The Windows Win+X Power User Menu is a shortcut menu for system-management, troubleshooting, configuration, and power-session tools. Press Windows + X or right-click Start to open it. It is not the same as the Start menu’s Power button: Win+X focuses on tools such as Device Manager, Disk Management, Event Viewer, Task Manager, Computer Management, and Terminal, while Start > Power focuses on Sleep, Shut down, and Restart.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 both have the menu, but labels and destinations vary by release, edition, policy, hardware, and installed components.
How to open the Win+X menu
- Press Windows + X.
- Right-click the Start button.
- On a compatible touchscreen, press and hold Start.
- Use the keyboard’s Application/Menu key where it opens the Start context menu; then move with the arrow keys.
Microsoft documents the first two methods at Microsoft’s Windows-X menu overview.
What appears in the menu?
There is no single permanent list. Windows version, feature updates, Home/Pro/Enterprise edition, laptop hardware, enterprise policy, Terminal settings, and shell customizers can change entries. Common groups include:

Win+X options explained
| Entry | Useful for | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Installed apps / Apps and Features | Viewing, modifying, or uninstalling software | Label and Settings destination differ by Windows release. |
| Mobility Center | Brightness, display connection, battery, volume, and presentation controls | Most useful on portable PCs; may be unavailable on desktops. |
| Power Options | Power plans, sleep, and related behavior | Some controls now appear in Settings. |
| Event Viewer | Application, security, setup, and system logs | An error is evidence to correlate, not proof of the root cause. |
| System | Windows, device, and system information | Windows 11 may redirect to Settings. |
| Device Manager | Hardware status, drivers, and device errors | Changes may require elevation. |
| Network Connections | Adapters and connection properties | Disabling an adapter can disconnect the PC. |
| Disk Management | Initializing disks, creating/formatting volumes, drive letters, and resizing | Formatting or deleting the wrong volume can destroy data. |
| Computer Management | One console for disks, logs, Services, shared folders, and available local-user tools | Snap-ins depend on edition and permissions. |
| Task Manager | Processes, performance, startup apps, and users | Ending the wrong process can lose work or destabilize an app. |
| Terminal, PowerShell, or Command Prompt | Commands, scripts, and administration | “Admin” launches an elevated process after UAC approval; inspect commands first. |
| Settings, File Explorer, Search, and Run | Configuration, files, finding items, and launching commands | Destinations and results depend on Windows configuration. |
| Shut down or sign out | Sleep, shutdown, restart, sign-out, or user switching | Save work before using session controls. |

The most useful troubleshooting routes
Hardware and drivers
Open Device Manager to inspect device status, driver errors, and hardware categories. A warning icon identifies a device requiring investigation; it does not by itself identify the correct fix.

Windows 10 versus Windows 11
Windows 11 commonly shows Windows Terminal or Windows Terminal (Admin) where older Windows 10 installations showed PowerShell or Command Prompt. After the Windows 11 22H2-era October 2022 update, Microsoft made Windows Terminal the default host for console applications unless changed by the user or administrator. This does not mean PowerShell was removed: PowerShell and Command Prompt are shells, while Windows Terminal is the host that can contain them and other profiles. See Microsoft’s command-line guidance.
Windows 10 still has Win+X, but ordinary support ended on October 14, 2025, including free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes. See Microsoft’s support information.

Keyboard navigation and accessibility
Press Win + X, use the Arrow keys, press Enter to launch, and press Esc to close. Legacy Windows 10 letter-key sequences and underlined access keys are not reliable guarantees on current Windows 11 builds; reports document changed or inconsistent behavior at Microsoft Tech Community and this related discussion.

An entry marked (Admin) requests elevation through User Account Control. A standard account needs an administrator credential or approval. Opening an unmarked item does not make it administrative, and an elevated token still operates under account policy, ownership, and service permissions. Windows Terminal’s FAQ confirms the Win+X Windows Terminal (Admin) route: Microsoft Terminal FAQ.

Can the menu be customized?
Windows provides no ordinary Settings page for adding, removing, or rearranging Win+X entries. Shortcuts are stored in the user profile, but manual replacement and third-party editors are unsupported and can break after updates. Reports of custom links disappearing after updates appear at Microsoft Tech Community.
If you nevertheless test an advanced customization, create a restore point or backup, preserve the original shortcuts, verify the publisher and digital signature of any download, and expect to undo the change after a feature update. Do not use registry scripts or random shortcut bundles as a default fix.
Quick Recap
Fix a missing, empty, or unresponsive menu
- Test both opening methods: try Win+X and right-click Start. If only one fails, check keyboard hardware, remapping software, or shell behavior.
- Restart Explorer: press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select Windows Explorer in Task Manager, and choose Restart.
- Review customizations: restore backed-up shortcuts rather than deleting the WinX folder blindly.
- Repair Windows files: open an elevated Terminal, PowerShell, or Command Prompt and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthsfc /scannow
These repair component and system-file problems; Microsoft does not describe them as a universal Win+X-specific repair. - Check updates and policy: enterprise restrictions, kiosk settings, debloat scripts, shell replacements, and tuning utilities can remove or alter entries.
- Test a clean account: different behavior can separate per-user shortcut corruption from a system-wide issue.
- Use direct commands: launch the required MMC console from Run while the menu is unavailable.
Choose the best route for the task
- Use Win+X for fast access to administrative and troubleshooting tools.
- Use Search when you know the tool’s name or Microsoft has moved a control to Settings.
- Use Run when you know the exact command, need elevation, or the menu is broken.
- Use Settings for modern personalization, updates, privacy, Bluetooth, display, accounts, and network configuration.
- Use Terminal or PowerShell for repeatable commands, scripts, and automation.
- Use Computer Management when several MMC snap-ins are needed together.
Safety checklist
- Verify the disk and volume before formatting, deleting, initializing, or changing partitions.
- Read elevated commands before approving UAC.
- Do not treat Event Viewer errors as confirmed causes without correlating timing and symptoms.
- Save work before ending processes or signing out.
- Back up original WinX shortcuts before any manual change.
- Do not copy registry scripts or replacement shortcut bundles from untrusted forums.
