The overview is generated by Google Search, not by Edge. On desktop Edge, the safest workaround is Google’s Web filter; an Edge-compatible extension can hide the panel automatically, but that is a local workaround rather than a true Google opt-out.
The short answer
As of August 18, 2026, Google does not provide a complete user-facing switch for turning off AI Overviews in ordinary Search. Google Search Community guidance recommends switching to the Web filter instead: Google’s guidance on turning off AI Overviews. Microsoft Edge controls browser features, extensions, privacy, and search-provider choices; it does not control Google’s server-generated result components. That leaves three practical choices: select Web for individual searches, use a maintained extension to hide the overview, or try a custom shortcut that opens a Web-style result page. The shortcut approach is optional because Google can change or ignore URL parameters.
Use Google’s Web filter in Edge
This is Google’s official, lowest-risk bypass when the filter is available.

- Open Google in your desktop Edge window.
- Run your search.
- Select Web in the filter row.
- If Web is not shown, select More, then Web.
The Web view shows traditional text-based links without the AI Overview panel for that results page. It is not a permanent setting: you will generally need to choose it again for another search. Google can also change the filter’s position or availability by country, language, account, device, query, or interface experiment. Selecting Web may remove other result features as well.
Save a Web result as a favorite
You can bookmark a Web-filtered results page to make the view easier to reach. This does not create a guaranteed global preference; a new query, an expired session, or a Google interface change may return you to the standard results layout.

Try a custom search shortcut carefully
Edge lets you add search providers and shortcuts, so some users create a Google shortcut intended to open a Web-only result view. This can reduce clicks if the current Google URL continues to honor the required parameter.
Because Google’s result-page parameters and filtering behavior change, do not treat any particular URL pattern as an officially supported permanent opt-out. Test the shortcut with several unrelated searches, then test again with the shortcut disabled. If an AI Overview still appears, remove the shortcut rather than assuming it works.

Install an Edge extension that hides the panel
Many Chromium-compatible extensions can run in Edge. A suitable extension can either remove the rendered AI Overview element or redirect searches to another result view. Both approaches hide or bypass what you see; they do not necessarily stop Google from generating or sending the overview.
- In Edge, select Settings and more (…).
- Select Extensions, then Get extensions for Microsoft Edge.
- Search for an extension that specifically describes hiding or removing Google AI Overviews.
- Before installing, check the developer identity, requested permissions, privacy policy, update history, reviews, and support for the current Google layout.
- Select Get and approve only the permissions you understand.
- Run several Google searches and compare the page with the extension enabled and disabled.
- Use the Extensions menu to pin it if desired.
Microsoft notes that extensions may request access to browsing data and recommends evaluating their credibility and privacy practices: Edge privacy information. An extension that can read or modify Google Search pages may see your searches, depending on its permissions.

Using an extension from the Chrome Web Store
If a compatible extension is not listed in Microsoft’s Add-ons store, Edge may allow installation from another store after you enable Allow extensions from other stores. Many Chromium extensions may work, but compatibility is not guaranteed. Installation from another store adds a separate trust, privacy, and update-management consideration. Google can also change its markup, causing an otherwise legitimate extension to stop working.
What Edge settings do not disable Google AI Overviews

Troubleshoot an extension that is not hiding the overview
- Refresh the Google results page.
- Open
edge://extensionsand confirm the extension is enabled. - Open its details and verify that it is allowed to run on
google.com. - Install any available extension update.
- Temporarily disable other extensions to check for a conflict.
- If it works in normal browsing but not InPrivate, open the extension’s details and allow it in InPrivate only if you trust it.
- Test several queries. An overview missing on one query does not prove the extension removed it.
- Remove the extension if it requests excessive permissions or behaves unexpectedly.
- Use Google’s Web filter as the fallback.
Edge provides site-level extension controls, and turning site access off prevents an extension from operating there: Microsoft’s extension-management documentation. Work or school policies may block installation or restrict which extensions can run.

If the Web filter is missing
Open More in the filter row and look for Web. If it is still unavailable, Google may be testing a different layout or applying account, regional, language, device, or query-specific rules. There is no Edge setting that can force the filter to appear.
If Google changes its page layout
Element-removal extensions depend on Google’s HTML and CSS structure. A layout change can make the extension ineffective or cause it to hide legitimate content. Update the extension, review its release notes, and revert to Web if the behavior is unsafe or inconsistent. Users of screen readers and other accessibility tools should verify that hiding the panel does not disrupt reading order or remove needed context.
Choose the method that fits your situation

Bottom line
You cannot permanently disable Google AI Overviews through a native Microsoft Edge setting. Use Web for the official per-search bypass, or install a carefully vetted Edge-compatible extension if you want automatic local hiding. Disabling Edge Copilot, changing privacy controls, turning off Search Labs, or adding -AI to searches is not a dependable solution.
