What was Tongyi Qianwen?
Tongyi Qianwen was Alibaba Cloud’s original branding for a generative artificial-intelligence foundation model. A foundation model supplies the language and reasoning capabilities that can be built into chatbots, workplace software, business applications and developer tools. It is different from a single consumer app: the same underlying model can be offered through an API, embedded in Alibaba products or adapted into a company-specific system.
Alibaba’s announcement positioned the model for enterprise customers and developers. Customers could use Alibaba Cloud infrastructure to create customized large language models and add generative-AI features to their own applications. The launch announcement is archived by Alibaba at Alibaba Group.
What Alibaba announced on April 11, 2023
Alibaba Cloud introduced Tongyi Qianwen at its cloud summit in Beijing. The company said it would be integrated progressively into Alibaba’s business applications and made available to enterprise users and developers. Initial API access was offered for beta testing and registration in China, with wider access described as forthcoming.

DingTalk was an early target
Alibaba identified DingTalk, its workplace collaboration platform, as an early integration area. Demonstrated or planned uses included turning meetings into summaries and helping users write business material. These were integration plans and product capabilities described around the launch, not evidence that every Alibaba application received the model at once. Why was it called a ChatGPT rival?
ChatGPT had made conversational generative AI a mainstream product category after its public release in late 2022. Alibaba’s model could generate and transform text, support conversational interfaces and power business software, so media outlets used “ChatGPT rival” as shorthand. Reuters described it as Alibaba’s version of the technology behind ChatGPT (Reuters coverage).

The comparison should not be read as proof that the two systems had identical models, training data, benchmarks, safety rules or availability. Alibaba’s initial strategy emphasized enterprise APIs, cloud infrastructure and integration with its own ecosystem, whereas ChatGPT was first encountered mainly as a direct public chatbot. China’s technology companies, including Baidu and SenseTime, were also introducing competing generative-AI systems while Chinese authorities were developing rules for generative-AI services.
How Tongyi Qianwen became Qwen
“Tongyi Qianwen” is the historical name associated with the 2023 announcement. Alibaba subsequently made Qwen the more prominent global name for a continuing family of models and products. Qwen is not one fixed chatbot: the family includes general language models, multimodal and coding models, speech systems, agentic tools, hosted services and open-weight releases.

Qwen App and Qwen Studio provide ready-to-use conversational access where offered. Features, account requirements, phone verification, language quality and regional availability can differ. The official platform entry point is qwen.ai.
Hosted APIs
Alibaba Cloud Model Studio provides hosted inference for Qwen language, multimodal, coding and other specialized models. It is aimed at developers who want an API rather than a consumer subscription. Model catalogs, regions, quotas, context limits and data-handling terms vary.

Open-weight models
Developers can find Qwen releases in the Qwen Hugging Face collection and Alibaba’s ModelScope ecosystem. Downloadable weights are not the same as a hosted chatbot: self-hosting may require suitable GPUs, quantization, an inference engine, monitoring, security controls and a license review. Each release has its own terms; “open source” should not be assumed to mean unrestricted commercial use.

Is Qwen a real alternative to ChatGPT?
That depends on the job and the user’s location. A useful comparison checks:
- Access: whether the desired app or API is available in the user’s country.
- Language and coding: performance in the languages, frameworks and document types that matter to the user.
- Features: browsing, files, images, speech, tool calling, structured output and agent workflows.
- Deployment: hosted convenience versus downloadable weights and self-managed infrastructure.
- Privacy and compliance: data residency, retention, training policies and contractual commitments.
- Economics: token rates, quotas, latency, dedicated capacity and operational costs.
- Ecosystem: Alibaba commerce, workplace, payments and cloud integrations versus another provider’s applications.
Neither the 2023 announcement nor the current product family establishes a universal winner. Large language models can hallucinate, misunderstand instructions and produce outdated or unsafe material; human review remains necessary for legal, medical, financial, security and business-critical work.
