app, or use Save video frame as when that command is available.
Where does Copy Video Frame put the image?
It puts image data on the system clipboard, not in a downloads folder.
Why is Copy Video Frame missing?
The right-click may not be on the video, Chrome may need updating, the player may be custom or protected, or the current page and build may not expose the command.
Does the feature work on Android or iPhone?
The documented workflow covers desktop Chrome. Mobile availability is not established by the cited official material.

Does it capture subtitles?
Native frame extraction captures the video frame itself. Subtitles or other overlays may be separate player or webpage layers, so use a visible-pixel screenshot if those elements must appear.
Can it capture a DRM-protected movie?
It may be unavailable or return a blank result because protected or encrypted media can block readable frame extraction.
Is the result always the video’s original resolution?
No guarantee applies to every stream. Chromium documented original-resolution behavior in manual tests, but the result depends on the decoded stream, player and site.
What is the difference between Copy Video Frame and Save video frame as?
Copy Video Frame sends the frame to the clipboard; Save video frame as downloads it, generally as a PNG in the documented Chromium implementation.
