LastPass Free Subscription Changes: What “One Device Type” Means in 2026

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

LastPass Free still exists, but it no longer syncs across computer and mobile categories. Since March 16, 2021, a Free account has allowed unlimited devices of one type only: Computer or Mobile. Using both categories requires Premium or Families. LastPass says this restriction does not delete your vault, although it can block access from the other category.

The current LastPass Free rule

“One device type” does not mean one physical device. It means you can use LastPass on as many devices as you like inside one category:

Active Free category What you can use What is restricted
Computer Windows, macOS and Linux desktops or laptops; Windows tablets; Chromebooks using the browser extension Phones, tablets and other Mobile-category app access
Mobile iPhone and Android phones; smartwatches; iPads and Android tablets; Chromebooks using the LastPass Password Manager app Desktop and laptop access and other Computer-category routes

The policy began on March 16, 2021 and remains described in LastPass’s Free-plan FAQ. Windows, macOS and Linux are all treated as Computer devices; the restriction is not tied to a particular operating system.

What changed in 2021

Before March 16, 2021 Free plan afterward
Free synchronization across device categories Unlimited devices within either Computer or Mobile
Cross-platform access included Computer-and-mobile access requires Premium or Families
Broader direct assistance Free users primarily receive support articles, videos and Community help

For affected accounts, the first login on or after the change could establish the active category. LastPass provided three opportunities to switch categories. That was a one-time allowance, not three switches per year; the number remaining on an individual account depends on its history. LastPass’s release notes and FAQ document the policy.

OnlyKey FIDO2 / U2F Security Key and Hardware Password Manager | Universal Two Factor Authentication | Portable Professional Grade Encryption | PGP/SSH/Yubikey OTP | Windows/Linux/Mac OS/Android
  • ✅ PROTECT ONLINE ACCOUNTS – A password manager, two-factor security key, and secure communication token in one, OnlyKey can keep your accounts safe even if your computer or a website is compromised. OnlyKey is open source, verified, and trustworthy.
  • ✅ UNIVERSALLY SUPPORTED – Works with all websites including Twitter, Facebook, GitHub, and Google. Onlykey supports multiple methods of two-factor authentication including FIDO2 / U2F, Yubico OTP, TOTP, Challenge-response.
  • ✅ PORTABLE PROTECTION – Extremely durable, waterproof, and tamper resistant design allows you to take your OnlyKey with you everywhere.
  • ✅ PIN PROTECTED – The PIN used to unlock OnlyKey is entered directly on it. This means that if this device is stolen, data remains secure, after 10 failed attempts to unlock all data is securely erased.
  • ✅ EASY LOG IN –No need to remember multiple passwords because by plugging OnlyKey to your computer, it automatically inputs your username and password. It works with Windows, Mac OS, Linux, or Chromebook, just press a button to login securely!

Chromebooks are the main edge case

The same Chromebook can count differently:

  • Browser extension: classified as Computer.
  • LastPass Password Manager app: classified as Mobile.

If your account has few or no switches left, do not test both methods casually. A login on the wrong route can trigger a switch prompt, an upgrade prompt or a restricted-vault experience.

Are your passwords deleted?

No—not because of this subscription rule. LastPass says the 2021 change leaves vault data synchronized and does not delete stored passwords or other vault information. The immediate issue is access from a non-active device category, not automatic erasure. See the company’s FAQ for that statement.

Yubico - YubiKey 5 NFC - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-A or NFC, FIDO Certified - Protect Your Online Accounts
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
  • MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
  • PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts

A failed login can have another cause: an incorrect master password, email or trusted-device verification, a broken extension, account recovery trouble or a security incident. Treat those as separate diagnoses rather than assuming every error is the Free-plan restriction.

What to do before trying another device

  1. Identify whether the account is currently operating in Computer or Mobile mode from the message or upgrade screen you see.
  2. Keep using the category that currently works until you have decided whether to upgrade or migrate.
  3. Do not spend a remaining switch merely to experiment, particularly on a Chromebook.
  4. If you are locked to the unwanted category, use LastPass’s support articles and Community, or pursue an upgrade or migration. Do not repeatedly retry logins.
  5. Do not uninstall the only working extension or app until you know the master password and have verified access to the vault.

Premium, Families or staying Free?

LastPass’s current localized pricing page still lists Free with one device type, unlimited password storage, autofill and basic functions. Because the page is localized and renders some prices dynamically, exact U.S. prices, taxes, promotional terms and renewal amounts must be checked on the U.S. checkout page when you subscribe: LastPass plan page.

Choice When it makes sense Important qualification
Stay on Free You can live entirely in Computer or entirely in Mobile mode. Cross-category synchronization remains unavailable.
Premium You want one person’s vault on both computers and phones, or value LastPass features such as emergency access, dark-web monitoring or paid support. Check the renewal price, not only an introductory offer; promotional pricing changes.
Families Several people need paid access, separate vaults and household sharing. LastPass describes six Premium accounts, each with an independent encrypted vault. It is usually poor value for a single user unless the price difference is small.

Free users primarily receive self-help and Community support; paid customers receive paid-support channels. Historical 2021 introductory prices were limited promotions and are not current renewal prices.

A separate 2026 Windows-app change

LastPass announced that the old Windows LastPass for Desktop app would no longer be supported or available for download after January 21, 2026, directing users to the newer desktop app. That retirement is a software-access change, not cancellation of the Free subscription. The browser extension and web vault are separate access methods. Details are in LastPass’s Windows desktop-app notice.

Free alternatives with cross-device access

Migration checklist: move without losing access

Migration is safer when the old vault remains available until the new one is tested.

  1. Confirm that you can unlock LastPass and know the master password.
  2. Use an available, supported export or import route. Do not assume export works in every restricted-account state; availability can depend on access to the web vault, extension or another permitted interface.
  3. Import into the destination manager and verify representative website passwords, secure notes, identities, payment cards, shared items and folders.
  4. Re-create or transfer time-based two-factor secrets where necessary, and save recovery codes outside the password manager.
  5. Check passkeys separately; they may not be included in a conventional password export.
  6. Install and test the new manager on every computer and mobile device you actually use.
  7. Only after verification, cancel LastPass renewal if desired. Do not delete the LastPass account until the replacement vault and recovery information are complete.

A quick diagnosis for “LastPass stopped working”

  • Works on computers but not phones: likely Computer mode.
  • Works on phones and tablets but not desktops: likely Mobile mode.
  • Only the old Windows desktop app fails: check the 2026 app retirement and try the current app, browser extension or web vault.
  • Nothing accepts the master password: investigate recovery, verification, extension or account-security issues independently of the subscription rule.
