Yes—if your main problem with Fire TV is its Amazon-centered interface, the Roku Streaming Stick 4K is an excellent replacement. Roku puts your installed apps at the center, supports 4K, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, voice search and TV controls, and hides neatly behind a television. It is not universally better: the newer Roku Streaming Stick Plus is cheaper, Fire TV can be faster and better integrated with Alexa, and demanding gamers or local-media users may need a box-style streamer.
Why someone unhappy with Fire TV may prefer Roku
“I don’t like Fire TV” can mean several different things. Some viewers dislike a home screen dominated by promoted titles and Amazon rentals; others find installed apps hard to reach, dislike Alexa’s remote layout, or do not want another Amazon account and ecosystem. Performance complaints—slow loading, limited storage, heat or inconsistent updates—are also common reasons to shop around, although experiences vary by Fire TV model and software version.
Roku is not ad-free. It promotes content and includes free, ad-supported channels. The practical difference is that Roku’s starting point is usually an app grid you arrange, while Fire TV emphasizes Amazon discovery alongside installed apps. That app-first layout can be easier to explain to children, guests and less technical household members. Roku search can also look across supported services instead of centering one retailer’s catalog.
What the Roku Streaming Stick 4K includes
Roku’s current U.S. Streaming Stick 4K is model 3820/3820R2. The official product page listed it at $49.99 on sale, reduced from $79.99, when checked in August 2026; promotions can change. It is a compact HDMI stick with a long-range Wi-Fi receiver and supports 4K output, Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and HDR.

Any television with an HDMI input can use the stick, but advanced formats require compatible equipment and content. Roku’s product details are at Roku’s Streaming Stick 4K page.
Picture quality: what 4K, Dolby Vision and HDR10+ really require
The device can output 4K, but it cannot upgrade an HD television. Roku says 4K requires a compatible 4K TV with an HDMI HDCP 2.2 port, a high-speed HDMI cable and 4K content. Dolby Vision and HDR10+ likewise require a television and title that support those formats. Dolby Atmos additionally needs compatible content and a compatible sound system. Your streaming subscription may also need to include 4K playback.
On an HD set, the stick still works; the television determines the visible resolution. Roku’s format and cable requirements are outlined on its comparison page.

Roku Streaming Stick 4K versus current Fire TV models
There is no single “Fire TV Stick” specification. Amazon lists the Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen, 2023), Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen, 2023), Fire TV Stick 4K Plus and 4K Select (2025), and Fire TV Stick HD (2026). Identify the exact model before comparing speed, wireless standards or storage. Amazon calls the 4K Max 2nd Gen its most powerful streaming stick, with Wi-Fi 6E, 16GB storage, 4K, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.
| Priority | Better fit |
|---|---|
| App-centered, less Amazon-focused navigation | Roku Streaming Stick 4K |
| Alexa, Prime Video and Amazon household integration | Fire TV |
| Maximum storage and high-end Fire TV hardware | Fire TV Stick 4K Max 2nd Gen |
| Dolby Vision in a compact, affordable stick | Roku Streaming Stick 4K |
| Heavy gaming or extensive local media | A higher-end box-style streamer |
Roku may feel calmer and simpler, but that is an experience judgment—not proof that it opens every app faster. A newer or more powerful Fire TV can outperform this older Roku hardware in demanding workloads.
Roku Streaming Stick 4K or Streaming Stick Plus?
Roku’s current lineup lists the Streaming Stick Plus at $39.99 and the Streaming Stick 4K at $49.99; prices are volatile. The 4K model’s important extra is Dolby Vision. Choose the Plus if your TV supports only HDR10 or basic HDR, you mostly watch HD or standard 4K, or saving $10 matters. Choose the 4K when your television supports Dolby Vision, your services provide Dolby Vision titles, or you want broader HDR-format flexibility.

Does Roku have the apps you use?
Major services are generally available on both platforms, including Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, Disney+, Max, Hulu, Paramount+, Peacock, Apple TV, Plex, YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, Sling TV and Fubo. Availability and features can change by country, service and device. Check the Roku Channel Store and each provider before switching, especially for local broadcasters, niche sports, international, religious or regional apps. Roku notes that app availability varies and that some content requires separate payment.
Purchases made through Amazon do not disappear: Prime Video content remains accessed through the Prime Video app. However, expect to reinstall apps and sign in again. Check whether subscriptions are billed by Amazon, Roku, Apple, Google or the service itself; buying a Roku does not cancel or automatically transfer billing.

4K or HDR is missing
Verify the TV, HDMI port, high-speed cable, title, subscription tier and Roku display settings. Format support depends on all of them.
Remote cannot control volume or power
Repeat remote setup and select the correct TV brand. The controls are included, but compatibility is not universal.
An app is missing
Search the Roku Channel Store and consult the service’s supported-device list; availability on Fire TV does not guarantee availability on Roku.
Who should choose another device?
- Owners of HD-only TVs can save money with an HD Roku.
- Prime-heavy households and extensive Alexa users may prefer Fire TV.
- Gamers, local-media enthusiasts and buyers needing substantial storage should consider a higher-end streamer.
- Anyone requiring Ethernet without an adapter should look at Roku Ultra or another box-style device.
- If your recent smart TV has fast, well-supported apps, an external stick may add little.
- Roku is not suitable for people who want an ad-free platform.

Verdict
Buy the Roku Streaming Stick 4K when your priority is escaping Fire TV’s Amazon-centered experience while keeping Dolby Vision, HDR10+, broad mainstream apps and a compact design. Buy the Streaming Stick Plus if you want the better value and your TV does not need Dolby Vision. Stay with Fire TV when Alexa, Prime Video integration, sideloading or the 4K Max’s storage and performance matter more.
