Jan Koum, WhatsApp’s co-founder, leads this provisional 2026 ranking with an estimated net worth of $16.9 billion. Daniel Ek, Brian Chesky, Martin Lorentzon and Nathan Blecharczyk follow, with fortunes built through Spotify and Airbnb. The list covers founders whose wealth was substantially created by a consumer app or an app-centered platform—not every billionaire who owns a technology company with an app.
Figures are estimates rather than audited statements. Most Forbes figures were current on July 27 or 28, 2026; Bloomberg’s estimates for Lorentzon, Chesky and Blecharczyk were dated May 7, May 6 and February 8, respectively. Because several fortunes depend on public share prices and one depends on a private-company valuation, close positions can change.
How this ranking defines an app creator
An app creator here is a founder or co-founder whose personal fortune was materially generated by a consumer-facing app or an app-centered digital platform. That includes direct mobile products such as WhatsApp, Instagram and Snapchat, as well as marketplaces and services whose consumer businesses operate heavily through apps, including Airbnb, Spotify and Canva.
Founders are ranked individually, not as combined teams. The list excludes early employees, later acquirers, owners whose wealth came mainly from another company, and developers of popular apps whose ownership or proceeds are not documented. Mark Zuckerberg, for example, built Facebook as a web platform before it became an app ecosystem; including him would change this into a general social-media billionaire list.

Ranking and methodology
Forbes describes its numbers as real-time estimates that move with markets. Bloomberg’s index values public-company stakes using recent closing prices, converts them to U.S. dollars at current exchange rates, and estimates private-company interests and other assets. A public-company stake can therefore change value daily, while a private-company estimate may remain unchanged until a funding round or other transaction provides a new reference point.

This is a defensible, date-stamped ranking rather than a definitive worldwide register. The estimates are not synchronized, and candidates such as Joe Gebbia, founders of large Chinese apps, or founders of Uber, Tinder and Telegram could change the order under different inclusion rules or with better-disclosed ownership data.
The 10 richest app and app-centered platform creators
1. Jan Koum — WhatsApp — $16.9 billion
Koum co-founded WhatsApp with Brian Acton. Meta (then Facebook) acquired the messaging company in 2014 for $22 billion in cash and stock; that was the company’s transaction value, not Koum’s personal payout. Bloomberg reported that Koum owned approximately 43% of WhatsApp at the sale and received more than $2 billion in cash plus Meta shares. Forbes estimated his real-time net worth at $16.9 billion on July 27, 2026. His fortune reflects sale proceeds, retained investments and the value of assets accumulated after the exit. 2. Daniel Ek — Spotify — $12.5 billion
Ek co-founded Spotify with Martin Lorentzon in Sweden in 2006; the music-streaming service launched in 2008. Forbes estimated Ek’s wealth at $12.5 billion on July 28, 2026. Most of the fortune is tied to his Spotify ownership, so the value is especially sensitive to the company’s publicly traded share price. Spotify’s market capitalization is not the same as Ek’s wealth: only his personal stake, together with other assets and liabilities included by the estimator, counts toward his net worth. Chesky co-founded Airbnb with Joe Gebbia and Nathan Blecharczyk. The lodging marketplace was founded in 2008 and went public in 2020. Forbes estimated Chesky’s net worth at $10.3 billion on July 28, 2026. Bloomberg estimated $10.1 billion on May 6, 2026 and reported approximately 67 million Airbnb shares based on a June 2025 filing. His fortune therefore moves with Airbnb’s stock rather than representing cash held in a bank. Sources: Forbes and Bloomberg.
4. Martin Lorentzon — Spotify — $9.07 billion
Lorentzon co-founded Spotify with Ek. Bloomberg’s May 7, 2026 estimate put his net worth at $9.07 billion. Bloomberg reported that he owned about 9% of Spotify’s ordinary shares through Rosello and held additional beneficiary certificates carrying voting rights but no economic value. This distinction illustrates why control and wealth are related but not identical: voting power can be substantial without adding directly to the owner’s financial stake. Source: Bloomberg.

5. Nathan Blecharczyk — Airbnb — $8.39 billion
Blecharczyk was Airbnb’s technical co-founder alongside Chesky and Gebbia. Bloomberg estimated his net worth at $8.39 billion on February 8, 2026, primarily from Airbnb ownership. His position shows why a complete ranking cannot focus only on the best-known chief executive: technical and less publicly visible co-founders may retain a very large equity stake. Source: Bloomberg.
6. Melanie Perkins — Canva — $7.6 billion
Perkins co-founded Canva in Sydney with Cliff Obrecht and Cameron Adams in 2013. The collaborative design platform uses a freemium model and was valued by private investors at $42 billion in August 2025. Forbes estimated Perkins’s net worth at $7.6 billion on July 28, 2026 and reported that she and Obrecht each owned an estimated 18% stake while pledging more than 80% of their stake to the Canva Foundation. A private valuation is a paper benchmark, not a promise that a founder can sell the entire holding for that amount immediately. Source: Forbes.

8. Kevin Systrom — Instagram — $2.3 billion
Systrom co-founded Instagram with Mike Krieger in 2010. Facebook bought Instagram in 2012 for $1 billion in cash and stock; that figure describes the acquisition, not Systrom’s individual proceeds. Forbes reported that Systrom owned approximately 40% before the sale and estimated his net worth at $2.3 billion on July 28, 2026. The stake size helps explain why a relatively small acquisition by today’s mega-deal standards created a multibillion-dollar fortune. Source: Forbes.
9. Evan Spiegel — Snapchat — $2.1 billion
Spiegel co-founded Snap with Bobby Murphy in 2011. Snap went public in 2017, giving investors a continuously traded reference price but also making founder wealth volatile. Forbes estimated Spiegel’s net worth at $2.1 billion on July 27, 2026. Spiegel and Murphy jointly own just over 20% of Snap and retain special voting control, according to Forbes. Source: Forbes.
10. Bobby Murphy — Snapchat — $1.5 billion
Murphy is Snap’s technical co-founder and chief technology officer. Forbes estimated his net worth at $1.5 billion on July 28, 2026. His wealth is primarily linked to Snap stock and the founders’ voting structure shared with Spiegel. The difference between Murphy’s and Spiegel’s estimates reflects individual holdings and transactions, even though both helped create the same product. Source: Forbes.

Why co-founders of the same app can have very different fortunes
- Equity ownership: founders may hold different percentages at launch, fundraising, acquisition or listing.
- Timing of sales: one founder may sell shares earlier, while another keeps exposure to later price increases or declines.
- Voting versus economic rights: special voting shares can preserve control without adding equivalent financial value.
- Compensation and later investments: salaries, option exercises and investments outside the app affect the final estimate.
- Philanthropy, taxes and liabilities: transfers and obligations reduce personal wealth even when the original business succeeds.
Acquisition proceeds are not the same as net worth
WhatsApp’s $22 billion sale and Instagram’s $1 billion sale were prices paid for entire companies. Founders owned only portions of those companies, and proceeds could include cash, acquirer shares, taxes, lockups and later gains or losses. The same principle applies to public companies: a founder’s reported wealth is the estimated value of a personal stake, not the company’s total market value or annual income.
Public stocks and private valuations create different kinds of uncertainty
Spotify, Airbnb and Snap provide daily market prices, so their founders’ estimated fortunes can move materially between the dates shown above. Canva is private: its $42 billion August 2025 valuation came from private investors, and there is no continuously traded price. Private-market marks can overstate or understate what a holder could realize in an immediate sale, particularly for a large block.
Why famous names and popular apps may be missing
Download counts do not establish personal wealth. A creator may have sold early, retained little equity, built the app inside a larger company, or lack a reliable public wealth estimate. Uber founders, Tinder founders, TikTok-related entrepreneurs, Telegram’s founders, Joe Gebbia and founders of major Chinese apps require separate verification of ownership, business classification and current valuation before they can be inserted responsibly. Owners such as Jeff Bezos, Larry Page or Sergey Brin are excluded because their fortunes were created primarily outside a single consumer app.
The Bottom Line
On the available Forbes and Bloomberg estimates, Jan Koum is the richest qualifying app creator in this provisional July 2026 ranking. The order is best read as a dated snapshot: public share prices, private valuations, ownership disclosures and philanthropic transfers can change it.
