Google Lens Brought Circle to Search–Style Visual Search to Chrome—Here’s How It Works Now

Google did not add Android’s system-level Circle to Search to desktop Chrome. On August 1, 2024, it added a Google Lens workflow that delivers a similar convenience: select an object, image, text, or region on the current webpage, search it, and ask follow-up questions without manually copying the content. Google’s current documentation still describes the feature for Chrome on Windows, Mac, Linux, and ChromeOS, although labels and result layouts vary by version, account, locale, and rollout.

What Google announced in August 2024

The Lens feature was one part of Google’s August 1, 2024 Chrome AI update, alongside Tab Compare for synthesizing products across open shopping tabs and natural-language search for browsing history. The announcement described Lens as a way to search visual content directly from a desktop webpage: Google’s announcement.

The comparison with Circle to Search is therefore about the interaction, not the product name. Android users can select content on a phone’s screen; Chrome users activate Lens from Chrome’s interface and then select content on the page.

What Chrome Lens can search

After you invoke Lens, Chrome can recognize or search:

  • A mathematical expression or another selected text region.
  • A cropped area of a page when the whole image contains distracting material.

You can then add a natural-language follow-up question. Lens may return visual matches, extracted text, ordinary Google results, an AI Overview, or an AI Mode conversation. Treat generated explanations as a convenience layer and verify important claims against the cited results and primary sources.

How to use Google Lens in desktop Chrome

Use the Chrome menu

  1. Open Chrome on Windows, Mac, Linux, or ChromeOS and go to the page containing the material.
  2. Open Chrome’s More menu.
  3. Choose Search this tab with Google Lens, Search with Google Lens, or the equivalent command shown in your build.
  4. Click an object, highlight text, or drag around a region.
  5. Review the results in the side panel when that layout is available.
  6. Type a follow-up question, select a result to open it in a new tab, or close the panel to return to the page.

Google’s current instructions and data-handling explanation are at Chrome Help.

Use the address bar

Some installations show a Google Lens icon in the address bar. Others use Ask Google about this page. Where supported, right-click the address bar and enable Always show Google Lens shortcut. These labels are not guaranteed to be identical across Chrome releases or locales.

Chrome Lens versus Android Circle to Search

Capability Android Circle to Search Google Lens in desktop Chrome
Where it starts From the phone’s system screen From Chrome’s menu, address bar, or context menu
Selection area Content across the device display Primarily the current webpage or a selected page region
Selection method Circle, highlight, or tap directly on the display Click, highlight, or drag after activating Lens
Requirement Supported Android device and Google Search experience Chrome with Google as the default search engine
Results surface Google Search and Lens experiences Usually Chrome’s side panel; newer flows can use a new tab, AI Overview, or AI Mode

Calling this “Circle to Search for Chrome” is understandable shorthand, but it is not technically accurate. Google’s own announcement and current help pages call the desktop feature Google Lens.

Requirements and availability in 2026

  • Google must be Chrome’s default search engine for the documented desktop workflow: Google’s requirements.
  • Google documents Lens page and region search for Windows, Mac, Linux, and ChromeOS.
  • ChromeOS also has separate screen-search and screenshot-based Lens tools: ChromeOS Help.
  • Managed browsers can restrict Lens region search, Lens Overlay, and sharing page or file content with AI integrations through enterprise policy: Chrome Enterprise policy documentation.

The feature is not tied to a universal consumer minimum such as Chrome 140. Google’s enterprise documentation discusses behavior changes for Lens Overlay in Chrome 140 and later, but that does not establish Chrome 140 as the minimum for every Lens function.

What happens to page data

Google says Chrome sends a screenshot of the page and page data to help identify selectable objects. After you make a selection, that selection is sent to Google Search. Chrome Help says this information is used for temporary processing for the specific query, is not stored beyond that processing, and that the page or image is not used to train models as a result of that Chrome Lens interaction: Chrome’s explanation.

This is distinct from Google’s broader Visual Search History setting. Eligible visual-search images can be saved in some Google services when that history is enabled, including Circle to Search on Android; that setting should not be interpreted as proof that every Chrome Lens selection is saved, nor as a guarantee that no other account, browser, or AI-mode data control applies. See Google’s Visual Search History guidance.

When Lens is more useful than typing

Use Lens when the key information is visual

  • You recognize an object but do not know its name.
  • You want visually similar products without downloading an image.
  • A product appears in a photograph or video and ordinary keywords would be vague.
  • Text is embedded in an image or screenshot.
  • You want to ask a contextual question about something visible on the page.

Use ordinary search when words are clearer

Typing is usually faster when you know the exact product name, need an official document, or require an authoritative source. Lens results can be less precise for generic objects, obscured images, screenshots, or heavily edited media, and they require an internet connection and Google services.

Use a conventional image-search workflow for whole-image matching

Lens can crop a live webpage and recognize objects or text, making it broader than a simple upload-and-match operation. A conventional image search can still be preferable when your goal is to find exact or visually similar copies of an entire image. Google documents compatible image-search methods at Google Search Help.

Troubleshooting missing or changed Lens controls

The command is missing

  1. Confirm that Google is the default search engine.
  2. Update and relaunch Chrome.
  3. Check the More menu, address bar, and image context menu for alternate labels.
  4. On a work or school device, ask whether an administrator disabled Lens region search or Lens Overlay.

Google’s policy controls are listed at Chrome Enterprise Help. Do not treat experimental chrome://flags settings as an official fix; flags are unstable and can disappear.

Results open in a new tab

Google documents side-panel results, but interface behavior can differ. A June 2026 community thread reports changed labels and new-tab behavior for some users; that is anecdotal, not a universal Google announcement: Google Chrome Help Community. Try Search this tab with Google Lens, check whether the side panel is available or pinned, and relaunch Chrome after an update.

The selection is wrong

  • Drag a tighter or wider region around the object.
  • Zoom or crop the source image before selecting.
  • Select the object rather than the surrounding page.
  • Add descriptive words in the follow-up question.
  • Switch to an ordinary text query when the object is ambiguous.

Bottom line

Google Lens gives desktop Chrome the central convenience people associate with Circle to Search: search visible content without first naming, copying, downloading, or saving it. It remains a Chrome-and-Google Lens workflow centered on the current webpage—not Android’s system-wide Circle to Search—and its controls, result surface, and AI handoff can change as Chrome updates.
