There is no confirmed iPhone SE 4 price: Apple’s rumored fourth-generation SE became the iPhone 16e, and the current entry-level model is the iPhone 17e. In the U.S., the iPhone 17e starts at $599 for 256GB. The iPad mini 7—officially the iPad mini (A17 Pro)—does show that Apple puts advanced chips in compact devices, but it cannot tell us what a hypothetical SE-branded iPhone would cost.
What happened to the iPhone SE 4?
The third-generation iPhone SE was the last confirmed phone Apple sold under the SE name. The model widely expected to be called the iPhone SE 4 arrived in February 2025 as the iPhone 16e. Apple then introduced the iPhone 17e on March 2, 2026, with availability beginning March 11. Apple has replaced the SE’s market role with its e-series phones; it has not announced a future SE 4 or formally said the SE name can never return.
That distinction matters when reading old rumor stories. Before the 16e launch, reports anticipated a larger OLED screen, Face ID, USB-C, a 48MP camera, a newer chip and Apple’s first in-house modem. Those predictions broadly foreshadowed the direction of the 16e, but the rumored product name and price were superseded by Apple’s actual release. MacRumors’ January 2025 report is historical context, not a current listing for a phone still awaiting launch.
iPhone 17e price and key specifications
Apple’s U.S. store lists the iPhone 17e at $599 for 256GB and $799 for 512GB. Apple’s March 2026 announcement says the starting price includes 256GB—twice the previous generation’s base storage at the same starting price. The store also advertises approximately $24.95 per month for 24 months for the 256GB configuration; financing eligibility and terms apply.

How it differs from the last iPhone SE
The iPhone 17e is not simply an iPhone SE 4 under another name. It is a much more modern, larger-screen entry phone, with a corresponding increase over the SE 3’s historical launch price.

What the iPad mini 7 does—and does not—tell us
Apple calls the tablet the iPad mini (A17 Pro); “iPad mini 7” is the common informal name. Released in October 2024, it pairs an 8.3-inch display with an A17 Pro chip, USB-C, Wi-Fi 6E and Apple Pencil Pro support. The cellular configuration supports 5G. Apple’s technical specifications document the hardware and Apple Intelligence compatibility.

- What it supports: Apple is willing to put relatively advanced silicon and Apple Intelligence-capable hardware in a compact, non-Pro tablet.
- What it does not establish: The mini’s existence or price is not evidence of a future iPhone SE 4, its specifications or its price. Tablets and phones differ in cellular, camera, component and market-positioning costs.
- What remains rumor: Reports about a future mini with an A19 Pro chip or OLED display are unconfirmed; see Macworld’s rumor coverage.
The mini may suit someone who wants a compact reading, gaming or note-taking device, especially with Apple Pencil Pro. It is not a phone substitute: it does not provide ordinary iPhone voice service or pocket-sized everyday portability, and a cellular iPad requires a separate data plan.

Buy the 17e if you need a new, current iPhone
It is Apple’s current entry-level iPhone and brings OLED, USB-C, MagSafe, 256GB base storage and an A19 chip. It is a substantial step up in price from the old SE’s $429 starting point, so consider whether the larger screen and extra storage justify the cost for your use.

Compare a refurbished iPhone 16e if upfront cost matters
Apple’s refurbished inventory changes by date, configuration and availability. Check the Apple refurbished iPhone store for a live price rather than treating a past listing as current. A refurbished 16e may lower the purchase cost, while the 17e is the current model with the newer A19 generation and MagSafe.
Move up the iPhone range if you need higher-end features
Consider a higher-tier iPhone if your priorities include more capable camera options or features not included on the 17e, such as Camera Control. Compare the specific model’s price and specifications before deciding; the 17e is not a Pro phone.

Add an iPad mini only for tablet tasks
The iPad mini makes sense as a second device for reading, games, video, handwriting and drawing. It does not replace an iPhone for phone-number-dependent services, convenient everyday photography or Apple Watch pairing.
Do not wait solely for an unannounced SE 4
Apple has announced no future SE 4. A return of the name is possible in theory, but there is no official product or price to plan around. Waiting only makes sense if you are comfortable delaying a purchase without knowing whether such a phone will appear.
Quick Recap
How to read the price you see
- Apple’s listed price: The U.S. store price is $599 for 256GB and $799 for 512GB. Local taxes may be added at checkout.
- Carrier deals: “Free” or discounted offers may require an eligible plan, trade-in, bill credits over time or other conditions. Compare the total obligation with an unlocked purchase rather than the headline monthly amount alone.
- Trade-ins: Credit depends on the device, its condition and eligibility; promotional values are not guaranteed for every buyer.
- Storage: The 512GB option costs $200 more than the 256GB configuration on Apple’s U.S. store. Choose based on your photo, video, app and offline-media needs.
