PaintCam Eve is a projectile-equipped security camera: it watches a protected area, issues a visual and audible warning, and can fire paintball-style rounds if movement continues into an inner action zone. PaintCam says the system can operate autonomously or wait for the owner’s approval. However, the company currently describes Eve as available for distributor orders, with public consumer availability still forthcoming. That makes it an intriguing emerging product—not a proven, widely stocked replacement for a conventional alarm.
What PaintCam Eve actually is
PaintCam describes Eve as an all-in-one “active security system,” combining video surveillance, AI-based detection, night vision, warning lights or a laser, audible alerts, remote control and a physical projectile launcher. Depending on the model and ammunition, the launcher can mark a person with paint, deliver a PAVA or capsaicin-based deterrent round, or deter animals.
The company markets the concept as a new kind of security camera, but “projectile-equipped security device” is the more useful description. A camera records or alerts; Eve can also put a physical object into the scene. PaintCam’s “world’s first” language is a company marketing claim, not an independently established industry fact.
Eve supports iOS and Android apps, and PaintCam says it supports ONVIF and RTSP video integration. Higher-end models add human, animal or face-recognition features, while the standard Eve page emphasizes geometry-based motion detection rather than confident identification of a burglar. How the warning and firing sequence is supposed to work
Detection zone
The system first detects movement in an outer area configured by the owner. Movement alone is not proof that someone is an intruder: pets, wildlife, branches, bags, shadows, guests and delivery workers can all matter.
Warning zone
If the subject enters the warning zone, PaintCam says Eve activates an audible warning and a visual warning, including a laser pointer. No projectile is supposed to fire at this stage.
Action zone
If movement continues into the inner action zone, the system can either fire automatically or request authorization, depending on the selected mode. PaintCam says the app includes an emergency-stop control that can halt marking activity. The company describes this sequence and control behavior; the available material does not establish independent measurements of detection accuracy, firing precision or emergency-stop latency.
Autonomous mode versus owner approval
Autonomous mode
In Autonomous Mode, PaintCam says Eve detects, warns and marks without waiting for the owner. That may be useful where a clearly defined private perimeter matters more than avoiding every false trigger, but it gives a mistaken detection immediate physical consequences.

User Approval Mode
User Approval Mode sends a notification after detection and warning so the owner can review live video and authorize or cancel the action. This reduces the chance of an unattended false positive, but a notification is not instant human supervision. The owner may be asleep, offline, unable to identify the scene, or too slow to respond before a person leaves.
Which PaintCam models exist?

Model descriptions come from PaintCam’s public pages at PaintCam and the Eve Simba page. Recognition capabilities should not be assumed across the entire lineup.
What can it fire?
PaintCam’s Eve FAQ says the device holds up to 25 biodegradable .68-caliber projectiles and has an effective marking distance of up to 20 meters. It lists standard marking paintballs, PAVA or capsaicin deterrent rounds, and animal-deterrence projectiles. A standard 16-gram CO₂ cartridge is said to provide approximately 15–25 shots, with the result varying by conditions and projectile type.
Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. “Non-lethal” or “non-lethal deterrence” also does not mean risk-free. A projectile can injure an eye or face, chemical rounds introduce exposure concerns, and paint can damage clothing, vehicles, walls or neighboring property. The launcher should never be aimed toward a public sidewalk, road, shared access route or an area where children, pets or uninvolved people may enter.

IP65 indicates dust protection and resistance to water jets; it does not guarantee reliable detection in fog, heavy rain, freezing rain, glare, wind-blown vegetation or every outdoor mounting position. Shadows, headlights, insects, spiders, obstructions and poor camera angles can affect results. PaintCam’s maintenance intervals are recommendations from the manufacturer, not independently validated service requirements.
Can you buy PaintCam now?
Not through a normal, confirmed consumer checkout based on the company pages reviewed. PaintCam says its devices are currently available for order to distributors only, with public availability coming later. Its consumer-facing pages direct visitors toward a waitlist, and the product collections contain sold-out or unavailable listings. Check the security-camera collection and the full catalog for current status.
The catalog displayed a price range reaching $2,100, but the available pages did not identify a currently purchasable consumer configuration at that amount. A real ownership budget would also include replacement rounds, CO₂ cartridges, installation, connectivity, optional cloud services, monitoring, maintenance and possible insurance or legal costs.
PaintCam says core security functions can work without a subscription, while premium cloud features may add long-term storage, advanced analytics and automatic updates. Those service terms and final consumer pricing should be confirmed before ordering.

The central practical problem: false positives
PaintCam’s standard Eve description treats moving objects in the protected area as unauthorized and marks them. That is materially different from a system that reliably proves a human is an intruder. Possible triggers include:
- Pets, wildlife and livestock
- Children, guests and delivery workers
- Contractors, gardeners and emergency responders
- Tree branches, plastic bags, shadows and headlights
- Rain, fog, insects or partial movement behind an obstruction
False negatives are possible too. Occlusion, backlighting, camouflage, camera tampering, power loss, network failure and poorly configured zones can prevent detection or response. PaintCam’s homepage uses strong accuracy language, but no independent false-positive rate, accuracy study or long-term reliability test was established in the available material.

A paint mark may identify or deter someone, but it cannot guarantee that a person will leave. A mistaken shot could provoke retaliation or escalate a confrontation. Chemical rounds and animal-deterrence rounds create additional exposure and animal-welfare questions. Autonomous firing also raises potential issues involving injury, property damage, mistaken targeting and nuisance claims.
Do not assume the device is legal everywhere in the United States. Rules can vary by state, city and county, and may depend on whether authorities classify it as a paintball marker, air-powered device, weapon or security system; what the projectile contains; whether firing is autonomous; and where the device is aimed.

- Check state and local rules covering projectile launchers, chemical irritants, surveillance and animal deterrence.
- Ask local police or code-enforcement officials how the installation would be classified.
- Consult an attorney before deploying an autonomous or projectile-based system.
- Ask your homeowner’s insurer whether the device affects coverage or liability.
- Keep every action zone entirely on private property and away from public or shared areas.
PaintCam itself says users must check local wildlife-protection rules for animal deployments. Its privacy policy also puts responsibility for compliance with surveillance and recording laws on the owner.
Privacy and cybersecurity questions
PaintCam says its products and PTC app may process video and image data, device status, firmware version, diagnostics, user settings and Wi-Fi information. Depending on settings, footage may be stored on local microSD media or in the cloud.
- Is the camera viewing a public sidewalk, neighbor’s property or shared driveway?
- Are delivery workers, visitors or employees being recorded?
- Does face recognition on a higher-end model create additional obligations?
- Who can access cloud footage, and how long is it retained?
- Is data encrypted in transit and at rest?
- Can remote access be disabled, and what happens if an account is compromised?
The privacy policy does not, by itself, establish the device’s complete security architecture. Buyers should obtain clear answers about encryption, account protection, retention and offline behavior.
Who might consider PaintCam—and who should avoid it?
Potentially suitable
- Owners of large, clearly bounded private property
- Rural sites or controlled perimeters with dependable power and connectivity
- Users who specifically want marking or deterrence rather than recording alone
- Owners prepared to maintain a pressurized projectile system and verify local rules
Probably unsuitable
- Apartments, condos and dense urban lots
- Homes beside sidewalks, shared driveways or neighboring property
- Properties frequented by children, pets, guests or contractors
- Anyone unwilling to supervise autonomous firing or accept false-positive liability
- Buyers who need mature retail availability, guaranteed monitoring or a simple indoor camera

Bottom line
PaintCam is a genuine and unusual active-deterrence concept, but the current evidence supports treating it as an emerging, limited-availability product rather than a proven mainstream security replacement. Its defining advantage—the ability to launch a physical projectile—is also its defining liability. Until public availability, independent testing, local legality, safety controls and long-term reliability are clearer, most households will be better served by a conventional camera, alarm, professional monitoring service or non-projectile deterrent.
