The iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 16 Plus have almost the same height and width, so they take up very similar space in a pocket. But they are not the same size: the Pro Max is slightly taller and thicker, weighs 28 grams more, and has a modestly larger display. Apple’s specifications put the Pro Max at 163 × 77.6 × 8.25 mm and 227 g, compared with 160.9 × 77.8 × 7.8 mm and 199 g for the Plus.
iPhone 16 Pro Max vs. iPhone 16 Plus dimensions
Apple’s published dimensions show why the phones can look almost interchangeable in a size comparison: the Pro Max is only 2.1 mm taller and 0.2 mm narrower. Its thickness and weight are the more noticeable physical differences.
| Specification | iPhone 16 Pro Max | iPhone 16 Plus | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Height | 163.0 mm (6.42 in) | 160.9 mm (6.33 in) | Pro Max is 2.1 mm taller |
| Width | 77.6 mm (3.06 in) | 77.8 mm (3.06 in) | Pro Max is 0.2 mm narrower |
| Thickness | 8.25 mm (0.32 in) | 7.80 mm (0.31 in) | Pro Max is 0.45 mm thicker |
| Weight | 227 g (7.99 oz) | 199 g (7.03 oz) | Pro Max is 28 g heavier |
| Advertised display size | 6.9 inches | 6.7 inches | Pro Max is 0.2 inch larger diagonally |
Sources: Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro Max specifications and Apple’s iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus specifications. A simple height-by-width calculation makes the Pro Max’s footprint about 1% larger; that is an estimate of the rectangular outline, not total surface area or usable screen area.
How different do they feel in everyday use?
Pocket space and one-handed reach
For pocket space, the near-match in height and width matters most: neither phone has a meaningful width advantage, and the Pro Max is only slightly taller. The 0.2 mm width difference is too small to treat the Plus as a substantially easier one-handed phone. Both are large devices, so buyers with smaller hands should not expect the Plus to solve reach problems.

Weight and thickness
The Pro Max weighs 28 g more, roughly 14% above the Plus’s listed weight. That is the physical difference most likely to register during extended use, and a protective case, MagSafe wallet, or battery pack adds further bulk and mass. The Pro Max is also 0.45 mm thicker before a case is fitted.
Screen viewing
The Pro Max gives you a slightly larger viewing area, but the diagonal difference is modest. It is not a dramatic jump in how large text or video appears; the display’s refresh-rate and Always-On features are more substantial distinctions.

How much larger is the Pro Max screen?
Apple advertises a 6.9-inch display on the Pro Max and a 6.7-inch display on the Plus. For standard rectangles, Apple lists the measurements as 6.86 and 6.69 inches respectively. Rounded corners and the Dynamic Island mean the diagonal figures do not represent a full rectangular area of usable screen.
| Display specification | iPhone 16 Pro Max | iPhone 16 Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Panel and advertised size | OLED, 6.9 inches | OLED, 6.7 inches |
| Resolution | 2868 × 1320 | 2796 × 1290 |

Why is the iPhone 16 Pro Max heavier?
Apple lists a titanium design with textured matte glass on the Pro Max and an aluminum design with color-infused glass on the Plus. The Pro Max also has a Pro camera system with a telephoto camera and LiDAR Scanner, while the Plus has a dual-camera system. Those differences help explain why the designs and camera layouts differ, but Apple does not break down the 28 g weight gap by component, so no precise share can be assigned to the frame or cameras.

No—treat cases and screen protectors as model-specific accessories. Similar body widths and screen-size labels do not ensure that camera openings, buttons, edges, or display coverage line up.

Which model makes more sense for you?
Choose the iPhone 16 Pro Max if

- You need the Pro camera system, including telephoto and LiDAR.
- You want the largest display of these two models and are comfortable with a 227 g phone.
- You want titanium styling or a 256 GB starting storage option.

The models also differ in camera system, frame material, and display features, so footprint alone is not a complete buying comparison. Apple’s iPhone comparison page lists specifications for both models.
