Windows 11’s Settings > Apps area is a collection of management pages, not a single control panel. From here you can remove supported programs, repair or reset apps, choose file associations, manage startup behavior, install Windows Features on Demand, configure offline maps, and control website-to-app links. Page names and locations can vary with your Windows build, edition, updates, and organizational policy.

The main route is Start > Settings > Apps. For a current overview of Windows Settings categories, see Microsoft’s Windows Settings guide.

Open Apps settings quickly

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Apps.

You can also press Windows + I, search for Settings from Start, or launch a page directly with an ms-settings: URI from Run, Windows Terminal, or a supported browser address bar.

Page Direct URI
Installed apps ms-settings:appsfeatures
Default apps ms-settings:defaultapps
Optional features ms-settings:optionalfeatures
Offline Maps ms-settings:maps
Download maps ms-settings:maps-downloadmaps
Apps for websites ms-settings:appsforwebsites
Video playback ms-settings:videoplayback
Startup apps ms-settings:startupapps

Microsoft maintains the URI list in its Settings launch documentation.

Manage Installed apps

Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Search the list, then use the three-dot menu beside an application. Depending on how that application was packaged and installed, you may see Uninstall, Modify, Move, or Advanced options.

Uninstall an application

  1. Open Installed apps and search for the program.
  2. Select its three-dot menu.
  3. Choose Uninstall.
  4. Complete the program’s removal wizard if one appears.

Microsoft Store and other packaged apps often expose more controls in Settings. Traditional Win32 software may open its own installer, use Control Panel, or provide only a Modify or Uninstall command. Protected Windows components and some enterprise-deployed software cannot be removed by a standard user.

Move an app

Some supported apps can be moved to another drive from the three-dot menu. The option is app- and installation-dependent; it is not available for every desktop program.

Use Advanced options to troubleshoot an app

Choose Installed apps > app menu > Advanced options when the entry exists. The page can include version or package information, background-permission controls, Terminate, Repair, Reset, uninstall, and app add-ons.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Terminate

Terminate forcibly closes a supported app and related activity when normal closing fails. It is a troubleshooting action, and unsaved work can be lost.

Repair before Reset

  1. Save your work and close the app.
  2. Select Repair, if available.
  3. Open the app and test it.
  4. If the problem remains, consider Reset.
  5. Reinstall the app if reset does not help.

Repair is intended to correct the installation with less disruption. Reset can remove local app data, settings, cached information, and sign-in state, so confirm that important data is synchronized or backed up and that you know the account credentials. Availability and behavior vary by application. See Microsoft’s guidance on repairing apps and programs.

Understand Advanced app settings

Open Settings > Apps > Advanced app settings. The labels and available choices can differ by edition, policy, and update level.

Choose where to get apps

This preference can recommend or restrict installation sources, such as Microsoft Store-only or non-Store sources. It is an installation-source policy, not a complete malware-prevention system. Windows Security, application allowlisting, and enterprise controls may still be required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Share across devices

Where supported by the account, service, and application, this enables cross-device app experiences. It does not guarantee that every app or setting synchronizes.

Archive apps

For supported Store-managed apps, archiving can reduce local storage and bandwidth use for infrequently used software. Windows may need to download the app again before it can be used.

App execution aliases

Aliases expose app-linked command names to Command Prompt or Windows Terminal. Turn an alias on or off when a command such as python launches the wrong app or shows a Store prompt. An alias is not necessarily a traditional executable on the system PATH, and it can conflict with another alias or a real executable.

Choose Default apps

Go to Settings > Apps > Default apps. Windows 11 commonly lets you assign an application by file extension, link protocol, or supported app. For example, you can choose a browser for web links or a media player for a particular video extension.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Search for an application or file type, select the current association, and choose the replacement. Windows may present associations individually rather than offering one switch for every possible type. An app can also register only the file and link types it supports. Microsoft documents the page and its launch options in Default Apps settings.

Use Offline Maps

Settings > Apps > Offline Maps lets you download map data for use without an internet connection and manage map storage and updates. Coverage, update behavior, storage requirements, and availability vary by region and service support.

Use ms-settings:maps for the main page or ms-settings:maps-downloadmaps to open map downloads directly. Some Windows layouts may expose the feature in a different location.

Add or remove Optional features

Optional features, also called Features on Demand, are Windows components that can be installed after the base operating-system setup. Examples include language resources, handwriting support, administrative tools, and compatibility components; the current inventory depends on the Windows release and edition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On many current releases the page is Settings > System > Optional features. Some installations still show Settings > Apps > Optional features. Use ms-settings:optionalfeatures if navigation differs.

Add a feature

  1. Open Optional features.
  2. Select View features or Add a feature.
  3. Select the component, choose Next, then Add.

Remove a feature

  1. Find it under Installed features.
  2. Open its menu.
  3. Select Uninstall or Remove, when offered.

Downloads may require internet access and administrator rights. Group Policy or mobile-device management can hide or restrict the page, so an unavailable control may be intentional. Microsoft’s Features on Demand documentation covers these administrative controls.

Configure Apps for websites

Settings > Apps > Apps for websites controls supported website domains that can open in an installed application instead of a browser. This is narrower than Default apps: it depends on an app registering specific website associations. Use ms-settings:appsforwebsites to open the page.

Adjust Video playback

Settings > Apps > Video playback can expose video-processing, HDR-streaming, and battery-related preferences. Results depend on the display, GPU, codec, application, power mode, battery state, and HDR support; changing a setting cannot guarantee better quality or longer battery life.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Control Startup apps

Open Settings > Apps > Startup and turn off programs that do not need to launch when you sign in. Sign out or restart before judging the effect. Startup entries can increase boot-time activity, but do not disable security software, backup agents, accessibility tools, hardware utilities, cloud synchronization, or corporate-management agents without checking their purpose.

You can also use Task Manager: press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select Startup apps, right-click an entry, and choose Disable. The direct URI is ms-settings:startupapps. Microsoft’s performance guidance is available at Tips to improve PC performance in Windows.

Why is Repair unavailable for my program?

Repair is offered only when the app package or installer supports it. Traditional Win32 software may require its own installer or Control Panel.

Does Reset delete my documents?

Reset can remove local app data and settings, but behavior is application-specific. Back up important data and confirm synchronization before using it.

Can every Windows app be uninstalled?

No. Protected system components, some built-in apps, and enterprise-managed programs may not expose an uninstall command.

Are ms-settings commands safe?

They are Windows Settings URI shortcuts that open the corresponding page. The changes you make after the page opens still require normal care and permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does uninstalling remove personal app data?

Not necessarily. Profiles, caches, documents, saved games, and other data can remain after the program itself is removed.
