Press Windows key + X, or right-click Start, to open the Win+X menu—called the Quick Link menu in Microsoft’s documentation. It gives you fast access to tools such as Task Manager, Device Manager, Disk Management, Settings, and command-line options. The exact entries and labels vary by Windows version, language, edition, and device.
Open and navigate the Win+X menu
- Press and hold the Windows logo key, then press X. Release both keys. The menu appears near Start.
- Alternatively, right-click the Start button. On a touchscreen, press and hold Start if your device supports that gesture. Microsoft identifies both methods as opening the same menu: Windows keyboard shortcuts.
- Click an entry, or use the Up Arrow and Down Arrow keys to select one and press Enter. Press Esc to close the menu.
Use the visible labels rather than counting on a letter sequence after Win+X. Access keys can differ by Windows build, menu label, and language. If you use a screen reader, navigate by focus and the announced control names rather than undocumented letter shortcuts.
What the menu entries do
This is a practical guide to entries commonly found in Windows 10 and Windows 11, not a guaranteed inventory. Microsoft does not publish one permanent catalog for every release. Some entries may be absent, renamed, redirected to Settings, or unavailable on particular hardware.
| Entry (common labels) | What it does | Important limitation or risk |
|---|---|---|
| Installed apps / Apps and Features | Opens the area for viewing, modifying, repairing, or uninstalling apps. | Windows 11 commonly says Installed apps; Windows 10 commonly says Apps and Features. The destination can vary. |
| Mobility Center | Offers laptop-oriented controls such as brightness, battery status, display connection, sync, and presentation settings. | May be unavailable on desktop PCs or depending on hardware and edition. |
| Power Options | Provides access to power plans and related sleep, battery, and power settings. | Some controls in modern Windows versions may redirect to Settings. |
| Event Viewer | Displays logs for events such as application errors, system problems, setup, and security activity; useful when investigating crashes, service failures, or startup issues. | A log entry is evidence to interpret, not necessarily a diagnosis by itself. |
| System / About | Shows device and Windows information. | Current Windows 11 may open Settings > System > About; older releases may use a classic Control Panel page. |
| Device Manager | Lists detected hardware and drivers. You can inspect device status and error codes or update, roll back, disable, or uninstall a driver. | Disabling or removing the wrong device or driver can disrupt storage, networking, graphics, or input. |
| Disk Management | Manages disks and volumes, including initializing disks, creating or deleting partitions, formatting, changing drive letters, and some resize operations. | Deleting, initializing, or formatting the wrong disk or volume can make data inaccessible. Identify the disk carefully and back up important files before changing it. |
| Computer Management | Groups administrative tools such as disk management, services, devices, shared folders, and user management. | Some functions are advanced or require administrator permissions. |
| Terminal / Windows PowerShell / Command Prompt | Opens a command-line environment. PowerShell is a scripting and automation shell; Command Prompt is the older command interpreter. | Terminal is the host application, not a shell. An elevated shell can change system-wide settings or damage files and Windows if commands are used incorrectly. |
| Task Manager | Shows running apps and processes, resource use, startup apps, users, and services. It can help investigate a slow or unresponsive PC. | Ending a task can lose unsaved work; ending a critical Windows process can cause instability or sign-out behavior. |
| Settings | Opens the modern Windows configuration app. | Specialized administrative utilities and some legacy Control Panel components remain separate. |
| File Explorer | Opens the file and folder manager. | The direct keyboard alternative is Windows key + E, as documented in File Explorer in Windows. |
| Search | Opens Windows Search, which can find settings and tools by name. | Results may vary with indexing, account setup, and Windows version. |
| Run | Opens a dialog for entering application names, commands, and management-console files. | Use commands you recognize or have verified. |
| Shut down or sign out | Usually opens choices such as sign out, sleep, shut down, or restart. | Available choices can depend on device capabilities, policy, updates, and power settings. Save work before signing out or shutting down. |
| Desktop | Minimizes or restores open windows to show the desktop. | It does not close the applications. |
Choose a tool for the problem you have
- The PC is slow: Open Task Manager and inspect CPU, memory, disk, network, GPU, and startup activity. Check which app or process is using resources before ending anything.
- A device is missing or malfunctioning: Open Device Manager, find the device, and inspect its status and any error code. Avoid disabling or uninstalling it unless you understand the likely effect.
- Windows crashed or a service failed: Open Event Viewer and look for events near the time of the problem. Microsoft documents the Run command
eventvwr.mscas another way to open it. - A drive is missing or newly installed: Use Disk Management to check whether Windows sees the disk and how its volumes are configured. Do not initialize, format, delete, or resize anything until you have identified the correct disk and protected important data.
- You need a specific management console: Open Run and enter
eventvwr.mscfor Event Viewer orcompmgmt.mscfor Computer Management. Microsoft lists both commands in its overview of Windows system configuration tools. - You need an administrator command line: Choose the entry labeled Terminal (Admin) or, on some systems, Windows PowerShell (Admin). Approve the User Account Control (UAC) prompt or supply an administrator account if requested. Elevation applies to that process; it does not permanently make your account an administrator. Use it only for tasks that require it.
- You want routine configuration or files: Choose Settings for Windows configuration or File Explorer for folders and drives. File Explorer also opens with Windows key + E.
Understand Terminal, PowerShell, and Command Prompt
In Windows 11 version 22H2 and later configurations covered by Microsoft’s documentation, Windows Terminal is the default host for command-line applications. That changes the window in which a shell appears; it does not mean PowerShell and Command Prompt are the same thing or that PowerShell has been replaced. A Terminal window can run a PowerShell or Command Prompt profile. See Microsoft’s Command Prompt and Windows PowerShell guidance.

If you prefer a different host, Microsoft documents settings for changing the default terminal host in Settings > System > Advanced > Terminal, where available, or in Windows Terminal’s startup options. Labels and availability can differ by release.
Why the menu differs between Windows 10 and 11
Windows 10 and Windows 11 both include the shortcut, but their menus are not identical. Apps and Features may be labeled Installed apps, command-line entries may use Terminal where older menus used PowerShell or Command Prompt, and some system destinations lead to Settings instead of a classic Control Panel page. Hardware, edition, language, updates, and administrative policy can also affect what you see. The visible menu on your PC is the reliable guide to its available entries.

The Win+X shortcut still works in Windows 10, but that is separate from whether the operating system receives standard support. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; consult its Windows keyboard tips and support information for the stated date and support context.
Fix common Win+X problems
The shortcut does nothing
- Right-click Start to check whether the menu itself opens.
- Try another Windows-key shortcut, such as Windows key + E. If that also fails, a keyboard utility, gaming mode, policy, or key problem may be involved.
- If Start or the desktop shell is unresponsive, open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, locate Windows Explorer, and choose Restart if available. Save work first; restarting Explorer refreshes the shell and may briefly close or redraw taskbar and File Explorer windows.
- Restart Windows. If the problem remains, temporarily disable third-party Start-menu or shell-modification software, then test another keyboard or the On-Screen Keyboard.
- On a work- or school-managed PC, ask the administrator whether shortcuts or tools are restricted.
An entry is missing
It may have been renamed, omitted in your version or edition, excluded because of hardware, affected by policy, or removed by a system modification. Search for the tool by name, use a documented Run command when available, or check whether the relevant application or Windows feature is installed. Avoid random “Win+X menu fixer” downloads and do not copy shortcut files from an unrelated Windows build without a backup and a recovery plan.

An item appears but will not launch
Try finding the same tool through Search or Run. If a documented command such as eventvwr.msc or compmgmt.msc also fails, the utility may be damaged, blocked by policy, or affected by a system problem. Restart Explorer and install available Windows updates. On a managed PC, contact IT rather than changing policy or registry entries.
The Admin entry is absent or elevation fails
The account may lack administrator credentials, UAC or organizational policy may restrict elevation, or the Windows build may use a different label. An administrator option requests permission for that particular process; it does not bypass an organization’s restrictions or grant lasting privileges.

Can you customize the Win+X menu?
Windows does not provide a simple official Settings page for rearranging the menu. Its entries can differ due to Windows changes, hardware, and policy; avoid treating third-party menu-editing utilities as necessary or risk-free. If your goal is faster keyboard access rather than changing Win+X itself, Microsoft’s free, open-source PowerToys includes productivity utilities such as Shortcut Guide.
