Update: The Pixel 9 Pro Fold did not launch in summer 2024, but it arrived sooner than an October forecast suggested. Google announced the phone on August 13, opened preorders that day, and set its retail release for September 4, 2024. The April prediction was right about a post-summer launch, not the exact timing.
Why a summer 2024 launch looked unlikely
The first Pixel Fold was introduced at Google I/O on May 10, 2023, with preorders opening at the announcement and shipping planned for the following month. That launch made a summer unveiling for its successor seem plausible. Google’s first Pixel Fold announcement
On April 16, 2024, BGR reported that Google might call the successor the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and place it in the Pixel 9 flagship family. The name and launch placement were unconfirmed at the time; the report attributed the naming information to Android Authority sourcing. If Google treated the foldable as part of its main Pixel flagship cycle rather than as a separate product, a later launch seemed reasonable. The suggestion of an October arrival, however, was an inference from typical flagship timing—not a date announced by Google. BGR’s April 2024 report

What Google confirmed at launch
The official product name was Pixel 9 Pro Fold, confirming the earlier naming report. Google listed the launch colors as Porcelain and Obsidian and equipped the phone with its Tensor G4 processor. The design had a larger inner display and a thinner profile than the first Pixel Fold. Google later specified that it was 1.5 millimeters thinner when folded than its predecessor and 5.1 millimeters thick when open; those are Google’s measurements, not independent test results. Google’s redesign details
Launch highlights included a triple rear-camera system, Macro Focus on the upgraded ultrawide camera, and Face Unlock on both front cameras. Fold-specific tools included Split Screen, Dual Screen Google Meet, Rear Camera Selfie and Tabletop Mode. Google also promoted Pixel Screenshots, Pixel Studio, Circle to Search, Summarize and Gemini, alongside photography features such as Add Me, Best Take, Magic Editor and Video Boost. These are launch features and claims, not a finding that the Fold matched every camera or performance characteristic of the non-folding Pixel 9 Pro models. Google’s launch feature overview

What the timing meant for someone deciding whether to wait
In summer 2024, waiting made sense for buyers who specifically wanted Google’s foldable in the Pixel 9 family, its Tensor G4 platform, Pixel software features and a slimmer redesign. The date was still uncertain until Google’s August 13 announcement. Anyone who needed a foldable sooner had to consider alternatives rather than treat an unconfirmed Pixel launch window as a commitment.
The larger inner display and fold-specific multitasking features came with the complexity of a folding device. Google’s thinner design claims do not, by themselves, establish better long-term durability. This article resolves the 2024 launch forecast; it does not establish the Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s current price, stock, remaining software-support period or best value in 2026. Those details depend on current market and retailer information.
