Verdict: A December 2024 image reportedly showing an iPhone 17 Pro frame or rear-shell component was never authenticated by Apple, but its central prediction proved broadly right. Apple announced the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max on September 9, 2025, with a full-width rear “plateau” surrounding the camera system. The finished phones differ from the rumor in important ways, especially materials and construction.
What the December 2024 leak appeared to show
BGR reported on December 12, 2024 that an image from China, associated with Weibo and circulated by the leaker Jukanlosreve, might show an iPhone 17 Pro frame or rear-shell component. It was presented as a purported part, not an authenticated Apple component.
The visible shape suggested a camera structure extending horizontally across much of the rear instead of the familiar corner-mounted iPhone camera island. Reported openings appeared to line up with the Action button, volume buttons, power button, Camera Control and USB-C port. Those cutouts made the object look plausibly iPhone-related, but they cannot prove that it came from Apple’s production supply chain.
The image itself was unverified. BGR noted that it could theoretically have been fabricated, including through image-generation tools. The safest description is therefore “an alleged frame or shell,” rather than “Apple’s leaked frame.”

Why commentators called it “Pixely”
The nickname referred to the visual resemblance to Google Pixel phones, which use a horizontal rear camera bar. That is a comparison of geometry and appearance, not evidence that Apple copied Google or that the two phones share the same engineering.
- Pixel-like appearance: The broad horizontal camera treatment made the comparison reasonable.
- Pixel-like engineering: Nothing in the image established how Apple arranged the internal hardware.
- Copying: That is commentary, not a verifiable conclusion.
What construction the rumor suggested
Early interpretations proposed a back made from separate metal and glass areas. One theory was that a metallic upper section could protect the camera hardware while glass elsewhere preserved wireless charging and MagSafe compatibility. The frame itself was variously speculated to use titanium, aluminum or a hybrid of the two.
These were competing interpretations, not a confirmed specification. A photograph of an unfinished-looking part cannot reliably establish the final rear-cover materials, the production process or whether every visible section belongs to the same device.
How credible was the evidence?
The original report had weak-to-moderate evidentiary value in December 2024 because its provenance was indirect: a social-media image relayed through a leaker and discussed by a news site. Physical plausibility helped, but matching button and port openings is not independent authentication.

A second report supplied additional, but still imperfect, corroboration. On March 14, 2025, Tom’s Guide covered alleged iPhone 17 Pro Max parts circulated by Majin Bu. The report cautioned that the pieces might be case molds rather than phone components and noted the source’s inconsistent track record. That made the horizontal redesign look more plausible, but it did not verify the December image.
The strongest evidence arrived later, when Apple showed the finished product. That confirms the broad design direction, not the authenticity of the original photograph.
Why might Apple have moved the camera structure?
Contemporary reporting and commentary offered several possible explanations:
- More internal volume for a larger battery.
- Space for larger or more capable camera hardware.
- Redistribution of components inside the chassis.
- A new visual identity for the Pro models.
- Potentially less rocking on a table than a corner-heavy camera bump, although that was commentary rather than an Apple performance claim.
- Possible implications for spatial photography, which were speculative.
Apple eventually supplied a narrower, concrete explanation: the rear plateau creates room for internal components and a larger battery. Apple also paired the design with an Apple-designed vapor chamber for thermal management. The company did not confirm every theory attached to the earlier rumor.

What Apple actually launched
In its September 9, 2025 announcement, Apple described the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max as having a heat-forged, brushed, aerospace-grade 7000-series aluminum unibody. The broad rear plateau spans the phone’s width around the camera system.
The final specification set was substantially more specific than the leak:
- A19 Pro chip and an Apple-designed vapor chamber.
- Three 48-megapixel Fusion cameras: Main, Ultra Wide and Telephoto.
- An all-new 48-megapixel telephoto camera with 4x optical zoom at 100mm and 8x optical-quality zoom at 200mm.
- An 18-megapixel Center Stage front camera.
- Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield protection on the back.
- Cosmic Orange, Deep Blue and Silver finishes.
Apple listed 256GB, 512GB and 1TB capacities for the iPhone 17 Pro; the Pro Max also offered 2TB. U.S. launch pricing was $1,099 for the Pro and $1,199 for the Pro Max. Preorders began September 12, 2025, with retail availability beginning September 19 in the initial markets. Those are launch prices, not guaranteed current transaction prices.
Leak scorecard: what it got right and wrong
| Prediction or claim | Assessment |
|---|---|
| Horizontal or full-width rear camera structure | Broadly correct. Apple’s final Pro models use a full-width rear plateau around the cameras. |
| “Pixely” visual resemblance | Fair as a visual comparison. It does not establish copied engineering. |
| The photographed object was a production iPhone frame | Unverified. Apple never authenticated the image. |
| Titanium or mixed titanium-aluminum construction | Not consistent with Apple’s final description. Apple specified a 7000-series aluminum unibody. |
| Metal-and-glass rear arrangement | Not established by the cited official specifications. |
| More space for components and a larger battery | Confirmed as Apple’s stated rationale. |
| The same treatment across every iPhone 17 model | Do not assume. The cited Apple announcement specifically confirms the Pro and Pro Max design. |
What the redesign means for buyers
Appearance and handling
The plateau is a conspicuous change from the iPhone 16 Pro’s conventional corner camera island. Buyers who prefer a restrained rear design may dislike the broader structure; others may value the new silhouette. A larger camera area can also make case fit and camera-lip protection more important.

Performance matters more than the leak
The purchase case rests on the finished phone’s A19 Pro chip, camera system, thermal design, battery capacity and storage—not on the fact that a rumor looked prescient. The iPhone 17 Pro starts at 256GB, while the Pro Max adds a 2TB option.
Trade-in and carrier promotions
Apple’s launch announcement cited potential U.S. trade-in credits of $200 to $700 for iPhone 13 or newer, with some carrier promotions offering up to $1,100. These were launch-era promotional figures, not guaranteed August 2026 values. Check Apple Trade In and current carrier offers for eligibility, condition requirements and expiration dates.
The accurate way to describe this leak now
The December image should not be called an official leak or a confirmed product photograph. It was an unverified object whose broad visual thesis was later corroborated by Apple’s launch. The most defensible conclusion is that the leak predicted the silhouette, not every construction detail: the horizontal rear treatment was surprisingly close, while the suspected material mix, component identity and exact internal explanation remained uncertain or changed before production.
