The catalog exposes individual controls, but a setting appearing in Intune does not mean it works on every iPhone, iPad, Mac, or enrollment type. Apple’s documented operating-system version, hardware, supervision, and enrollment requirements still apply.
The exact set of controls newly surfaced by Microsoft should be confirmed in the current tenant and the relevant Intune release notes. Apple remains the authority for payload keys, defaults, supported platforms, and deprecations.
What changed in Intune
Additional Apple restriction controls are being exposed or made searchable in Intune’s Settings Catalog. This is an administrative-catalog change, not a new section in Apple’s consumer Settings app. Apple defines the MDM payload schema; Intune presents supported keys as configurable policy settings.
Because Microsoft’s catalog is updated over time and the exact release-note entry is not established here, do not treat an article or screenshot as a permanent list of “new” settings. Open the catalog in your tenant, select the target Apple platform, and compare the available labels with Apple’s Restrictions payload documentation.

How Boolean restrictions work
Most keys use an allow... Boolean. In general, true permits the feature and false blocks it. In Intune, however, the safest choice may be Not configured when you do not want the policy to manage that behavior. Read the setting description rather than assuming that an “Allow” label means you should select it to enforce a block.
Defaults can differ by platform. Some restrictions are ignored unless the device has a passcode, and Lockdown Mode can override or cause a device to ignore certain values. A restriction can disable a system function without removing the associated app.

Configure a setting in Intune
Intune navigation changes, so verify the labels in your tenant. The current workflow generally follows these steps:
- Open the Microsoft Intune admin center.
- Open Devices, then the area labelled Configuration or Configuration policies.
- Create a policy or edit an existing Apple policy.
- Select the applicable Apple platform and choose Settings catalog as the profile type.
- Select Add settings. Search by the friendly label and, when possible, the Apple payload-key name.
- Configure one or two restrictions, save the policy, and assign it to a small pilot group.
- Review policy-level and per-setting status, then confirm the behavior on a physical enrolled device.
If a key is absent, the catalog may filter it by platform, Microsoft may not have exposed it in your tenant, or the control may belong to another payload category, a template, or a custom profile.

Supervision and enrollment prerequisites
Supervision is decisive for many iPhone and iPad restrictions. Automated Device Enrollment is normally the preferred route for organization-owned devices that need supervision. User Enrollment provides privacy protections and deliberately less administrative control; it does not support every restriction. Device Enrollment and User Enrollment are therefore not interchangeable.
- Confirm the device’s platform, model, OS version, and supervision state.
- Record whether it uses Automated Device Enrollment, Device Enrollment, or User Enrollment.
- Check Apple’s minimum OS and supervision requirement for the exact payload key.
- Allow for the device’s next MDM check-in and verify that the policy targets the correct channel.
Apple notes that not every restriction is available through every device-management service and that services can alter effective defaults. A setting can appear in Intune yet be ineffective on an unsupervised device, an old OS, an unsupported enrollment type, or incompatible hardware.

Settings Catalog versus the Device restrictions template
| Approach | Strengths | Risks |
|---|---|---|
| Settings Catalog | Granular access to individual Apple keys; easier to combine controls from different payload areas; often exposes newer keys sooner. | More overlapping-policy risk; labels can hide Apple behavior; visible settings may still be unsupported on a target device. |
| Device restrictions template | Guided, familiar layout for common restrictions and baseline policies. | New Apple controls may arrive later; abstraction can hide OS and supervision requirements. |
Choose one authoritative policy for each payload key. Retire or remove duplicate assignments after testing, and maintain a policy-ownership matrix covering legacy templates, Settings Catalog profiles, custom configuration profiles, and declarative configurations.
Traditional profiles and Declarative Device Management
Apple is moving some functionality from traditional configuration-profile restrictions to Declarative Device Management. Apple marks several intelligence, keyboard, and application-related profile keys for deprecation in favor of configurations such as com.apple.configuration.intelligence.settings, com.apple.configuration.keyboard.settings, and com.apple.configuration.app.settings.
Deprecation does not necessarily mean immediate removal. It means administrators should check Apple’s current replacement guidance before building a long-lived policy around a profile key. A catalog control may be useful for compatibility today while a declarative replacement becomes the preferred path.
A safe pilot and validation process
- Inventory the target: record platform, model, OS version, supervision, enrollment type, user affinity, and shared-device status.
- Verify Apple support: record the exact payload key, minimum OS, default, supervision requirement, and deprecation notice.
- Create a narrow pilot: configure only one or two restrictions and avoid unrelated compliance or security changes.
- Assign selectively: use organization-owned test devices and include at least one device on the oldest supported OS.
- Check reporting: review policy status, per-setting status, last check-in, and any MDM or CSP error details.
- Test the user experience: confirm whether the control is blocked, hidden, disabled, or simply ignored, and verify unrelated workflows.
- Test removal: set the value to Not configured or remove the assignment, then wait for check-in and confirm the restriction is gone.
- Document rollback: retain the previous policy until the replacement is proven and remove conflicting assignments rather than repeatedly toggling values.
When deployment makes sense
Good reasons to deploy
- A defined security, privacy, or support requirement exists.
- The target fleet meets Apple’s OS and supervision requirements.
- The restriction solves a problem not already handled elsewhere.
- The organization can test effects on accessibility, managed apps, and field workflows.
Reasons to delay
- The setting is being adopted merely because it is new.
- The business requirement is vague or the affected population is unknown.
- The control could disrupt assistive technology, support tools, or BYOD users.
- A supported declarative replacement already exists for a deprecated profile key.
- An existing profile already enforces a conflicting value.
Troubleshooting common failures
The setting appears but has no effect
- The device is unsupervised, below the minimum OS, or enrolled through an unsupported channel.
- The policy targets the wrong Apple platform or has not reached the device.
- Another profile, custom OMA-URI, or declarative configuration sets a conflicting value.
- The key is deprecated, ignored on that OS, or configured as
truewhen blocking requiresfalse.
The setting is missing from Intune
Search both the friendly label and payload-key name, select the correct platform, and compare the result with Apple’s documentation. Microsoft may not yet have exposed the key in your tenant, or the feature may be available only through a template or custom profile.
The interface remains visible
A restriction does not always remove an app or hide its control. Apple may leave the interface visible but make it unavailable. Validate the documented and observed behavior on the target OS rather than treating a visible control as proof of failure.
