That amount was a fundraising target, not a publicly confirmed completed round. The effort later became io Products, which OpenAI agreed to acquire in an all-equity transaction valued at about $6.5 billion on May 21, 2025. The io team subsequently merged with OpenAI, but the product’s final design, price and launch date remain undisclosed as of August 18, 2026.
What was originally reported?
April 2024 coverage described a secretive venture involving former Apple design chief Jony Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The proposed company was developing an AI-powered personal device expected to use OpenAI technology. Reports said the team was seeking as much as $1 billion from outside investors, while specifications and even the company’s final structure remained unknown.
The phrase “iPhone of artificial intelligence” appeared in reporting and investor speculation; it was not the official name of a product. The original story was about fundraising discussions, not a product launch or a completed financing announcement. Ars Technica’s April 2024 report summarizes the early account, while The Information described talks to raise the money.
Was the $1 billion actually raised?
There is no public confirmation that an independent Ive-Altman hardware startup closed a $1 billion round. The available reports use terms such as “seeking” and “in talks to raise.” Those are materially different from a signed financing, a completed investment or cash deposited in a company account.

Later reporting said io received undisclosed backing from Emerson Collective and other firms, but the cited reports did not establish the amounts or a complete investor list. The most accurate description is therefore that the project reportedly pursued up to $1 billion before its corporate path changed. Reuters reporting reproduced by Investing.com likewise described negotiations rather than a closed financing.
Who was involved?
| Person or organization | Role supported by public reporting |
|---|---|
| Jony Ive | Former Apple design chief and founder of the independent design firm LoveFrom. |
| Sam Altman | OpenAI CEO and a central collaborator on the AI-hardware effort. |
| LoveFrom | Ive’s design collective, which continued to have design and creative responsibilities. |
| io Products | Hardware startup founded by Ive with former Apple executives Scott Cannon, Evans Hankey and Tang Tan. |
| OpenAI | The AI company that collaborated with the team and later acquired io. |
| SoftBank and Arm | Potential financing and chip-strategy participants discussed in reports, not publicly confirmed as a completed arrangement. |
OpenAI’s own account does not describe Altman as a co-founder of io. It says Ive founded io with Cannon, Hankey and Tan, while OpenAI and Ive’s team collaborated before the acquisition. OpenAI’s announcement is the primary source for that structure.
Why was SoftBank part of the story?
Reports said SoftBank and Masayoshi Son were involved in discussions that could have exceeded $1 billion. Arm, SoftBank’s chip-design company, was also mentioned as a possible participant in the hardware strategy.

That does not establish that SoftBank invested, that Arm designed the device’s processor or that a particular Arm-based architecture was selected. The evidence supports negotiations and possible involvement, not a completed financial or technical agreement.

What device were Ive and Altman planning?
The public description was deliberately broad: an AI-first personal device intended to offer a new way to interact with software rather than simply putting ChatGPT inside another smartphone app. Ive and OpenAI argued that today’s computers and phones were built around older interaction models.
Altman said in September 2024 that the product would not be a smartphone. That statement does not prove it would be a pendant, speaker, earbud, camera or other wearable. The official announcement did not disclose a final form factor, screen arrangement, sensors, price or release date.

Court filings later described at least one early prototype as neither an in-ear device nor a wearable. That applies to the prototype discussed in the filing, not necessarily to the eventual commercial product. TechCrunch’s report explains that limitation.
Why would an AI device require so much capital?
A new consumer hardware platform needs funding well beyond access to a language model. Typical cost centers include:
- industrial, interaction and mechanical design;
- custom electronics, microphones, cameras, speakers, sensors and power management;
- prototype tooling, manufacturing setup, quality control and inventory;
- cloud inference, connectivity and software operations;
- regulatory and safety testing;
- distribution, returns, repairs, warranties and customer support; and
- years of software and model updates after launch.
These are the normal capital demands of a new hardware platform, not an itemized io budget publicly disclosed by the companies.

How the project evolved into io and OpenAI hardware
| Date | Development |
|---|---|
| April 2024 | Reports said Ive and Altman were seeking up to $1 billion for an AI-device venture. Ars Technica. |
| September 2024 | Ive publicly confirmed work on an AI-hardware project with OpenAI; Altman said it would not be a phone. MacRumors and Axios. |
| May 21, 2025 | OpenAI announced an agreement to acquire io Products in an all-equity transaction valued at approximately $6.5 billion. Associated Press. |
| July 9, 2025 | OpenAI updated the announcement to say io had officially merged with OpenAI. Ive and LoveFrom remained independent while retaining design and creative responsibilities. OpenAI. |
The $6.5 billion figure is an acquisition valuation, not a $6.5 billion cash budget for building and manufacturing a device. Because the transaction was described as all-equity, it replaced the need for the startup to operate indefinitely as a separately financed company in the form originally reported.
What would make the product useful?
An AI-native device would have to beat the convenience of using ChatGPT on a phone, not merely demonstrate a novel interface. The decisive tests are likely to include:
- Interaction advantage: whether voice or multimodal input is genuinely faster than opening a phone app;
- Latency and reliability: whether requests are answered and actions completed consistently;
- Privacy: how recordings, images, personal context and biometric information are processed and retained;
- Battery and connectivity: whether an always-connected product can last through a normal day and what happens offline;
- Cloud dependence: what remains functional during an outage or after a model change;
- Cost of ownership: hardware, subscriptions, cellular service, repairs and replacement; and
- Platform control: whether OpenAI can support the accounts, integrations and permissions that smartphone users take for granted.
Risks learned from earlier AI gadgets
Novel interface is not the same as daily usefulness
Products such as the AI Pin showed that an attractive concept can fail if responses are slow, actions are unreliable or the device cannot justify carrying another computer.

Natural-language control has hard edge cases
Devices like the Rabbit R1 illustrate problems involving changing third-party apps, authentication, ambiguous commands and permissions. A conversational interface still needs dependable execution underneath.
Hardware economics can undermine the product
Cloud inference can make a low-priced device expensive to operate. Manufacturing defects, returns, repairs and support can also overwhelm a young hardware company.
Privacy and legal exposure are unavoidable
A product that listens, sees or remembers surroundings must handle consent, retention and security. Trademark, trade-secret and employment disputes may also delay development or force changes. Associated Press coverage has reported legal concerns, while Axios reported that litigation could affect hardware timing.
What is the current status as of August 18, 2026?
The confirmed status is that io’s team is part of OpenAI and that OpenAI has committed to developing new hardware with Ive’s design involvement. The public record still does not provide a complete product specification, retail price, subscription model, mass-market launch date or confirmed availability.
Accordingly, the 2024 $1 billion headline is a historical snapshot of reported fundraising discussions. It is not the project’s current financing status, and it should not be read as proof that $1 billion was raised or that a finished device existed.
What can readers buy while waiting?
These products are available now, but none is a confirmed substitute for the undisclosed OpenAI-Ive device:
