If your laptop loses a lot of charge or gets hot while asleep, it probably is not spending enough time in a low-power state—or it may have a battery or hardware problem. Disconnect accessories and use Hibernate or Shut down before putting a hot laptop in a bag. Then compare battery loss and temperature across a controlled Sleep test and check which activity or device is keeping it awake.
When sleep drain and heat are abnormal
A small charge drop over several hours can be normal; the amount varies with battery age, connected devices, network settings, and the laptop’s sleep design. A large overnight loss, a battery that is dead after a day or two, fans running during Sleep, or a warm or hot chassis is a stronger warning. Heat matters independently of the percentage: it can mean the system is active, waking repeatedly, charging under load, or unable to enter deep idle.
Compare like with like: record the charge and temperature after 30–60 minutes and again after several hours, then compare Sleep with Hibernate, battery power with AC, and tests with accessories connected versus disconnected. Do not assume a dark screen means the computer is asleep; screen-off, Sleep, Hibernate, and Shut down are different states. A silent fan also does not rule out activity, especially if heat is trapped in a bag.
If the laptop is hot right now
- Unplug the charger and disconnect docks, USB devices, external drives, and displays.
- If the computer responds, wake it and choose Start > Power > Shut down.
- Set it on a hard, ventilated surface, not a bed, sofa, or inside a bag.
- If it will not respond and is becoming dangerously hot, holding the power button to force it off is a last resort; unsaved work may be lost.
Do not use a laptop with a visibly swollen, damaged, leaking, smoking, or unusually hot battery, and do not open or puncture an internal battery. Arrange manufacturer or qualified repair service. Heat that returns while the computer is shut down also warrants service rather than more sleep-setting experiments.

Windows: find out which sleep state the laptop uses
Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run:
powercfg /a- Standby (S0 Low Power Idle) means the laptop uses Modern Standby. It maintains a low-power version of the running state and can permit selected background activity.
- Standby (S3) means traditional Sleep, in which most hardware is suspended.
Which states are available depends on the platform and firmware. A machine that offers only S0 may not support S3, and a registry change cannot reliably add a state the hardware does not expose. Microsoft describes Modern Standby’s deep runtime idle platform state, or DRIPS, and how SleepStudy assesses it in its Modern Standby SleepStudy documentation.
Windows: measure before changing settings
Use an elevated Command Prompt for these built-in reports. Microsoft documents the commands and their options in Powercfg command-line options.
Check Modern Standby sessions
powercfg /sleepstudyOpen the generated Sleepstudy-report.html. It lists Modern Standby sessions, active and idle time, estimated energy use, drain rate, and contributors. Look across more than one session for high drain, repeated short active periods, low % Low Power State Time (low DRIPS), or the same network, audio, display, storage, or driver activity appearing repeatedly. Sessions longer than an hour are more representative; sessions shorter than ten minutes are not included in the normal report.
Microsoft’s legacy SleepStudy color guidance treats a drain rate of 1% per hour or more as poor and rates below 0.333% per hour as consistent with substantially longer theoretical standby life. These are diagnostic reference points for Modern Standby, not a universal consumer standard or a guarantee for a particular battery. The report’s energy calculation also differs between AC and battery sessions; compare battery-powered tests when assessing battery loss.

Check battery capacity
powercfg /batteryreportOpen the generated HTML report and compare Design Capacity with Full Charge Capacity, plus recent usage and capacity history. A substantial gap indicates reduced capacity, but it does not by itself explain why the laptop heats up during Sleep. Battery gauges are estimates, so repeat tests and look for a consistent pattern rather than treating one percentage reading as definitive.
Check requests and wake events
powercfg /requests
powercfg /waketimers
powercfg /lastwake/requests can identify applications, drivers, services, or audio/video activity currently preventing lower-power behavior. /waketimers lists scheduled wake events; a timer can be legitimate, so investigate only recurring or unnecessary events. /lastwake reports the most recent wake source when Windows can identify one, but may provide limited or inconclusive information.
Run an energy diagnostic
powercfg /energy /duration 120Run this while the laptop is idle and connected to AC power. The command creates an HTML report, commonly named energy-report.html, that can flag power-management problems. It is not a direct measurement of overnight Sleep drain.
Windows: apply the least disruptive fixes
Use Hibernate for long rests or transport
Hibernate saves the current session to storage and powers the computer down more completely than Sleep. Resuming takes longer and uses storage space, but it is a practical choice for overnight storage or carrying the laptop. Select Start > Power > Hibernate if available. To enable Hibernate from an elevated Command Prompt, run:

powercfg /hibernate onThen check the power menu and lid-action options. For model-specific Modern Standby troubleshooting, Dell also documents using Hibernate as a lower-power alternative in its sleep-mode guidance. Avoid registry hacks intended to force S3: they may be unsupported, ineffective, or cause resume failures.
Set lid and timeout behavior
On Windows 11, start at Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep & hibernate timeouts. For lid behavior, open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does. Consider setting the lid to Hibernate on battery, particularly for transport. Menu options vary by device and power model; Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guide covers the available timeout controls.
Isolate devices and background activity
Test Sleep with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off, external monitors disconnected, and USB hubs, mice, keyboards, storage, card readers, and docks removed. Close network shares, remote-access tools, video calls, virtual machines, game launchers, cloud-sync and backup software, and browser tabs running video, downloads, WebRTC, or device controls. Let Windows Update and manufacturer update utilities finish before testing.
If the problem disappears, reconnect one device or reopen one service at a time. That identifies the trigger more reliably than changing several settings together. Modern Standby can allow selected devices and network functions to wake the system. Microsoft lists possible wake sources and notes that Windows 11 version 24H2 added behavior intended to disable most wake sources when excessive drain is detected; this does not rule out firmware, driver, or hardware problems. Review device wake permissions
In Device Manager, inspect network adapters and USB controllers. Where a driver provides a Power Management tab, test clearing Allow this device to wake the computer or disabling wake-on-magic-packet and wake-on-pattern features. Some drivers do not expose these controls, and labels vary. If the manufacturer offers a setting for network connectivity during standby, test disabling it as well.
Update or roll back model-specific software
Use the laptop maker’s support page for the exact model. Prioritize BIOS/UEFI firmware, chipset and platform-management drivers, graphics, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, and storage or USB/Thunderbolt controller drivers, then apply Windows updates. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, including its power requirements for firmware updates; check release notes and have a recovery plan. If the trouble began immediately after a driver or BIOS update, consider only the manufacturer-approved rollback path.
A missing or defective driver can prevent DRIPS. Microsoft’s SleepStudy troubleshooting examples include driver-related cases where the platform fails to reach low-power residency.

Review sleep and network options
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery > Options. For testing, turn off Enable Power Nap and Wake for network access, especially on battery power. These features permit maintenance or network availability during Sleep, so disabling them can reduce background convenience. Depending on macOS and model, also review Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off. Apple describes these controls in its Battery settings guide.

Find apps that prevent sleep
Open Activity Monitor > Energy. Check Energy Impact, 12 hr Power, Preventing Sleep, and whether an app requires the high-performance graphics processor. Quit or update an app that is preventing sleep or consuming unusually high energy. See Apple’s Activity Monitor Energy pane guide.
Test without accessories and check battery health
Disconnect nonessential USB, Thunderbolt, storage, display, and dock accessories and retest. Apple lists malfunctioning connected storage and peripherals among possible causes of sleep or wake problems in its Mac sleep and wake troubleshooting guide.
Open System Settings > Battery and review Battery Health and Maximum Capacity. “Service Recommended” or severe capacity loss supports a battery-service diagnosis, but a healthy battery does not rule out an app or peripheral preventing sleep. Capacity declines with chemical age, and temperature history affects aging. Apple says some Mac notebooks are designed to retain up to 80% of original capacity at their maximum cycle count under normal conditions; that is a design/service reference, not a universal replacement threshold. Restart and escalate when needed
Restart and retest. On Apple-silicon Macs, a normal restart replaces the former SMC-reset workflow. On Intel Macs, Apple’s power troubleshooting may include an SMC reset, but the procedure depends on the model. If heat persists during sleep with accessories removed and sleep-time features disabled, run Apple Diagnostics and arrange service.
Verify that a fix worked
Change one meaningful setting or device at a time, then compare against a baseline. Microsoft says Modern Standby sessions longer than an hour are more representative in SleepStudy. Use the same test duration and similar starting charge so comparisons are useful.
- Record starting battery percentage, time, power source, and connected accessories.
- Enter Sleep for at least an hour; note warmth, fan behavior, and ending percentage.
- For Windows Modern Standby, generate SleepStudy again and compare low-power-state time, active periods, drain rate, and recurring contributors.
- Repeat after the change. A credible fix improves both battery loss and heat, not just one reading.
When battery or hardware service is more likely
Battery age can explain shorter runtime or a changing percentage, but it does not alone explain a hot processor or chassis during Sleep. If charge falls rapidly even after a clean Shut down, investigate battery health, firmware, charging circuitry, or other hardware rather than ordinary Sleep activity. If the laptop becomes hot while shut down, or heat returns after accessories and background activity have been ruled out, stop troubleshooting and contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider.
