Maturity ratings and blocked titles control what appears on a profile; a Profile Lock controls who can open it. Configure both layers so a child cannot simply switch to an unrestricted profile.
Netflix’s labels can differ by country, language, device, app version, and account state. The steps below use the current Netflix web and mobile paths.
What each Netflix control does

A Profile Lock alone does not restrict mature viewing through another unlocked profile. Netflix’s overview of these controls is at Netflix Help.
Before you start
- Have access to the Netflix account and its password, or to the account email address or phone for identity verification.
- Use a web browser for maturity and title changes on a Kids profile; Netflix says those Kids controls must be edited on the web.
- Protect every adult profile that children can select, especially the main profile.
- Keep the Netflix account password private. Anyone who knows it may be able to change parental controls.
Netflix supports up to five profiles on an account, although extra-member accounts have different limits. Profiles are supported on devices made after 2013; older hardware may not support every prompt or control (Netflix profile limits).

Create a Netflix Kids profile
- Open Manage Profiles in Netflix.
- Select Add Profile.
- Enter the child’s name.
- Choose For Kids, Kids Profile, or Kid, depending on the device’s wording.
- Select Continue or Save.
The profile icon receives a Kids logo. The interface is simplified, account settings are restricted, an email address cannot be added, and Netflix Games are not shown. The main profile cannot be converted into a Kids profile. If creation fails on a mobile browser or device, use Netflix.com on a computer. See Netflix’s Kids-profile instructions.
Add a Profile Lock PIN
In a web browser
- Open Netflix and go to the Account page.
- Select Profiles, then choose the profile.
- Select Profile Lock.
- Verify your identity with the account password or a code sent by email or text.
- Select Create a Profile Lock.
- Enter four digits and select Save PIN.
A lock icon appears on the profile-selection screen. For the main profile, you can also enable Require PIN to add new profiles before saving.
In the Netflix mobile app
- Open Netflix and tap My Netflix in the lower-right corner.
- Tap the profile name at the top, then Manage Profiles.
- Select the profile and tap Profile Lock.
- Choose Create a Profile Lock and verify the account password.
- Enter four digits.
If the account has no password, Netflix says you may need to use the browser method. Extra-member accounts have one profile and cannot use a Profile Lock (Profile Lock help).
Require a PIN before anyone adds a profile
This closes a common workaround: creating a new, unrestricted profile.

- First add a Profile Lock PIN to the main profile.
- In a browser, open the Netflix Account page.
- Select Profiles, choose the main profile, and select Profile Lock.
- Verify your identity.
- Check Require PIN to add new profiles, then select Save PIN.
Netflix makes this option available only on the main profile—the profile shown at the far left or upper-left when Netflix asks who is watching (Netflix’s profile-creation PIN instructions).
Set a maturity rating
Browser
- Open the Netflix Account page.
- Select Profiles, then Adjust parental controls.
- Choose the profile and verify your identity with the password or an email/text code.
- Set the desired maturity level and select Save.
Android, iPhone, or iPad
- Open Netflix and tap My Netflix.
- Tap the profile name, then Manage Profiles.
- Choose the profile and tap Viewing Restrictions.
- Tap Maturity Rating, verify the account password, select the level, and save.
Netflix requires a browser to edit maturity settings for a Kids profile. Ratings can vary by country or region because Netflix may use local classification systems as well as its own (maturity and title restrictions; regional ratings). Netflix games follow the profile’s maturity setting.
Block a specific show or movie
Browser
- Go to the Netflix Account page and select Profiles.
- Choose Adjust parental controls, select the profile, and verify your identity.
- Under Title Restrictions, type the show or movie name.
- Select the title and choose Save.
Mobile app
- Tap My Netflix, the profile name, and Manage Profiles.
- Choose the profile and tap Viewing Restrictions.
- Tap Block Titles, verify your identity, search, and select the title.
Blocking titles for a Kids profile must be done in a web browser. Netflix displays only the first 100 blocked titles in the visible list, but additional titles can still be blocked and found by searching.
A strong household configuration
- Create a separate profile for each child or teen.
- Use the Kids experience when its simpler interface and catalog fit the child.
- Set a profile-specific maturity level.
- Block individual titles that need a stricter decision.
- Lock the main profile and every other adult profile children can see.
- Enable Require PIN to add new profiles on the main profile.
- Do not share the Netflix account password.
- After saving changes, switch profiles or sign out and back in on each device.
A standard profile with a child maturity rating is more customizable than the Kids experience; the Kids experience is more restrictive but less flexible.

Edit, remove, or recover a PIN
Open the profile’s Profile Lock setting and choose Edit PIN to change it, or Delete Profile Lock to remove it. Netflix will request the current PIN or another identity-verification method. If you forget it, select Forgot PIN? or use the account page to follow the recovery, edit, or removal process (Netflix PIN support).
Fix PIN and parental-control problems
The television does not ask for a PIN
Some older devices cannot request the PIN when someone enters a locked profile. Netflix may still request it before playback. This can be a device limitation rather than a failed setup (Netflix troubleshooting).
The browser opens the previous profile
Some browsers automatically reopen the last-used profile. Sign out before testing, or clear Netflix-related browser cookies.
New settings are not visible
Switch to another profile and back, or sign out of Netflix on the device and sign in again. This refreshes profile locks, Kids settings, maturity limits, title restrictions, and the profile-creation PIN.

Kids restrictions are missing in the app
Use a web browser. Netflix specifically requires the web for changing a Kids profile’s maturity settings and blocked titles.
The account is an extra-member account
Netflix says an extra-member account has one profile and cannot have a Profile Lock, so do not assume every account type supports every control.
A restricted title still appears
- Confirm the viewer is using the intended profile.
- Check that the restriction was saved and refresh the device.
- Make sure the title is not being watched through another profile.
- Check whether the account still uses an older account-level control arrangement.
- Remember that regional ratings and title metadata can change.
Legacy account-wide PIN controls
Older Netflix accounts may still use a single account-level parental-controls PIN. Netflix offers a move to individualized profile controls; once the account is updated, Netflix says the old account PIN is removed and the change cannot be reversed to the previous single-PIN system (legacy parental controls).
What these controls cannot do
Netflix filters titles according to its maturity classifications and your selected blocks; it does not guarantee that every family will agree with every classification. Profile controls also do not restrict other streaming apps, websites, purchases, or device usage times. Use the parental-control features on the television, streaming box, phone, tablet, operating system, or app store as a separate layer when those restrictions are required. They cannot replace supervision, and anyone who knows the account password may be able to change Netflix settings.
