Apple Smart Glasses and Other AI Wearables Expected by 2029

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple’s smart glasses are reportedly targeting a late-2027 customer launch, but Apple has announced no product, price, specifications or release date. In the meantime, Meta’s AI glasses are already on sale, Google’s Android XR partners are targeting audio-glasses launches in fall 2026, and Snap says its higher-end SPECS AR glasses are expected to ship that fall. The key distinction: most AI glasses are camera-and-audio devices, not augmented-reality displays.

Three kinds of glasses—and why the distinction matters

“AI glasses” can describe very different devices. A camera, microphone and speaker in an ordinary-looking frame do not put graphics in your field of view. A small display can show selected information, while augmented-reality glasses aim to place digital content in the wearer’s surroundings.

Type What it does Examples in this market Main trade-off
Camera AI glasses Capture images or video, provide open-ear audio and connect to an AI assistant; no visual overlay. Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta, Meta Glasses Practical everyday functions, but camera privacy concerns and no in-lens information.
Display AI glasses Add a small screen for information such as directions, translation or messages. Ray-Ban Meta Display More visual utility, with added price, weight and battery demands.
AR glasses Place digital interfaces or objects in the wearer’s view of the environment. Snap SPECS; Meta Orion remains a prototype More ambitious spatial computing, but expensive and harder to make comfortable and practical.
AI audio wearables Provide voice interaction through earbuds, headphones or a pendant, without glasses-based visual context. Apple’s reported AI pendant and camera-enabled or AI-expanded AirPods Discreet voice access, but visual understanding depends on whether cameras or another input are available.
Headsets Use larger displays and sensors for immersive spatial computing. Apple Vision Pro; Samsung Galaxy XR More capable and immersive, but not ordinary lightweight eyewear.

Meta’s product categories make the distinction especially clear: camera AI glasses, display AI glasses and AR glasses are not interchangeable labels.

What is reported about Apple’s glasses

Apple is reportedly developing AI-focused glasses designed more like current camera-and-audio eyewear than a Vision Pro headset. Bloomberg reported the broader project, while a July 2026 MacRumors summary of Bloomberg reporting said Apple was targeting a possible WWDC 2027 unveiling and customer availability in late 2027. Those are reported targets, not an Apple commitment. A previous reported schedule pointed to late 2026 or early 2027; the later target illustrates how easily hardware timelines can move.

Rated IP65 water-resistant against sweat and splashes—great for running, cycling, hiking, and other outdoor activities (not suitable for swimming or submersion).

The reported concept centers on cameras and microphones for visual context, open-ear speakers, Siri and connection to an iPhone. Potential uses could include calls, music, notifications, questions about visible objects or text, navigation and hands-free image capture. These are possibilities inferred from the reported direction, not a confirmed feature list. Apple has reportedly considered prototypes both with and without cameras; the final design and whether it records photos or video are unknown.

For now, there is no verified basis to say the first Apple glasses will have an in-lens display. Camera-based assistance can use what a wearer sees without placing graphics in front of their eyes. A display-equipped model would face additional challenges: fitting optics into a light frame, managing heat and battery drain, preserving outdoor visibility, accommodating prescription lenses and keeping the product socially acceptable. Full AR glasses are a separate, more speculative step—not another name for Apple’s likely first AI glasses.

Apple’s reported strength would be integration with iPhone, Siri, Apple Intelligence, AirPods and Apple Watch, alongside its privacy positioning. Neither a final privacy architecture nor an advantage over competitors has been established. Siri quality, the usefulness of visual assistance and the amount of phone or cloud dependence will matter more than ecosystem promises alone.

Apple’s other reported AI wearables

Bloomberg has also reported that Apple is accelerating work on an AirTag-sized AI pendant that could be pinned to clothing or worn as a necklace, as well as AirPods with cameras or expanded AI capabilities. These would be distinct from glasses: a pendant or earbud may offer voice access, while camera-equipped hardware could supply visual context. None is an announced product, and their timing and features are even less certain than the glasses roadmap. Bloomberg’s report describes the projects as part of a broader wearable push, not confirmed launches.

Meta has products buyers can compare today

Meta already sells several kinds of AI glasses, giving buyers a concrete alternative rather than a roadmap to wait for. Its U.S. store listed these starting prices as of August 2026; frame, lens, prescription and retailer choices can change the total:

Product U.S. starting price listed by Meta, August 2026 Type
Meta Glasses $299 Camera and audio AI glasses
Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer and Skyler Gen 2 $379 Camera and audio AI glasses
Oakley Meta HSTN $399 Performance-oriented camera and audio glasses
Oakley Meta Vanguard $499 Sports-oriented camera and audio glasses
Ray-Ban Meta Display $799 Display AI glasses, including Neural Band

Prices are from Meta’s U.S. store and are not universal prices. Meta’s lineup combines eyewear designs with microphones, cameras, open-ear audio and voice-driven AI. Buyers should check the exact phone requirements, supported features, prescription choices and account terms for the frame and market they intend to use.

Ray-Ban Meta Display adds a small screen

The Ray-Ban Meta Display has a full-color 600×600-pixel monocular display, rather than a full-field AR view. Meta describes functions including visual walking directions, live translation, message handling and media controls. It is rated for up to six hours of use on a charge; the case adds battery capacity, but actual runtime depends on use. The Neural Band supplies wrist-based EMG control. See Ray-Ban’s product details and Meta’s announcement.

Sports and prescription buyers should check the fine print

Oakley Meta HSTN is positioned for active and outdoor use. Oakley says it requires a compatible iPhone or Android phone, wireless internet, the Meta AI app and a Meta account. Features can change or be withdrawn, and some may depend on subscription or regional availability. Oakley also lists full voice commands in English, French, Spanish and Italian, subject to supported-market restrictions. Consult the Oakley HSTN product page for current compatibility and language details.

Prescription support is not a guarantee that every prescription works with every frame. Lens type, prescription strength, fit and frame geometry can constrain the choice; the weight and camera angle can also feel different once prescription lenses are fitted. Confirm the available lenses and total price for your prescription before ordering.

Google, Samsung and eyewear partners are targeting audio glasses

Google’s Android XR platform spans headsets and glasses. Google says its first collections of audio glasses are coming in fall 2026, with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster among its eyewear partners. The company describes Gemini-enabled assistance for translation, navigation, calls, messages, music, reminders and contextual questions. That is a platform roadmap, not a single finalized product with confirmed price and broad retail availability. Google’s Android XR page still labels display glasses “stay tuned.”

Warby Parker’s preview of Intelligent Eyewear, developed with Google and Samsung, describes Gemini, real-time translation, turn-by-turn navigation, photo and video capture, open-ear audio and voice assistance. It is a preview and signup page, not a priced retail listing or a guarantee of final features. Prescription-focused buyers can follow Warby Parker’s official page, but should wait for confirmed specifications and availability before treating it as a purchase option.

Snap SPECS targets a more ambitious, expensive tier

Snap announced SPECS as see-through AR glasses with AI assistance, work tools, entertainment and shared experiences. Snap lists a $2,195 price, a $200 refundable deposit and expected fall 2026 shipping in the United States, United Kingdom and France. These figures and timing come from Snap’s announcement; shipping expectations are not proof of delivery or broad availability. Check Snap’s announcement for current terms.

  • #1 SELLING AI GLASSES - Tap into iconic style for men and women, and advanced technology with the newest generation of Ray-Ban Meta smart AI glasses. Capture photos and video recordings, listen to music, make hands-free calls or ask Meta AI questions on-the-go.
  • UP TO 8 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE - On a full charge, these smart AI glasses can last 2x longer than previous generations, up to 8 hours with moderate use. Plus, each pair comes with a charging case that provides up to 48 hours of charging on-the-go.
  • 3K ULTRA HD: RECORD SHARP VIDEOS WITH RICH DETAIL — Hands-free video recording with an ultra-wide 12 MP camera in up to 3K resolution. Record clips up to 3 minutes per session. Capture sharp, vibrant memories while staying in the moment.
  • LISTEN WITH OPEN-EAR AUDIO — Listen to music and more with discreet open-ear speakers that deliver rich, quality audio without blocking out conversations or the ambient noises around you.
  • ASK YOUR GLASSES ANYTHING WITH META AI — Get real-time suggestions, answers, object identification, and reminders hands-free. Requires Bluetooth connection to your smartphone and the Meta AI app. Ensure your phone has internet connectivity.

At that price, SPECS is not a direct budget alternative to camera glasses. It is better understood as a premium AR option for enthusiasts, developers and creators who value see-through spatial features enough to accept a substantially higher price and the compromises of early AR eyewear. Meta’s Orion, by contrast, remains a prototype rather than a standard consumer retail product.

Buy now, wait, or choose by use case

Buy now if you need hands-free audio or capture

Meta’s camera glasses make sense if you want calls, open-ear audio, hands-free capture or basic visual AI now and accept the required phone app, account and connectivity. Oakley’s models may suit outdoor or sports use; Ray-Ban designs offer a more conventional fashion frame. If you specifically want a display, Meta Ray-Ban Display is a currently listed option, but its monocular screen is not full AR.

Wait for Apple if ecosystem fit matters more than being first

An iPhone user who prioritizes Siri and Apple services may reasonably wait to see Apple’s official design and compatibility details, especially if no wearable is needed soon. Waiting is a bet on an unannounced product with an uncertain schedule, not a way to reserve a confirmed device. Apple has no official glasses product or preorder page as of August 18, 2026.

Choose by the job, not the AI label

  • iPhone user: Compare current Meta compatibility and account requirements against the possibility of closer Apple integration later; no Apple specifications are confirmed.
  • Android user: Android XR’s partner roadmap may be more relevant, but fall 2026 audio-glasses timing is not the same as confirmed pricing or retail stock.
  • Runner or cyclist: Assess secure fit, camera controls, audio audibility and activity-specific design; Oakley Meta is positioned for sports, but check exact features and fit.
  • Prescription wearer: Verify prescription range, lens types, frame fit, added cost and local availability before buying any smart frame.
  • Privacy-sensitive buyer: Prefer a device whose recording indicators and controls you understand—or avoid camera-equipped eyewear. No brand’s privacy claim resolves bystander concerns by itself.
  • AR enthusiast or developer: Snap SPECS is the more explicit announced AR option; its listed price and expected regional shipping place it far from ordinary camera-glasses budgets.
  • Budget-conscious buyer: Meta’s camera-glasses range starts below its display model, but compare total cost, phone/account requirements and prescription lenses rather than the frame price alone.

What can go wrong with AI glasses

Recording and bystander privacy

A camera can make people uncomfortable even when the wearer is asking an AI question rather than saving a video. Before using camera glasses in a workplace, school, hospital, gym, museum or performance venue, check the venue’s rules and applicable recording laws. A visible indicator, if present, does not by itself answer what data is processed or retained; distinguish image sensing, live AI processing and stored recordings. Apple’s reported privacy emphasis is not a verified policy for an unreleased product.

Accuracy and safety

Wearable AI can misidentify objects, misread text, misunderstand speech or give unsafe directions. Do not rely on it for medical diagnosis, emergency response, legal or financial decisions, or unsupervised child safety. Accessibility use deserves particular care: test the device for the specific task and retain a validated alternative where errors could cause harm.

Connectivity, battery and feature changes

Lightweight glasses often depend on a phone, wireless connection, an account and cloud services. Weak data, an unsupported region, an app update, a service outage or a discontinued feature can reduce what works. A display, camera, wireless radio and audio all draw on a small frame’s battery; compare continuous audio, camera-heavy use and display use separately rather than treating a single runtime figure as an all-day guarantee.

Comfort, repair and social rules

Frame weight and balance matter over a full day, particularly with prescription lenses. Ask about warranty and repair options for integrated cameras, batteries and hinges. Visible cameras may also be unwelcome or prohibited in particular spaces, regardless of the device’s other capabilities.

Three-year outlook: August 2026 to August 2029

  • Already established: Meta sells camera and display AI glasses, with U.S. starting prices listed by its store. This is the strongest current option for buyers who want a product rather than a roadmap.
  • Announced or platform-targeted for fall 2026: Snap expects SPECS shipping in the U.S., U.K. and France, and Google says Android XR audio-glasses collections are coming. Product availability, final features and regional reach still need confirmation.
  • Reported, medium confidence: Apple is reportedly targeting a late-2027 customer launch, with a possible WWDC 2027 unveiling. Dates and features could change.
  • Speculative: Full Apple AR display glasses by 2029. Current reporting does not establish a launch window for such a product.
  • Unverified for Apple: Product name, price, display, prescription options, recording controls, subscription model and exact compatibility.

The likely market is a ladder rather than one universal product: relatively accessible camera-and-audio glasses, costlier glasses with small displays, and much more ambitious AR systems. Apple may enter the first category before attempting the third, but until it announces a product, that remains a reported direction rather than a buying promise.
