Under Choose your color, select Dark, Light, or Custom. Custom lets you choose separate appearances for Windows and supported apps.
Turn on dark mode in Windows 10
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Personalization, then Colors.
- Open Choose your color and select Dark.
The change normally appears immediately; you should not need to restart Windows. Dark mode changes supported parts of the interface, including Settings, File Explorer, Start, the taskbar, Action Center, and apps that follow the Windows color preference. It does not recolor every program, website, document, image, or video.
Switch back to light mode
Go to Settings → Personalization → Colors → Choose your color and select Light. Windows and supported apps return to a light appearance. Windows may offer fewer Start menu, taskbar, and accent-color options in Light mode; that is a design limitation, not a sign that the setting failed.
Use Custom mode to set Windows and apps separately
Select Custom under Choose your color. Windows 10 then shows separate controls for Choose your default Windows mode and Choose your default app mode.

This setting controls the default preference; an app must support Windows theme synchronization to follow it. Microsoft documents the [Windows color settings](https://support.microsoft.com/en-US/Windows/Experience/Personalization/personalize-your-colors-in-windows) and the [Windows and app mode controls](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/windows/use-color-and-contrast-for-accessibility-in-microsoft-365).
Why an app or website may not change
Some programs do not support Windows dark mode. Others have their own independent appearance setting or use a custom interface that ignores the system preference. A website displayed in a browser may follow the browser or site’s theme instead.

- Open the program’s Settings, Preferences, or Appearance page.
- Look for Light, Dark, System, or Use Windows mode.
- If the app has no such option, close and reopen it once to check whether it needs to reload its appearance.
Microsoft notes that not every app supports dark mode; its [Win32 app guidance](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/desktop/modernize/ui/apply-windows-themes) explains that applications need to implement theme support.
Fix an incomplete or changing appearance
The taskbar or Start menu does not look fully dark
Check that the default Windows mode is set to Dark, either by selecting Dark overall or through Custom. Accent color and transparency can also affect the result. In Colors, review the accent-color options and Transparency effects. Showing an accent color on Start, the taskbar, and Action Center is available only when Windows mode is Dark or Custom, not Light.

The settings labels do not match
Windows 10 commonly calls the control Choose your color. Some newer Microsoft instructions use Choose your mode, particularly for Windows 11. Look for the equivalent Light, Dark, or Custom choices.
The selection keeps reverting
- Reapply the choice at Settings → Personalization → Colors.
- Close and reopen the affected app, then restart Windows if needed.
- Temporarily disable third-party theme or automatic-switching utilities to check whether one is overriding the setting.
- If the computer is managed by an organization, ask its administrator whether a policy controls personalization.
- If the issue persists, check whether it also occurs in another Windows user account.
A registry edit is not the normal fix for a color preference; it is more fragile than using Settings and may be overwritten by Windows or another utility.

Dark mode is not the same as a contrast theme
Dark mode changes the general light-or-dark color preference. Contrast themes use a deliberately restricted palette with stronger visual separation and are a separate accessibility feature. They may help some people with low vision or readability needs, but can substantially change colors and make some apps look unusual. See Microsoft’s [contrast theme guidance](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/design/accessibility/high-contrast-themes).
Dark mode may feel more comfortable to some people in dim surroundings, but it is not universally easier on the eyes; lighting, display quality, contrast, and personal needs matter. It also does not guarantee longer battery life: dark pixels may use less power on some OLED displays, while an LCD’s backlight remains on and results depend on the display and content.

Automatic switching and Windows 10 support
The standard Windows 10 Colors page offers manual Light, Dark, and Custom choices, not a built-in sunrise/sunset schedule. Third-party utilities can add scheduling, but they bring their own compatibility, privacy, and maintenance considerations.
Windows 10 version 22H2 was the final feature version. Standard support ended on October 14, 2025; Windows 10 continues to run, but ordinary updates are no longer provided for covered editions unless the device has a qualifying support path. Microsoft describes the end of support and options such as [Extended Security Updates](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/updates-lifecycle/windows-10-support-has-ended-on-october-14-2025); eligibility and terms vary. The appearance controls described here remain available.
